Sighing she continued. “Don’t get me wrong. All space ships have troubles and Red Alert is no joke, from station to ship to planet or moon. But I think, like sailors and pilots of old that we hear stories about, being in life and death, face to face situations out there,” a hand rose to absently point outwards into space, “means we seek more than the mundane when our adrenalin isn’t rushing. If that makes any sense.” She laughed, shaking her head. “Sorry, tend to ramble. I’m hoping this isn’t your first time around hot head pilots and their supervisors.”

He smiled as rhey walked in. “First time with them on a constant basis, but not my first time dealing with them, no.” He laughed slightly and said “I’m curious how you and your pilots differentiate from your Marine counterparts.”

Abel, CMO

Xandra laughed. “Better manners, for one.” She thought a moment before continuing. “Honestly, not much other than jobs. They are face to face more often and we are nose to nose. Ship wise, that is. Marines use fighters as well but are more apt to be on the ground more. My pilots, if on the ground and fighting, are there because they crashed or were forced down. Usually more the latter than former. Most don’t survive crashes.” She thought about his ‘cross species’ comment about adrenalin compensations. “It’s good to know that stupidity outside of work isn’t confined to humans. Though I have a hard time imagining Vulcans and Breen misbehaving outside of work. They seem overly disciplined. I admit, it’s one of the reasons I tend to end up on the other side of ‘stupid’ outside of work. Out of uniform, off the clock, and on my own, sometimes, especially after a particularly hairy ops, I tend to lose my sense of good judgement.”

“As to other things that differ between us and Marines is probably the combat aspect. While we all are in defensive jobs, ‘protect and defend’, we are a bit less aggressive in that manner than they are. We prefer to block and defend versus run out and kill.” A slightly wicked grin crossed her lips just then. “Though, we are certainly NOT against being aggressive when the situation calls for it. We’ll protect our barn at any cost.” She laughed using an old Earth vernacular for the Hanger Bay.

Abel walked to a table by the windows and said “Well, do try and keep yourself in once piece during off hours. While I love being a doctor, I take offense to. Eing summoned during my downtime.” and he smiled and laughed slightly.

Taking a seat, he said “So tell me about yourself, Commander. Where do you call home? Other than this ship, of course.” and he chuckled dryly.

Abel, CMO

She laughed lightly at the reminder to behave. “I will make sure if I do stupid, that you are already on duty.” She winked and glanced out the window before turning back to Abel.

Half shrugging, she shook her head. “No where, really. Here… space…” She waved her hand to motion out the window. “Mom n dad passed while I was in the Academy. Mom was pretty sick most of my life. Dad went the following year. I’m guessing from a broken heart. Though they said it was a heart attack while at work. Same thing in my book. I am an only child so no siblings to worry about. I’ve considered The Oli my home the last couple yrs. Despite the couple months I’ve been gone, this is my most recent home. I haven’t been back to Earth in years. Been there already so no need to keep returning unless the ‘powers that be’ deem it necessary. I prefer exploring and doing good out here where I can.”

As a server came by, she ordered a plate of pasta with a salad and a sparkling fruit drink. Waiting for him to finish his choice, she asked back, “How about you? Where do you go back to when time permits such things?”

Abel ordered a seafood dish, lemonade, and a bowl of gagh. He shrugged and said “Tried it once on a date, and I really like it.” And he laughed softly. “As for where I go back to, I get very little downtime unfortunately. Even on leave, I find my free time quite limited. Such are the demands of a doctor.” and he sighed. “But my home is the city of Stratos on the planet Ardana. I have not been back there in… what… well, many years.”

Abel, CMO

Xandra laughed. “There are a few things I like from the Klingon. Unfortunately,” she wrinkled her nose slightly and smiled, “that isn’t one of them. I’m sorry you haven’t gotten home in a while. I think everyone should. I’ve never been to Ardana. Tell me about it?” She smiled and took a sip of her drink as it was set before her.

Abel looked conflicted for a moment, but then said “Ardana itself is quite beautiful. It is most known for the floating city of Stratos, where I grew up. In centuries past, there was a great social divide between those that lived in the city, and those that lived under it. Those above thought themselves above. Those below were viewed as ‘less’ than. Stratos dwellers called them ‘Troglodytes’ and told horror stories to their children. ‘If you don’t behave, the Troy’s will come from below and eat you!’ kind of propaganda.” It was obvious from his tone and expression he was not a fan of this. “After we joined the Federation, members of Star Fleet discovered this caste system, and the Andarian government was force to let those living below to move up or be censured and removed from the Federation. So they acquiesced. It took a few generations, but now there is a level of equality amongst everyone. Although there are still some adherents to the older way of thinking. But fortunately they are fading.”

The server arrived with their orders and set it down. Abel thanked them. He then looked back at Xandra. “So where have you been that you do want to go back to?” and he began to prepare a bite of gagh.

Abel, CMO

Xandra thought for a long moment, her pasta set before her idly being tapped by her fork as she thought. “I would say Rosseau V was pretty amazing. The harmonics in its nebula actually make sound. Pretty incredible, at least to me. I wouldn’t say Risa,” her lip curled slightly as she shook her head. “That’s more like just going home to a resort.” She smiled and nodded to his gagh. “I did enjoy the Klingon Temple on Boreth. But I honestly can’t think of any place I pine for, honestly. No real memories built anywhere, I guess. I think I’ve spent so long in space, it’s probably just a cockpit away from the ship that I ‘go to’ most often.”

Taking a bite of her pasta, she laughed. “Pretty sad, huh? That the place I want to be most is in a tiny metal box in space more than a hand’s length from safety. Wonder what the Counselor would say to that?”

Abel shrugged while looking at he food. “Probably that you are a product of your environment. And you should consider that your perspective may be a boon to someone in your line of work.” He stabbed a particularly long worm and twirled it onto his fork. He looked at her and shrugged again with a slight smile and said “But I am no Counselor.” and he took a bite.

Abel, CMO

Watching him eat didn’t bother her as she took another stab at her own food. “Which is a good thing. Getting chastised for getting hurt in a holo program is one thing. Getting grilled about why right afterwards, not sure I could handle you doing both. And if you’re CMO, then you’re a damned, fine doctor and should stay there.”

She laughed finishing her mouthful. “I guess being content out in space is a good thing for a pilot. Thank you for not making a big negative deal about it.” He’d get the feeling, from the almost tired tone of her voice, that most folks did just that.

“So I’m to more cheerful things, shall we? How do you like to spend your spare time? Apparently neither of us travel much. And both our down times are semi plentiful, though short. Sometimes it’s only the mere down time of shifts between getting off and back on duty. I enjoy random holo programs of places we can’t actually go. Nebulas, super novas, most of the beautiful places in space.” She blushed at the admissions then became super intrigued by what was on her plate.

Abel chewed thoughtfully for a moment. He was not prone to lying to people, but he also valued his privacy about his ‘spare time’. So he said “Unfortunately for me,I don’t really have free time even when I have free time. I’m, um, on the board of several different charities-“, which was absolutely true,”- and I usually am assisting them or related organizations when I’m not on duty.” That was also true. So ther than the glaring omission of his ‘other’ work, he technically told the truth… at least as much as easing his conscious required.
