The captain’s ready room was mostly the way Sidney left it, with two visible exceptions. A small potted plant was near the entrance. A small portable standup picture frame was visible on the desk. Two things that could be picked up and carried out when Sidney resumed command of the Olinski.

In the meantime Jason was the acting commanding officer, and that duty sometimes meant setting personal feelings aside and asking the difficult questions.

Jason turned when he was about a meter from the desk and faced Kolar. “You know, there’s really no easy way to ask this. Based off the data we have so far do we think that the away team or the passengers we rescued brought aboard something contagious?”

Jason Harn, aCO thinking he’s being direct when in actuality he’s still pussyfooting around

“Logic doesn’t resolve the issue cleanly. Infection of any sort is linear or exponential, but in any case it is positive. Meaning the crew of the transport should have been infected first by a natural contagion. Since there is no infection on the transport the passengers can not be a source of contagion. Conversely, the passengers of the transport is the only new factor on the ship, so logic suggests they are the cause. Looking at that, it is not a random infection but an intentional attack if… if the passengers are the cause.”

Kolar paused, “But there is one other factor, only the landing party… was on the surface of the planet. Therefore if there is a contagion on the planet we could be the causal factor… but even then, the Sierra should still have had illnesses prior to our.. if only by hours.”

“Have any of the landing party come down with symptoms?” Jason asked, eager to avoid the question that he had brought Kolar into the privacy of the ready room to ask. “Or any of the pilots?”

Kolar tilted his head. “Not at this time. Which also contradicts the possibility that we ‘caught’ it from the freighter.” Kolar actually used his fingers to make air quotes. The gesture seemed so out of place as to be laughable. “Highly unlikely. It still could be an intentional attack, evading the primary carrier so that it could progress unnoticed.” None of this discussion seemed to require the privacy of the Ready Room.

“It sounds like something to discuss with Doolittle,” Jason decided, “and we can’t ignore the possibility that someone who went down there brought something up that doesn’t show.” He stopped and frowned in thought. “That doesn’t show,” he murmured softly. He then spoke louder, in a more decisive tone. “Maybe you’re right, and none of the away team is carrying something, but all the same everyone who went down there should probably check in with Doolittle and see if he wants to examine them. Let’s get back to the bridge.”
