“I think I found something!” exclaimed NE Post. He brought up a rather convoluted item. From tricorder scans, that would be what was needed. NE Post had found one, they needed at least three.

“Wouldn’t it be easier if we replicate the part to fix their power supply and then they can replicate their own parts?” asked the NE.

Faraday looked over the item the NE had scrounged up. “Perfect, Post,” he said, handing it back. “And yes; let’s get that in where it can power the replicators. Then we can get the parts made for the other systems.”

The blue haze of transporters buzzed to life beside them, and the Cardassian engineers, looking uncomfortable in Starfleet issue environment suits, beamed in.

“Perfect,” Thomas said. “Happen to know where we can find more of these?” He held up the piece of conduit before he tossed it to Post, followed by a handheld plasma welder. “Go get that installed.”

CE Faraday

“Where did you find this? We thought the conduits were all destroyed during the attack!” remarked one of the Cardassians. “With this, we can get the conduit for the deuterium to enter the MARA chamber but we would need to get another to allow the energy to exit the chamber. Could you tell us where you found this?”

“There was a box in the debris that had this part in it,” replied NE Post. “Scans showed us that it might be suitable.”

“Where in the debris?” asked another Cardassian.

NE Post looked to the CE for permission to proceed.

Faraday nodded and held out a hand. “Lead the way, Ensign.”

Thomas waited for the Cardassians to follow Post before following as well, keeping an eye on them. The Union and the Federation had history, after all, even if they didn’t currently have weapons on them.

CE Faraday

Post led the Cardassians to what looked like a small alcove or closet. One of the Cardassians looked at the other. “This was our chief’s storage corner,” he said. “He died bravely during the fight with the Breen. I do not know why he had that part there.”

“I remember he was trying to find a way to make the engine more efficient,” said the other Cardassian. “Perhaps this was a part he was trying to improve …”

The Starfleet officers could hear emotion in their voices. It was apparent that these two officers held their chief in high esteem.

Faraday let the silence hang in the air a beat. “Your chief sounds like someone I would like to have met,” he said. “Let’s make sure his loss wasn’t in vain. How quickly can we get that part in place and replicate two more?”

He glanced at the chrono on his wrist display. “We have thirty-five minutes before we need to leave to beat the Breen force that’s en route.” He looked to the two of them. “If it’s going to be longer, just say it, and we’ll go back to the Olinski now, and figure out a way to get you and your people back to Cardassia.”

CE Faraday

“We will need two of these to get our replicators online to effect repairs. Once the replicators are online, we would be able to replicate the parts for our life support systems,” said the first Cardassian engineer. “Would you be able to help us by replicating an additional part?”

Faraday nodded, taking the part from them. He placed it on a clear space on the floor, then tagged the location in his wrist computer before activating his com.

=^= Faraday to Olinski. I need a part replicated so we can complete repairs. I’m sending the coordinates for the part. Please replicate it and send back both of them. That will get replicators here online, and then they can get the parts needed for life support so we can all go home. =^=

He looked to the Cardassian engineers. “Will that leave you enough time to get out of here?” he asked them. “We’re not going to leave you here to face the Breen.”

CE Faraday

“Yes,” said the Cardassian engineer. He seemed rather disappointed that the Cardassians were going to stand aside and allow the Federation to face the Breen. He thought of how much the Cardassians have fallen …
