Captain Parker had become quite accustomed to the out of a different time XO he had acquired several years ago. However with the successful aCO performance of Harn he knew that time was not in his favor. Given his previous command experience, even if it had not been in this century, it was just a matter of time before SF came a calling for the XO to sit in a center chair. In fact Sid had told Harn that very thing in their last conversation while at the SB. Well that day had come sooner than later for sure. As Harn was on shore leave SF had offered him his own command of a starship. They did not have the exact ship ready yet but they wanted him and made the offer and promotion. To which a conflicted but grateful Harn accepted. It was a good day for the Olinski and Sid in particular. He had hoped Harn would get this chance/ However he had become a much loved XO and it was a hard thing to lose a person like that. Shirazi was the only other XO he could compare to the level of Harn and that was a painful loss of several reasons.

That left a big whole on the roster. However he had once again only one candidate he wanted in that chair. It was a man he had offered the role to before and had turned it down. This did not stop him from making the offer again. He called Lt Commander Balfor Kolar into his Ready Room before the any new orders came in for a mission. He waited for his trusted CSO and 2nd officer to arrive.

Parker CO

Kolar was a logical man. People would argue Vulcan like in his demeanor and logic, even though he thought that was an exaggeration. He was calm, pacifistic, but not emotionless in his logic. But whether it came from the lack of emotion or the calm he could see what was coming in this meeting. The Captain was either going to alert him to a new XO coming on board and to determine how his most senior and longest tenured officer is going to respond or he was going to ask if Kolar wanted it.

An interesting dilemma. Despite his series of advancements, Kolar did not long to be a senior officer. He just was qualified for it and accepted it as a matter of course.

He paused in his series of of thoughts as he came to the ready room. Pressing the chime he announced himself.

The Captain activated the door button under his desk and the door swooshed open.

“Come in Lt. Commander and have a seat.” The Captain said more in an informal way than in his “formal” voice. This was not uncommon. He had known Kolar for a very long time but they usually kept it business.

Kolar looked at the seat across for a moment before sitting in it, despite to moments pause he rested in smoothly.

“I need to inform you that Commander Harn has been promoted to a Captain and give his own command. Which I am very happy and proud for him. I believe you might hold the same opinion that after his performance in my absence it was the right call for him. However this leaves me with an empty chair. Any thoughts on that?” The Captain explained and then asked. He had wanted Kolar to have this job in the past and he had turned it down. If he was to offer it again he needed to know the man wanted it. After all this was not a half hearted kind of position. There was no questioning Kolar’s dedication to the Olinski but that did not equal the want of command.

Parker CO

“Congratulations certainly would be in order for Commander, now Captain Harn. Despite his displacement in time, he adapted with an adeptness that was astounding.” He paused. “The Executive position on the Olinski is generally the premiere stepping stone for Captain in the Meridian Fleet. I think you would find no shortage of officers willing to do just about anything to be considered.” He said in a measured fashion. Then he paused, stared at a point right before his fingers that he steepled.

“I would prefer that you would not open the position to candidates.” His gaze returned to the Captain, it was a little more focused than his normal. Somehow normally when Kolar looked at someone they felt calmer, sedate, there was a warmth that radiated from him a gentleness - not now. He was more intense, but not in a dangerous way.

“With your permission, I would like to resign as Chief Science Officer and assume the duties of the Executive Officer. I believe I’m ready and I’d serve the Olinski well.”

Balfor Kolar

The Captain almost sighed.

“Thank Orions belt Lt Cmd. I thought you would turn it down again.” He said. “I accept your resignation as CSO but until we fill that role you will have to tie down that department as well. Not unlike then Commander Spock did on the Enterprise.”

“Well that is a role model I could only hope to compare in any appreciable way to.”

“I hereby promote you to the XO position and these come with the job.” He said as he pushed a small box over to him. Inside would be Commander pips.

Kolar looked at the box, a promotion in rank as well… it was a two-for. “I am honored. Thank you sir.”
