He shrugged and said “I know a lot of officers that think that way. We are raised on takes of heroics and great deeds done for the common good and welfare. And those are wonderful. But those called to make thise kinds of stands are few and far between, I think. Most of us will serve, learn, and live long enough to enjoy what our lives spent away from hearth and home allowed us to have. This…” and he gestured around, “… this is my dream. To have a small place to call mine, a place and peace I know I earned. That, to me, is what all of this about.” and he smiled and poured the whiskey. “And there is my rambling quotient for the day, I think.”
Abel, CMO
She smiled. “You’re right. I hope you get your dream. As to your ramblings, don’t stop.” She laughed. “You almost have me convinced it’s worth it to retire and find a nice ‘hearth’ as well.” She blushed and smiled. Looking out the window at the sea, she sighed. “I could get used to a place like this. I’m thinking this program needs to be saved. You’ll have unfettered access to it as well, if you wish.” She looked at him and imagined them having dinner like this more often. She blushed at the idea and busied herself with the butter for her bread.
Lissi
CEAbel looked at the table and said “Only thing it’s missing is a big bed with lots of heavy blankets. And maybe some sheep grazing outside. Then… perfection.” and he took a bite of the dish. He chewed and swallowed and said “But this needs no improvement. This is fantastic. Best thing I’ve had in my mouth in quite a while.” and he took another bite.
Abel, CMO
She laughed about the bed. “I’ll keep that in mind next time.” As they tucked into the pie, she laughed. “Guess we need to work on that then, huh? You should always have good things against your lips,” she grinned at him as her own double meaning slid from her lips.
Lissi
CEEither choosing not to acknowledge… or perhaps more accurately simply not registering the innuendo… he nodded enthusiastically. “Oh yes! I do love new experiences when it comes to trying new things. I will probably try anything at least once. I mean, you never what all you will like till you try it, right?” he asked and took another bite and did a little happy food dance in his chair.
Abel, CMO
She laughed at his happiness and sat in silence with him a few moments as they ate. About halfway thru, she looked at him. “I happen to look up your hobby, Abel. I wanted to see what I could do to help.” She smiled softly and moved her left hand to touch his arm. “I think it’s amazing! The things you do. Why don’t you want anyone to know, Abel?” Her question was soft, and not accusatory. She was so proud of him and it showed in her face and her soft smile.
Lissi
CEHe shrugged as he took another bite. He chewed slowly and then took a drink before speaking. He didnt look at her as he did, his voice was slightly wary and a touch… well, resigned. “My whole life I was part of a privaledged class. My family had means and wealth, and they used that generate even more means and wealth. They planned out every aspect of my life. Even me being a doctor.” and he sighed and leaned back and looked at her, his arm sliding from her touch.
She slowly pulled her hand back slowly, letting it rest beside her plate.
“I learned how they used money… influence… power… and it made me sick to my stomach. I couldn’t stand the non-stop fawning and groveling of those that wanted some of what we had. And the overt arrogance that came from wealth. So… I left. I joined Star Fleet and cut all ties. I just wanted to be myself, not their version of me. I went 5 years without contact, even though they tried… gods above how they tried… and I thought I was done. Then… not even a week after coming aboard the Odin, they managed to buy a Fleet Medical Officer who called me directly under false pretense. I answered, it was my parents claiming some kind of moral change of heart. Gave me all the family funds and properties, kept just enough to live on and one of the summer homes. Said I could do whatever I wanted… So I started the Foundation. Thought I could some good, spend all the money, and then be done.” and he laughed.
“Turns out there is something inherent in my family that makes it impossible to make bad financial decisions.” and he laughed again and took a drink. “I spent a lot, but invested just enough to make sure the projects I started could be finished. Those investments did… well… very well. And now I have about two times the amount of financing I started with… even after spending.” and he took another drink and said “So that is a long winded way of explaining that knowing someone is wealthy makes people act differently than who they are. So… I am wary who I share that part of me with. So how long have you known, Lissi?” he asked, almost as if he knew the answer and that this ‘date’ wasn’t what he thought.
Abel, CMO
She took it all in. And when he asked how long she’d known, the way she watched him ‘shift’ made her wonder if the date was now over. “This morning.” She said then looked down at her hand. Her finger tips tracing over a soft color on color embroidery that fringed the cloth beneath their place settings. “I had wanted to come to dinner tonight with a donation to help.” She looked at him and had a soft smile. “I guess you don’t need it.” She took a deep breath and pushed her nearly empty plate back so she could turn sideways and rest her elbow on the table where her plate had been.
“I understand, Abel… I do. I haven’t lived it, I mean. But I can understand. And you have my word no one will ever hear any of this from me. I swear. And I won’t bring it up again, I’m sorry. But please. Don’t let this ruin tonight,” she smiled softly and reached to touch his knee since he had drawn his hand back. “Or us… I am really enjoying time with you and I don’t want it to end because I ruined it.” She removed her hand and looked at him. If this was the end, she would destroy the program. Her mind knew it was a petty thing to cling to at this moment.
Lissi
CEHe looked at her and when she said ‘this morning’, a look of relief swept across his face. “Oh… good. That’s much better than I had thought. And no, you haven’t ruined a thing. Not at all. I just… well…” and he took a breath. “Its hard to find anyone to be… interested… in because there is always the question of are they just in it for the ‘perks’ and not really for me. Petty, yes, but it’s true. And it is something I tried to deal with up front, but I learned quickly that people are very good liars when properly motivated.” and he chuckled. “So I am glad that isn’t the case here. Because I very much enjoy being with you, as well. It’s… not complicated. And that is something in short supply in my life at the moment.” And he laughed again.
Abel, CMO
She shook her head. “I’m sorry your family was that way. Mine was the opposite. I grew up believing mine wanted nothing to do with me. Only to find out I have just shy of three months to claim my House and inheritance. So,” she shrugged, “I am not here for what you do out there.” She pointed over the cliff motioning to the space beyond it. “I’m here for what and who you are here, in this cabin, right now with me.” She smiled and she looked down a moment later, turning back to her plate as she felt the blush rise on her cheeks. “Sorry… but I mean that, Abel,” she said and looked back up at him, “I’m not after you for whatever money you have. Honestly, I’d rather every penny remained in the ‘hobby’.” She smiled.
Lissi
CE“Well, inheritances aren’t all they’re cracked up to be, trust me. I know of what I speak.” and he chuckled. He moved his plate away and set his hands on the table. “So is dessert next? Or do we have time to take a walk?” he asked softly.
Abel, CMO
She smiled. “Definitely time for a walk. Can always take the dessert with us. But we should have another hour or so left.” She smiled. “And I want my inheritance because it’s my House and my name. If I do not claim it, the Council has the right to divide it up among the ruthless and wealthy. And my name, my father’s name, R’osh, could be purged from that day forward. Any child I have couldn’t have any claim on their Klingon side. So even if I proclaim a steward, and leave them for good, I have to claim it or it’s lost as are those who come after me.” She took a deep breath and she shook her head. “Talk for another time. You wanted a walk, I believe?”
Lissi
CEHe inclined his head and said “Indeed. Let’s see what the view is like.” and he stood and pulled on the sweater and hat and then offered her his arm.
Abel, CMO
She rose as he slid the sweater and hat on and took the offered arm. “We can go up to a mile in any direction, I believe. Further if we set the cart of food in the alcove. Depends how far you want to go, Abel.” She smiled and stepped outside with him. The breeze tugging at the loose strands of hair around her face.
Lissi
CE“Let’s just go to the edge and look at the ocean. That all right with you?” he asked as the breeze sang softly across the land between them and the edge of the cliffs.
Abel, CMO
“Mmhhmmm,” she nodded with a smile. Her hand rose to rest on the arm hooked to his. “I’ll have to be careful around you, Doc. I believe you have planted a seed of corruption called ‘retirement’ in my brain.” She smiled and glanced at him. “I may want that one day as well.”
They moved to the cliffside and she smiled. But when they got close and the waves bashing the shore and the beach came into view, Lissi pulled up short and hard, her heart suddenly pounding in her ears louder than the waves or the wind. “I…” she slid her arm from his and stepped back till the calm water was all she saw. Forcing a smile she crossed her arms. “Go ahead. It’s an amazing view. You should see it.” Her jaw was shaking.
Lissi
CEHe looked at her and watched for a moment and said =^= Computer. Make waves calm and rolling, no breakers. =^= and there was a chirp and instantly the breaking waves stopped and became gentle ones lapping the coastline as far as they could see. He looked at her and said “That better?”
Abel, CMO
She nodded slightly. “A little, thank you. I just…” she tried to laugh but it bordered on hysterical. “Oceans and the surf. Never been a fan.” She said in a polite way that they scared the hell out of her. “Can’t explain it. I guess it’s the thought of the unknown depth and what’s down there.” She smiled and as calming slightly but hadn’t moved forward any more.
Lissi
CEHe nodded and said “We can just walk along here, no need to go closer.” and he walked next to her and put his hand on her back to steer her away and towards the stone path.
Abel, CMO
She let him walk on the cliff side and smiled. “I’m sorry. You don’t have to pamper me. You can go to the cliffs if you want. I’m sure you could even get steps to the beach if you want.” She stepped a bit closer as he put his hand on her lower back. “But thank you. It’s beautiful out here, honest. I’m sorry I ruined the moment, thought.” She set her feet on the stone path and sighed as the cliffs ended up behind them.
Lissi
CE
He looked straight ahead and smiled. “You didn’t ruin anything. The moment is what is because of who I share it with, not the scenery. That’s just the backdrop.” and they began walking down the path.
