Pongo nodded, “I think I mis-spoke, not that emotions are wrong, but in most cases, and causalities the vulcan mindset sees the lack of control of the emotions of others as an incorrect perspective point. Emotions run deep in your people, and were removed at a time that it was needed to stop what was going to be a catostrophic decline in control, and civility in your people.” Pongo said with a smile, “I even agree with it for the most part, if I do not actively apply the principals in my own life. Doctor Tauren I think we will get along well, you are not nearly as outwardly and unintentionally condescending, at least in interaction, as many of your compatriots have been.” Pongo replied.

Tauren arched an eyebrow at the observation. “It is a logical extension of observation. Positive reinforcement is more effective in the long run than negative reinforcement, and increases the utility of negative reinforcement when urgency is paramount. I believe there is a human expression that expresses that insect-derived sugar secretions are more effective than spoiled wine, if one wishes to become an entomologist. If I were to insist something simply is illogical, and that were my response to all actions whether mundane or emergent, then that insistence would be calculated into any insistence I might make as a given. I have personally witnessed behaviors change because I agreed with them as logical on one occasion. As I mentioned, I had to serve as a psychiatrist at times on my previous assignment.”

He took a final sip of his beverage. “Which is a longwinded way to say that I will take your statement as the compliment it was intended as. It may help you in dealing with other Vulcans, however, to remember that when we imagine other people in our heads, it is very difficult for us to incorporate emotion into a psyche without eliminating logic. Therefore other people, to us, we expect at a base level to either be as logical as us, or to be a total barbarian. At an intellectual level, we know this is not the case, that even a Klingon or Ferrengi is capable of logic, and even a Vulcan may occasionally under extreme circumstances give an emotional snap. But few Vulcans are raised amongst aliens in an alien culture, and we cannot easily model an emotional psyche internally. Those few exceptions, they make highly effective ambassadors, if they can get past the wrongness they engender in other Vulcans. The path I am now attempting to follow is not an easy one, but I hope it will ultimately lead to positive results.”

Pongo nodded towards the Vulcan doctor, “It is easier the path you choose, then one that is chosen for you. Do you intend to be an Ambassador someday?” Pongo understood a little, he was not an Ambassador, well not officially, but as the only member of his people in Starfleet he was often seen as the model of expected behavior of the others from his planet. It was hard to explain, that of the five people of New Ashlar, the Tuan were but one, and the easiest to get along with. The Boon, and Lari would be the next easiest, then the Rambe, and the Zan, well few people get along with the Zan, they were aggressive, and mean spirited most of the time. As well as highly competitive and territorial. That was not a matter of the moment though. As he waited for a response from Doctor Tauren, he wiggled in his seat unconsciously. After they finished talking Pongo figured he would get the Doctors Eval out of the way as well. It would just be smart to do.
