The Captain went to the Bridge and then to his Ready Room. He started timing the new COS the minute he got off the lift. Six minutes he thought. Well lets see if the man keeps his word.

Parker CO

After 5 minutes and 59 seconds later his door chimes sounded. Lt.Hawkins was in a fresh uniform and clean shaven. He waited for the ok to enter from the captain.

Lt. James Hawkins (COS)

“Enter!” Came the reply as the door swooshed open.

Hawkins would find the Captain behind his sleek desk waiting for the new COS to approach.

Parker CO

He quickly answered and stood at attention in front of the captains desk and salute it

“Lt. Hawkins Reporting for duty sir”

After to salute, he stayed at attention

Lt. James Hawkins (COS)

“At Ease Lt and have a seat.” The Captain said. Now he was giving a slightly more relaxed vibe as if to say ok now that you get it we can talk.

James did as he was told and took a seat in the chair. In his belt you saw on old security badge for an vessel called UNG: PathFinder.

(This vessel went missing 15 years ago. In Hawkins file his mother was on that vessel. She was a security officer on it. Star fleet and UNG did a long search for the vessel but was never found. So they classified as lost with all hands.)

“Lt. what is that on your belt?” The Captain asked seeing the badge but not recognizing it.

Parker CO

James pulled the badge off of his belt and placed it on the captains desk. “This is my moms old security badge from the UNG: PathFinder I have kept it as a charm like my mother is with me” James than shook his head “ sorry sir if it is against uniform, I will not have it on next time”

Lt. James Hawkins (COS)

“Pathfinder. Fine ship. Fine crew. You may keep it as part as an approved uniform deviation.”

“Tell me Lt a little about the man who is going to take my old, old position once upon a time.” He siad giving an air of easing the more formal mode he had set originally.

James looked at the CO “well sir I come from a long line of peace keepers. I had some ancestors that were the first official police officers in Ireland then when they came to America my ancestors, continue being peacekeepers and security personnel. My great uncle was on the tel story as security during the battle of wolf 359. then there is my mother, who just made chief of security on the Pathfinder. When I was living with my grandparents on Starbase 655 as a young boy I found the security of the station fascinating, and I became quick friends with most of the officers and the chief of security there. When I was old enough, I asked for a simple job, but the old COS got me into Star fleet. When I graduated from the Academy, I was working on my home station with them. When I made Lieutenant, he sent me for additional training and that’s how I got myself here” he said ending his story.

“Well thats quite the history. Good to hear its in your bloodline. Its a job you have to like.” He replied back. “Tell me your first priorities for security on the Olinski? In general? He then asked.

Parker CO

James pulled a padd from a pocket “ well it looks like security here has been very laxed and the officers have not been doing their job. Like when I first got here on the shuttle, no shuttle Bay officer was present And no security was present. As I looked around more, I found that security was not at assigned stations. I checked the ship sensors and they were just lounging hanging out in the security office. So I’m going to have to do a refresher course with them of what security is supposed to be doing and not just sitting around doing nothing” He put a pad on the captains desk. The pad held information of what the security teams were not doing ways to correct said problems.

“Ok Lt. Good observations. I might give you some advice as you go forward. These are men, women and other species that you will be working with for some time. Obviously dereliction is not permitted on my ship. However I learned a long time ago the best thing a new boss can do in their first week is to watch and observe as they learn the job and ship. Then make informed decisions that will be respected. No one likes the new guy who just shows up and observes one days worth of activities and makes on the spot judgement. Watch, observe, note and all the while setting the standard that you want them to emulate.” The Captain advised.

James listened to watch the CO had to say “ Will captain I’m not just gonna kick in the front door and have them do things my way. I was going to meet with them learn things from their eyes then I was going to do small changes maybe even rotation changes. I’m going to learn from them and hopefully they will learn for me.” He said as he clipped the badge back to his belt. “ I learned the best way to run. A department is to be a leader and not a boss.”
