Schweitzer went through his first day routine and noted the last item on the list, the check-in with the counselor. Schweitzer had always had a positive and professional relationship with counselors at the Academy, so he was less concerned with this task than with checking in with the Commander.

He stepped to the door and knocked. “Lt. Schweitzer reporting for his counseling check-in, Sir.”

“You realize how hard it is to practice medicine after not doing so for five years?” Lieutenant Michaels asked as he stepped out from his closet. The Counselor waved his had to put a pause to his question and motioned for the junior Lieutenant to take a seat in front of his desk. “Lieutenant Schweitzer I presume?” Trevor asked as he sat in the chair behind his desk.

“Tell me, how was your time on the Challenger?” Michaels asked.

Schweitzer smiled as he had anticipated the question. “Never reported in, Sir. I was offered this position as I was on my way there from the Academy and I took it because it was an opportunity to lead a department.”

“In this office I’m not a sir, so you can call me Trevor, Counselor, or Michaels.” The Lieutenant said as he opened the new CMO’s file. “Though everywhere else it’s Lieutenant or sir.” Trevor laughed.

“So a Department Head right out of the Academy, eh?” Michaels asked rhetorically. “That must make you nervous. Usually it takes 3 to 4 years for anyone to become head of a department on a ship this size.”

Schweitzer swallowed and tried not to show any nervousness. “Yes. I know I’m somewhat ahead of the curve. That’s why I jumped at this assignment. I think I am ready for the challenge, Counselor.”
