James was eating shepherds pie in the mess hall. He was reading the past few week’s security reports. Most of them where still open and not closed. He was going to retrain some of them but the closed reports look the most part handled properly. He put the padd down and took a big bite of a shepherds pie.

“Not my grandmas but it will do” he said almost to himself

“Sup! My name is Steve and I am new here.” The tall, black haired man said wearing an engineers uniform. “Mind if I sit with you and make a new friend?” He was positively beaming with his smile.

James looked at him with a raised eyebrow “only if you stop with the fake smile” he said with a smirk of his own. “Sit and have a meal with me”

Steve sat down and was still smiling. “Oh. This smile is not fake. The Goddesses that I worship command us to make friends. They say that Friendship is Magic! The purple one, Twilight Sparkle, is the Princess of Friendship! The others, Princess Celestia, raises and lowers the Sun. Princess Luna raises and lowers the Moon and Princess Cadence is the Princess of Love.” He was very jovial, loud and still smiling! “Which one do you like best? Which one is best princess?”

James raised eyebrow, and said “ I have to admit, I’m not too familiar with your culture, but for my culture, there is a story that I’ve always enjoyed about the three goddesses of time Urd the Goddess of the past, Belldandy goddess of the present, and Skuld goddess of the future. before time was even made existence flowed out in every direction because of the chaos and multiple timelines that were made destroyed and remade. The goddesses made the first hourglass. That may time flow in one direction. The three goddesses protected the hourglass and the existence of time that is why the hourglass is shaped the way it is. Urd time that was used, Belldandy collects the sand of now with the present, and of course Skuld gathers the sand for the future” he said ending his story. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small minute hourglass, and puts it onto a table with the sand already falling.

Steve quirked an eyebrow. “Well I was just being silly. I am Steve Johnson, the Chief Engineer. I am pleased to meet you.” He put out his hand to shake. and he wondered how this guy can just produce stuff from no where and glass at that. These uniforms are tight and that hourglass would show. He wondered if this guy was from a cartoon world where they could just manifest items from no where.

James had a some bag attached to his belt it allowed him to carry extra things like some personal things. James took the hour glass and slipped it back into his bag. Then he took the lieutenants hand “ nice to meet you Steve how are things in engineering going” he asked

“Pleased to meet you as well. Engineering is going well but I am still too new to tell if something is actually broken or not!” Laughing. “Just kidding. I did a full check on everything major and all systems personally to make sure that they worked and to fins out where they were. Pretty big ship but I’ll get used to her. How are things with you?”

“Everything is fine but the chair in my office I can’t get it just right” he joked “ I was wondering if you could install two more monitors on the walls” he asked

Lt. James Hawkins (COS)

“Sure. What kind and how big? After that than I can actually do that this afternoon around…” He checks his PaDD…”1700hrs. Is that good for you?

“That would be perfect” he said “ I would like more monitors in the security office to display more of the ship status.” James was enjoying the talk with the CE as they both were new to the ship.

Steve raised an eyebrow. “Ship status? What do you mean by that? We have to program the monitors, so what exactly do you need them for? You don’t need to know if the warp core is running ok? “

James looked at him “ I was thinking more of a tactical status. Like shield strength,phaser banks, intruder alerts and basic calls for security.” He said to hopefully clearing up the misunderstanding.

“Oh!” He laughed. “Sorry mate. Still new to this job. I see. Of course we can do that. I and my team will bring all of the chips for you to look at and then you pick the ones you want installed. Sound good? Plus we will have to create a separate panel for the security alarm panel if there is not one there already or add to the existing one. But we will cross that bridge when I look at it. So where were you at before here?” He took a bite of his cheeseburger and sip from his RC Cola.

James looked up from his food “Star Base 1987” he said as he took a sip from his tea “older base but still in good condition I heard they are about to retire the base for one of them new ones there making” he said.
