Jason entered the security section and walked over the desk where a young man with a dark pageboy haircut, pronounced bangs, down swept eyebrows and pointed ears was sitting. “Smock, I’m afraid that Lieutenant Ch’zaolrirh won’t be coming into work today. He’s resigned his commission and bought that goat farm on Daran V that he always talked about. You’ll be reporting to Lieutenant Turcio until Starfleet sends us a replacement. I know you two were close. He didn’t have the heart to tell you in person, so he left you this letter,” he announced as he handed the young Vulcan a PADD.The COS walked in quietly behind Jason. He put a finger to his lips as if to tell Smock to go along with the XO’s antics.
When Ensign Smock didn’t respond, he spoke in a softer voice. “Come on, Smok. I know you’ll miss him, but everyone deserves the chance to follow their dream. You understand right?”
“Yes Commander, I understand,” Ensign Smock replied in a terse clipped staccato voice. “Everyone should have a chance to follow their dream. That goat farm on Daran V was his. I understand. But the people on this starship, and the citizens of the United Federation of Planets who expected him to be on duty, will they understand?”
The COS couldn’t bear to the joke continue, “A goat farm? Really Sir?”
As he waited for Jason’s response, he wondered what really brought the XO down to Security.
OOC: Feel free to turn this into an actual thread. What a lousy way to do me in!

“April Fool!” Jason shouted like an idiot.
“Mm-hm. Sir, with all due respect, it is not April,” the young Vulcan countered.
“It’s not?” Jason asked. “Darn it, I’ve never really gotten used to using stardates!”
“Is that another joke sir?” Smock asked.
“Er um, yes,” Jason stammered once he realized that his careless comment sounded strange to 24th century ears. There were no doubt some children who grew up using stardates that were unfamiliar with the calendars of their own planets. “I know it sounds lame but um… I guess that kind of humor doesn’t… um…”
“It’s all right sir,” Ensign Smock assured him in a serious tone. “It was hilarious.”
“Um… so… the_USS Dragoon_has disappeared…” Jason said uncomfortably as he changed the subject. “I’m expecting this to be a “something caused the ship to explode” kind of thing but what do we do in case it isn’t? In case this is one of those “an army of intruders managed to beam aboard” or “a strange gravity field made everyone go insane” kind of thing? Do we have any contingency plans for anything like that?” he asked as he looked from the Andorian to the Vulcan and back again.
OOC: I had considered the old “transferred to another starship” excuse, but then I saw the old 1987 Dan Ackroyd “Dragnet” movie…
Jason Harn, XO
OOC: I thought it was hilarious!!
The COS nodded as he thought for a moment. “Interesting thought commander. The captain has us preparing anti-boarding measures, but you are right, that we may need to be the ones doing the boarding. In our last mission, I had prepared gas, non-lethal of course, to neutralize the pirates aboard that Klingon ship.” The COS turned as a few security officers walked past with phaser rifles slung over their shoulders. “I suppose that is still an option… if Doctor Royce approves.”
