Other than possibly touch low hydration, typical of long shuttle trips, she was fine. Healed locations weren’t stressed and vitals were within parameters.
“I’m glad I don’t have to punish anyone my first day back.”Pausing a moment as he completed his scans, she then asked. “Now to flip the tables. Without breaking confidentiality, I need to know if my pilots are in good shape. And of those who aren’t, how long till they are and what’s keeping them grounded, so to speak.” It seemed easier to kill two birds with one stone, this time around. Instead of waiting and coming back, she figured to ask now.
Though it wouldn’t surprise her if he wasn’t sure, off the top of his head, who was out or down with what.

CAGHe made a few notes in her record and then set the PaDD aside and said “I honestly could not tell you, Commander. When I arrived several weeks ago, I sent a directive to the entire crew telling them that everyone needed to report to medical for a physical. So far, less than thirty percent of the crew has. And no one from your department. In fact, you are the only Department Head to have come in.” He turned off the biobed and said “Its no wonder this ship has had such bad luck retaining Medical officers.” he picked up the PaDD and said “You are in perfect health and fit for duty, Commander. I hope the trip here wasn’t as strenuous as everyone on board seems to think it is.” and he smiled. “And at least I know the crew knows where Sickbay actually is.”
Abel, CMO
The fact not a single pilot or air crewman had reported to a mandatory medical exam raised her hackles. “I see… well I will remedy that immediately. Short of a Command Directive to put them in the air, in a Red Alert status, all pilots are grounded from flights, trainings and SIM use till cleared by Medical.” The smile and gleam in her eyes was more mischievous than mean as she nodded.
“And no. The trip isn’t strenuous. I enjoy the silence, since I know when it will end. And I never travel alone. So loneliness isn’t an issue. The food..” she wavered her hand laughing, “now that’s something else, all together. Speaking of which. I know from experience that Doc’s rarely take care of themselves. I have an hour before my psych check in. Can I grab you something to eat or drink? Happy to bring it back and either join you or leave you to munch between patients. I’m hoping the Cook isn’t a staff member that’s changed in the last few months.”

CAGAbel appeared slightly shocked, but he smiled and said “Um… actually, a lunch sounds quite nice. I would enjoy that.” He looked around and then said “If you can a moment, I will finish one thing and then join you. Thanks you, Commander.” and he stood and went to the nurse’s station, to a patient laying on a biobed and made notes on a chart, then came back. “Ready when you are. Lead on.”
Abel, CMO
Pleasantly surprised by his acceptance, she nodded at his need for a moment. Hopping off the bed, she straightened her tunic and headed for the door. When he joined her, she headed into the hallway to head for lift. “I was thinking the Observation Lounge on five? Great view, and the food is great.” She laughed. “Well, was when I left. I give warning now that if it’s not, I plead ignorance.”
As they headed down the hall, she glanced at him. “So, what brought you to the Oli? Choice or rotation?” She palmed the turbo as they arrived and leaned on the wall, arms crossed to watch him. The Doc was someone pilots had to rely on more than most in space. They kept them fit, aligned and in fighting shape. Most folks figured sitting in a cockpit wasn’t stressful or dangerous, save for being shot down of course. But that wasn’t true. Being ‘in the black’ was not an easy thing, to begin with. Being in a confined space, sometimes unable to see or reach the main ship, was something entirely different. Without realizing it, a memory flashed through her mind that left her with a full body shiver. If he wasn’t paying attention, Abel would miss it.

CAGHe did catch it, but was also a very good doctor. Having just seen her as a patient, he knew there was no physical cause. And psychological was not his field. He simply smiled at her and pretended not to notice. “My previous ship was decommissioned. I was on there for several years, and I prefer ship duty to a station or planet. Fortunately I was given a choice of ships. This one seemed Ike it was most in need, so I came here. I try to go where I’m most needed.”
Abel, CMO
She laughed as he mentioned the ship being needy. “I can agree with you there.” She rocked against her back to push herself to stand as the doors opened. A hand automatically going to press a wayward strand of hair out of her face as the lift doors opened. Stepping in, she moved aside to let him enter. “Not sure about the rest of the crew, but the hanger and the ships, and even the sims, create medical patients on a regular basis.” She laughed and shook her head. “I can think of a half dozen times I’ve ended up on a biobed for reasons unrelated to combat just cause of training or foolishness. This crew tends to play a little harder than most. But I think it’s because when we can’t play, we are in a status that’s harder than most.”
Abel shrugged. “Thats actually a very normal response to people who face danger to life and limb on a consistent basis. Interestingly, not limited to just your species. Its a common reaction across a myriad of species, cultures, and systems.”
Sighing she continued. “Don’t get me wrong. All space ships have troubles and Red Alert is no joke, from station to ship to planet or moon. But I think, like sailors and pilots of old that we hear stories about, being in life and death, face to face situations out there,” a hand rose to absently point outwards into space, “means we seek more than the mundane when our adrenalin isn’t rushing. If that makes any sense.” She laughed, shaking her head. “Sorry, tend to ramble. I’m hoping this isn’t your first time around hot head pilots and their supervisors.”

CAGHe smiled as rhey walked in. “First time with them on a constant basis, but not my first time dealing with them, no.” He laughed slightly and said “I’m curious how you and your pilots differentiate from your Marine counterparts.”
Abel, CMO
Xandra laughed. “Better manners, for one.” She thought a moment before continuing. “Honestly, not much other than jobs. They are face to face more often and we are nose to nose. Ship wise, that is. Marines use fighters as well but are more apt to be on the ground more. My pilots, if on the ground and fighting, are there because they crashed or were forced down. Usually more the latter than former. Most don’t survive crashes.” She thought about his ‘cross species’ comment about adrenalin compensations. “It’s good to know that stupidity outside of work isn’t confined to humans. Though I have a hard time imagining Vulcans and Breen misbehaving outside of work. They seem overly disciplined. I admit, it’s one of the reasons I tend to end up on the other side of ‘stupid’ outside of work. Out of uniform, off the clock, and on my own, sometimes, especially after a particularly hairy ops, I tend to lose my sense of good judgement.”
“As to other things that differ between us and Marines is probably the combat aspect. While we all are in defensive jobs, ‘protect and defend’, we are a bit less aggressive in that manner than they are. We prefer to block and defend versus run out and kill.” A slightly wicked grin crossed her lips just then. “Though, we are certainly NOT against being aggressive when the situation calls for it. We’ll protect our barn at any cost.” She laughed using an old Earth vernacular for the Hanger Bay.

CAGAbel walked to a table by the windows and said “Well, do try and keep yourself in once piece during off hours. While I love being a doctor, I take offense to. Eing summoned during my downtime.” and he smiled and laughed slightly.
Taking a seat, he said “So tell me about yourself, Commander. Where do you call home? Other than this ship, of course.” and he chuckled dryly.
Abel, CMO
She laughed lightly at the reminder to behave. “I will make sure if I do stupid, that you are already on duty.” She winked and glanced out the window before turning back to Abel.
Half shrugging, she shook her head. “No where, really. Here… space…” She waved her hand to motion out the window. “Mom n dad passed while I was in the Academy. Mom was pretty sick most of my life. Dad went the following year. I’m guessing from a broken heart. Though they said it was a heart attack while at work. Same thing in my book. I am an only child so no siblings to worry about. I’ve considered The Oli my home the last couple yrs. Despite the couple months I’ve been gone, this is my most recent home. I haven’t been back to Earth in years. Been there already so no need to keep returning unless the ‘powers that be’ deem it necessary. I prefer exploring and doing good out here where I can.”
As a server came by, she ordered a plate of pasta with a salad and a sparkling fruit drink. Waiting for him to finish his choice, she asked back, “How about you? Where do you go back to when time permits such things?”
