Jason Harn felt self conscious as he walked down the corridor on deck four towards the chief medical officer’s quarters. He had taken the stairs from his quarters on deck three just to avoid the amount of stares he’d get in the turbolift. Did he really have to wear a tuxedo? Why couldn’t he have worn a formal uniform or a 24th century civilian equivalent to the tuxedo? Nobody wore a bow tie anymore, and Jason was probably one of the only people outside a theatre troupe who still knew how to tie one. Earlier he had decided that a 22nd century tux was the way to tell her that he wasn’t going to hide from her and that he trusted her enough to be the real Jason Harn warts and all. Now he was wondering if it conveyed the message that he was too stuck in his own past to look to the future. He only hoped that the bouquet of flowers he was carrying wasn’t too much. He had already hurt her feelings by holding her at arm’s length. Now he had to make sure that he didn’t come on too strong.

Stopping outside Bennie’s quarters, Jason took a deep breath and rang the chime. Even if the anachronistic image he presented was all wrong at least it let Bennie know that this was a real date and not just two shipmates spending some off duty time together.

Inside her quarters, Bennie smiled when she heard the chime then hoped she hadn’t overdressed. “No, he said it was a real date and that it was formal, so this should be fine.” Still, she took a deep breath as she walked to her door. The gown she wore was silver and sparkled delightfully. It made her feel good just to have it on, but the most important thing was that Jason thought it was appropriate.

With surprising butterflies in her stomach, she opened the door and saw him.

“Not half as enchanting as you my dear,” Jason purred as bent over and kissed her hand. When he stood up straight again he took the time to let his eyes really drink her in. Bennie really was enchanting. Her burnished brunette hair cascaded down her slender shoulders like a waterfall. Her full kissable lips perfectly accentuated her high cheekbones, flawless skin, green eyes and symmetrical features. The sleeveless silvery dress she wore highlighted her feminine figure and gave her a slender, willowy look. “Wow,” he said quietly as he momentarily broke character. “These are for you my dear,” he smiled as he handed her the bouquet he had prepared for her.
