“I’d like to go to the bridge to check the senors and the captain logs.” Kolar suggested unhelpfully, lets all separate, it will be much easier to over-power us.

Balfor Kolar CSO

“I think that the first thing we sh-should do is find a way to restore power,” Jason shivered testily as he put an oxygen mask over his face and unfolded a set cold weather clothing. “I don’t think the sensors or the logs will tell us ANYTHING before we do.” The lightweight, adjustable bodysuit came with a hood, goggles, and a lower face cover. Each suit came with a power cell smaller than a human fingernail that powered the heating elements that could maintain a stable body temperature down to -20 degrees Fahrenheit (or -29 degrees Celsius). He sat down on the step to the transporter and removed his shoes before standing up and climbing into the cold weather suit. “Mister Gould, feel free to call the shots until we get life support back on. Where do we go from here?”

Jason Harn, XO, giving someone else on the team a chance to lead for once

“If there is no damage, there is very little we can do in engineering that we can’t do remotely from the bridge.” Kolar offered but didn’t seem to expect that his point would be taken.

Ch’zaolrirh grabbed one of the outfits as he didn’t want to be the odd alien out. Just the same he kept the hood off, but made sure to get the face mask on since Oxygen was going to be a problem if the ship remained offline for too long.

Michael thought for a moment. “We go down to engineering and turn on main power. From the looks of things, there wasn’t a struggle. Everything looks intact. So it must be possible to reboot all the systems.” He led the way to a jeffries tube. “It looks like either a total systems shutdown or a complete power failure. I’m guessing option A. I can’t imagine a way a blunt force hit with microwaves-” He started trying to force open the door. “-could be targeted enough to specifically hit one system. Upside is: either way, all we have to do is get the power back on.” He finally lifted the door. “Less than glamorous way to get around. But it doesn’t require any power. Follow me.” He climbed in. He felt like an Ensign again, climbing through the jeffries tubes to get around.

“They don’t make a Jeffries tube in a size Harn do they?” Jason groaned as he put his shoes back on, followed by the cold weather boots. He grunted and groaned as he followed the others into the internal maintenance conduits used to provide crew access to various ship’s systems. And he thought that squeezing into a cockpit was awkward.

Kolar was surprisingly agile heading down the jefferies tubes, placing his feet outside the rail and sliding down only checking his speed with his hands on the ‘steps’ every other rung.

When they were finally a deck below, Michael pushed through into Main Engineering. He made a beeline for the warp core. He had to get the reactor started. He went over to a console and looked for some way to make his tricorder into a short term battery for one console.

-Lt Michael Gould, CE

“If its a cold restart, we could be talking about a half an hour to get the system to temperature and that’s skipping a whole bunch of important steps.” He pulled out his tricorder doing a quick scan of the area and then the systems.

The COS remained by the Jeffries tube until everyone had safely made their way out. Once everyone was accounted for he slipped in behind the rest of the team as he examined their surroundings for anything out of place. He wasn’t sure what he might be looking for as he rarely spent time in engineering areas.

Jason was rubbing the back of his neck with one hand while rubbing the small of his back with his fist. The cold weather clothing, while impressively thin compared to the 22nd century version, still seemed bulky enough to interfere with even most cursory of massages. “Okay, I guess the next two questions are WHAT caused the Dragoon to lose power and IS IT SAFE to restore power?”

Jason Harn, XO

Kolar walked over to the taller Harn leaned in, like he occasionally did with the Captain when he had an idea or point that he didn’t need the entire bridge/away team to hear, “We could have used the log from the bridge, which I could have remotely powered and accessed with my tricorder to get those answers.”

Kolar

“Now you tell me,” Jason groaned as he adjusted the thermal control that was located on the left wrist of his cold suit. “Oh well, I’d rather take the turbolift up to the bridge than take all of those flights of stairs anyway.”

There did not seem to be anything amiss in Engineering: no signs of violence nor signs of any damage to the core nor the consoles. From tricorder readings, it would seem that the core was actually taken offline. However, due to the time the core had been offline, there was only a 32% certainty on this point. Yet, there was no other signs to show anything but that it was taken offline deliberately.

GM

“Nothing seems broken,” Jason muttered as he took readings with his tricorder. “Are the dilithium crystals intact?”

Jason Harn, XO, who could have sworn that he posted this two days ago

The Counselor could only stand to the side and let the others around him work. The entire situation seemed weird, especially since there wasn’t a struggle on the ship and no sign of the crew.

CNS

Kolar waved his tricorder in that direction. “It looks good from here. But the engineering systems would have a finer eye than my tricorder.”

CSO

“Do you think some of us should get to the bridge before we try to turn this ship back on?” Jason asked, “or are we comfortable operating the Dragoon’s sensors from here? When we restore power, we don’t know how the planet’s defenses are going to react. They should be inoperative, but still…” He let his words hang in the air to make his point.

Jason Harn, XO

Michael finished hotwiring a console with his tricorder. The sole screen came alive. “This, my friends, is why we’re here. We could have a log from any terminal. Or, a log, and real time feedback on every move we make restarting the ship. No one ever wants to go to engineering. There’s more information here than anywhere else.” He brought up the most recent available status updates on the warp core. He thought that knowing what happened as power failed might show why power failed. Especially to an engineer’s eye.

-Lt Michael Gould, CE

Jason snorted in laughter. Gould was perfectly correct of course, but the controls here weren’t exactly user friendly and often multiple engineers were needed to do something that one person on the bridge could do by himself. “Tell us what to do, Mister Gould, we’re at your disposal.”

Jason Harn, XO

Ch’zaolrirh remained towards the back of the group. There were no immediate safety concerns for him to address other than the decreasing oxygen levels. He still wished to view the bridge and the ship’s armory before they left the Dragoon, but remained ready to assist with the restart for now.
