Last night had been bitter sweet. Her old quarters were the same and were merely, once more, a blank canvas to remake into something personal. At least she knew what she wanted where, this time. The auburn haired CAG had spent the better part of two days on a shuttle while heading to meet The Olinski and had been grateful for a shower and familiar surroundings.

Granted, things were different this time. For one thing, Ric was gone. He had left before she had, before. And even after a brief weekend together, she had realized they were finished. It had been awkward as if neither knew what they were doing. Even the goodbye kiss a few nights ago had been brief and not as warm as she had hoped it would be. So she had left him with a smile, wished him well, and promised herself she would move on and let him do the same.

And now… here she was… back on the Olinski as CAG once more.

Today was ‘check in’ day. Medical, Psych, Security and, eventually, the XO if she cleared everything else.

Coming around the corner, she sidestepped someone leaving Medical. She didn’t recognize them but replied to the greeting and walked into the bay. A small smile lit her face as she looked for the Chief Medical officer, wondering if much of the staff had changed in her absence.

A Bolian nurse looked up and said “Hello Commander. What can we do for you today?” before there was a chirp on her desk and an unfamiliar voice said “Lieutenant H’ol, please have the Lieutenant Commander come to my office. She has an appointment.” The nurse smiled at Primage and said “Just around the corner to the left, Commander. Dr. Abel will see you.”

The door slid open at the approach of the CAG. Inside the office was well organized and was decorated like an office for a writer rather than a doctor. It was warm and inviting. Around the room were bits and things that gave a slight look into the office’s current resident. There was a broken tricorder in a small display, carbon-scoring across it’s surface. A small doll, obviously well-loved and old, sitting on a shelf up high. A holo of two people smiling and waving. A jar of dirt. A knife with a broken blade. A small pile of shiny rocks. A petri dish with some kind of sample that was encased in a cube of transparent aluminum. These and other things were set in places of esteem… including a singular medal that stood out. It wasn’t a Star Fleet award, either… it was the Federation Peace Medal. A small plaque on the front read ‘Awarded this day to Dr. Siegfried Abel for his contributions to peace and his efforts to decrease suffering throughout the Galaxy.’

The occupant of the room was seated behind his desk. He appeared human, and was quite striking in appearance. Dark red hair framed a startlingly handsome face, and bright green eyes that seemed to be both jovial and serious simultaneously looked at Primage. The figure stood up and smiled, extending a hand. “Lieutenant Commander Primage. A pleasure. Please, come in. I am Dr. Abel, the new Chief Medical Officer. Please have a seat, and I will get you checked in and ready for duty, alright?”

Abel, CMO

Xandra looked around the room and the edge of her lip curled up in appreciation to the personality of the room. Making a mental note to ask about some of the items later, she quickly looked to the man as he rose.

The young woman reached over the desk and broadened her smile as she clasped hands with the man. It impressed her that he offered it, since most didn’t bother when it came to pilots. Rank or not, most were treated like grunts. Her hand met his with equal pressure as she waited to see if he was one of those who would try and see how hard he could squeeze, just to prove he was better.

His handshake was firm, but not overly so. And the accompanying smile was genuine, not forced.

“A pleasure, Sir. I’d say ‘welcome tothe Olinski’ but it seems I’m the late comer this time. I’m glad to see we got someone pleasant to replace the other Doc. I was worried we’d end up with some terrible space troll this time around. Two nice Docs in as row is a pleasant surprise.”

“Well, I don’t know about nice, but I try to not be too much of an arrogant blow-hard.” Abel said with a soft chuckle. “Please, have a seat. I know you are busy, so I will try to make this as quick and painless as possible.” he said with a half-grin. He pulled up her record on his desk and began reviewing it. “So let me start with the basics. Have you had any changes in your health since your last physical? Any injury or illness that isn’t in your record?”

Abel, CMO

Xandra smiled. As he commented on his behavior and smiles, she added, “I can work with that.”

Taking the offered seat, she shook her head. “No, Sir. Clean bill of health when I left here. And clean when I left the station. I’ve also been cleared from the monthly psych evals. I know that’s not your preview. But I don’t like the idea of right hand and left hand not knowing one another. Up until my clearance to return to the Olinski I was in as monthly mandatory rotation with the shrink. I’d been affected by some wayward tech on a planet we investigated last year.”

For a second, her eyes left his as she made the admittance. “I wasn’t myself.” Taking a deep breath as she pressed it all to the back of her mind, she glances back up, the smile back on her face. “But there’s been no need for sleep meds or anything else for nearly ninety days and I’ve been cleared to return here as CAG once more.”

The edge of her eyebrow rose slightly as the woman nodded towards the Doc, “With your blessing, course.”

It was probably more than he wanted to hear. But she abhorred secrets. And the Doc had as much right, and need, to know if her psych part as the CNS would need to know she was physically cleared as well. Some things were her own. But in space, as a pilot, those who saw to her fitness and we’ll bring deserved no shadows in regards to her past.

Abel looked at her as she spoke and he nodded. “Forgive me, I only just now had your record. Can you walk me through what happened? Or ar least what medications you were taking? And if the cessation of the sleep aid was recommended by your last doctor?”

Abel, CMO

Xandra took a deep breath and smiled. “I guess it’s easily looked up, so there’s no point in dancing around it. On my stationing prior to my last time here, there were deaths. I was blamed for them and my beliefs of another on site was dismissed due to lack of evidence. Same lack of evidence exhonorated me, but not before plenty of harm was done to me and others. My mind was not right and I admit that the medication, fluoxetine for anti-depression, was necessary.” She laughed slightly and shook her head. “Taken me a year to admit I needed it back then. I was taken off the meds a month into my last stint on the Olinski and shortly after I was promoted to Wing Leader. The sleeping meds, benzodiazepine if I recall, was removed a few months later. And I have been on no meds for about a year, now. My monthly required psych appointments were also ended several months prior to my leave from here. I was promoted to CAG before I left. And in my last stationing, I was given clean bills of health both on arrival and departure. I will admit to the occasional nightmare, but they are no longer terrors and no longer a hindrance to my performance or duties. I am happy to get you a full copy of the report and subsequent diagnosis if you desire. Though I am sure, with your clearance, you can acquire it yourself.”

Abel smiled at her and said “I’ll review it later, and I am very glad to hear that you have made such positive progress. You should be very proud of yourself.” His words and tone were sincere and comforting, and he looked back down at the file.

At the end of her speech, she exhaled as if she had been holding her breath the whole time. It was the first time she had been able to speak about the events and the subsequent treatments since she had told Ric. It had been inside her, like a brand, that she thought everyone could see. It had affected her deeply till Ric had convinced her she was more than a medical by line, more than a treatment prescription. She had overcome her background with his help and that of the rest of the Olinski crew. This had become the family and home she was glad to be back with.

After a few moments he said “Ok, then… why don’t we get you on a biobed and take a look at you, shall we? Please, follow me.” He stood up and led her out to a bed at the back of sickbay. “Please have a seat up here if you would.” and he patted the bed as he began activating the diagnostic equipment.

She smiled back. “Thank you. And I know it’s a daily thing. So no worries there. I will keep up with Psych anyway.” She laughed slightly, following him out the door. “I learned a long time ago, better to be a good patient now than a more needy and stubborn one later.”

As he motioned to the bed, the auburn haired woman hopped up on the bed and sat, hands clasped in her lap as he began. “How is the Olinksi treating you? I hope you have enjoyed your stay so far. And I hope none of the pilots or air crew have caused you any grief. Them I can deal with if they have.” She smiled once more and winked. “Advantage to being the new ‘boss’.”

Abel smiled and said “The ship is much larger than my last one, but it has been a nice change of pace. And everyone has been very nice so far. And no, no pilots or air crew have needed a talking to.” with a soft chuckle at the end. He ran the scans and watched the displays as her vital signs and basic health were being measured and analyzed.
