Bennie was administering an anti-histamine to a patient who had come in with an allergic reaction to her new perfume, when a tall, attractive man in the teal of medical/science walked in through the doors.

“Alright,” she said to the women on the biobed. “I want you to stay here for 15 minutes to make sure the medicine takes effect. Get comfortable and I’ll check back in a couple of minutes.” The patient nodded.

The CMO turned to the newcomer who was looking at all the people working there. “Hi, may I help you?”

She saw his eyes dart to her collar and the pips fastened there. “Lt Royce?” Bennie nodded. “Hello, I am Lt(jg) Clint Beaujay, newly assigned to the USS Olinski. I believe you are my new boss.” His smile was dazzling and the French accent wasn’t bad either.

“Really? I wasn’t aware we were getting someone new today. Follow me to my office and we’ll get sorted out. Okay?” As they walked across the bay, Bennie looked at one of the medics on duty and motioned over her shoulder to the patient she’d given the anti-histamine to. They were going to take over for her there.

The Captain showed up for his yearly physical. He usually did not avoid these like the psych one he avoided. After all he was in good physical shape and exercised normally.

“Dr. Royce I am here for my physical.” He said as he found and then approached the CMO.

Parker CO

Bennie paused at the sound of Sidney’s voice, then shooed Beaujay into her office to wait while she saw the Captain. With some surprise in her smile, she then turned to Parker. “Welcome to Sickbay, Sir. If you’ll have a seat on one of the beds, I’ll take care of that for you.”

“By all means Dr.” The Captain said and did so.

“Dr. I know I have not had the time for us to talk That’s an oversight on my part. I believe the CMO is a key part of the leadership team and I want to express that to you.”

Parker CO

Better late than never, Bennie thought. She raised her tricorder and began scanning. “Thank you, Captain. I realize your job is very demanding and time consuming though. I’m sure if Sickbay had had a problem that required your attention, we would have seen or heard from you at that time. Lucky for us things have been running like clockwork.” She smiled at the CO to take any sting out of her words.

“So, tell me, have you been in good health since your last physical?”

“Yes Dr I have. The wonders of medical science. Tell me Dr how is the crew doing? Yourself and the CNS tend to have a good vibe on the crew. Well CMO’s in general if not yourself, though I hope that you do.” The Captain asked.

The Captain was famous for turning even a routine encounter into a friendly interrogation.

Parker CO

OOC: Does anything come up on the tricorder?

IC:
“The crew are in good health, Sir, and from what I have observed, the majority of them seem to be in good spirits too. Every ship has a few exceptions, of course, but the Olinski as a whole unit would definitely get a ‘pass’ from me.” She looked away from the Captain to read the results of the scans.

Nothing other than his pressure was only slightly elevated and his body mass index was up 1%. Probably from the stress of the job and lack of time to exercise.

Parker CO

Satisfied with the readings, Bennie looked back at Parker and smiled. “Did you have a particular reason for asking about the crew, Captain? Is something on your mind?” Often times officers chose to reveal something to the CMO instead of the CNS. It was a sideways path to get something off their chest and only have brief questions asked. Besides, the CMO didn’t usually write those things down in a file.

Although their was a new officer waiting for her in her office, this was the first time Bennie had a chance to speak one on one with the CO, so she was in no hurry to end the physical.

“I find the CMO sometimes knows more than the CO and sometimes the CNS. The things people reveal when you have them half naked on a biobed alwasy astound me Dr.” The Captain answered. “Anyone sowing signs of PTSD etc…from the last mission?”

Parker CO

Now the visit made more sense. “Without mentioning any names that would breach my confidentiality agreement, I can tell you there are a few officers, 3 or 4, who have been having trouble sleeping. They exhibit several signs of PTSD so I have conferred with Lt Michaels about their treatments. He is handling their mental health and I’m doing what I can to make sure their anxiety levels and sleep patterns stay as normal as possible.” Bennie set the tricorder on the bed behind her and leaned against it.

“Honestly, I thought we were going to have more cases than just the four. I hadn’t been with this crew long enough to realize just how seasoned they actually were, but I’m quite impressed with the dedication and loyalty they feel towards you and Cmdr Harn.”

“Were a combat oriented ship. We get the mission other ships avoid if they can. The spearhead so to speak. They are a great crew. I just want to be sure we take care of them from every angle.” He answered her.

” Tell me Dr. how has your transition going to the Olinski?” The Captain was alarmingly good at sterring conversation away from himself and as being the Captain he had a built in advantage.
