Lissi smiled. “Honestly, not much.” A short laugh followed when she realized how saw that sounded. “I enjoy running. Sometimes on the holodeck, but usually around the ship. Full rounds of five or six decks including the emergency ladders in between is a good workout. I love stroghanoff as well. Though I have no idea which mushrooms are best. And for seafood, I’m more of a scallops and shrimp person.” She had another bite and smiled. “So how long have you had the hobby with the medical assistance program?”

He smiled, but it seemed a bit forced. “Oh, about a year now? Things tend to be a bit of a blur out here sometimes.” and he took another drink. “So why engineering? Is it a profession, or a passion?” he asked with a smile, this one more genuine.

Abel, CMO

It was Lissi’s turn to be a bit uncomfortable. “Neither, actually. I joined the Academy planning a career in medicine. My other is a doctor and I followed her everywhere, growing up.” She poked at her food a moment before looking up at him. “Unfortunately, knowing it in here,” she tapped her head, “and practically, were two different things. In the heat of the moment, I can give better triage than most nurses I know. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the head for nomenclature and couldn’t remember what was connected to the metacarpal for the life of me.” She shook her head and laughed. “I had taken engineering as a secondary knowledge. I figured, second to security, more medical issues in space would come from Engineering. So I wanted to know what things they worked on and the injuries that could occur. Sadly, I excelled in engineering. So I switched, added an additional year to my Academy time to make up back courses,” she held her hand up, “and here I am.” She took a sip of her drink and smiled. “Seems I am an engineer cause I’m a washout in the medical field. I’m glad you didn’t wash out.”

He raised his eyebrows and said “No, I did not. But I didn’t have much choice in the matter, so…” and he took a bite and again chewed slowly and took a drink. “I often wonder what other interests I might have pursued. I don’t have a head for mechanical things, so in that allow me the luxury of being jealous of you, if I may?” and he laughed softly.

Lissi laughed. “If I can be jealous of your knowledge, it’s a deal. You know… if you ever have need, I’m not half bad in the medical arena.” Smiling she tilted her head slightly. “What kinds of things outside of medicine do you think of? Perhaps how things work, or why, or with all you see in medicine, maybe a scientific curiosity about the sicknesses and diseases you deal with?” She took another bite, trying to think of something else she could offer to help him relax, or pursue as something he’s wanted but not tried.

He laughed slightly into his napkin as he wiped his mouth and said “Oh stars… I don’t think I have had a chance to think of anything outside of this ship or my… erm… hobby… since I got here. Honestly? I can’t think of the last time I actually read something for only pleasure. It’s always work… or work… related.” and he shook his head and said to himself “Now that is just tragic.”

Without thinking, Lissi shook her head. “Not tragic. You have passion for your work and your patients. And your hobby, the medical project. Tell me about it. You speak like you aren’t proud of it. Like it’s some small thing you ‘putter’ with but feel it’s not worth sharing.” She reached out a hand and smiled as she touched his. “Will you share it with me?”

He smiled and put his hand on hers and shook his head. “While I appreciate your interest, I simply do not wish to discuss it.” and he patted her hand and leaned back and began eating. “Not when I have such sparkling company to engage with.” and he laughed.

Lissi smiled and nodded. “As you wish.” She winked, “For now…” She laughed and blushed at his compliment. “Well you like medicine. Do you have anything in particular you like? Pediatrics, or viruses, or anything? I feel like I’m gonna tell you all four stats about me before I get to delve into you.” She leaned over and smiled. “Maybe a dark hobby of eating decadent desserts when no one is looking?” She was teasing him as her eyebrows bounced.

Siegfried laughed and said “No, no such things. As for medicine… my MD is in virology, but my PhD is Pathology. I have always been fascinated more by the work of discovering the ‘why’ someone is sick when scans and tests and all of our technology cant piece it together. I find it more challenging than setting a broken bone. And I am not particularly fond of desserts unless they are shared.” and he chuckled as he slid his empty plate aside.

Lissi smiled. “I love shared desserts as well.” She thought about what he said about medicine. “You say you like discovering why someone is sick. Do you mean where they got the virus from? Or do you mean what happened in their body to make them susceptible to catch it when it invaded them? I admit when I wanted to go medical, I was fascinated by viruses. Seeing them all blow up under a microscope.” She laughed. “Stupid huh? I actually admired how tiny they were and how landing on the right spot on or in a person, they could cause so much trouble.”

“Viruses are quite fascinating. And no, not stupid at all. They are the only life forms we know of that can live under the harshest conditions imaginable and still thrive. Admiration, and a strong respect for their potential, is essential.” he said and then took a drink.

Abel, CMO

“I admire them. And thank you for nothing thinking it’s stupid. I used to use the holo programs at the Academy to study. I would take the virus we were studying… or ailment or whatever. And I would go blow it up on the holo like it was a million times bigger than life. I have watched the flu infiltrate a lung.” She laughed. “It was fascinating. I sometimes wish I’d had the genes to be a Doctor.”

He gave her a confused look and then said “But… but you are a doctor. I mean…” and he looked around the entire room and gestured. “This. All of this is the body you work on. You keep it clean, free of disease and viruses, provide advice and maintenance to ensure all of its systems are working properly and together in harmony… you fix it if it breaks. You train in specialized procedures and use of specialized equipment and tools. So… you are a doctor. Just not with biology.”

She leaned back in her chair and listened to him. ” I guess I never thought of it that way.” She laughed. “I can’t imagine running the microscope holo program on a ship system and see how it works. It’s funny, you know. I went from using the holodeck because I was too small to see the big picture. Not, here, in the ship, I’m the microscopic entity inside the creature I care for.” She smiled.

“Not all viruses are bad…” he said simply.

Lissi laughed. Her eyes shining brighter in the lights of the mess. “So I’m a ‘good virus’ that the ship caught.” Shaking her head she finished her dinner. “Guess I never thought that way about it. But yes… that’s what we all are. I mean, certain exclusions would apply.

“Exclusions always apply… Doctor.” and he chuckled and raised his glass to her, smiling.

She laughed and raised her glass with an over exaggerated nod, “Why, thank you, Doctor…” she touched his glass with her own and took a sip. “So, enough about me. I told you I tend to ramble. So which dessert shall we share?” She smiled a bit brighter.

He chuckled and said “I saw cherry cobbler when I got our dinner. Shall we try that?” he suggested.
