Solark spoke up. “I was able to access the general intel files and discovered that the governor and the farmers have been having major disputes only in the last two years. There are three different groups on the farmers side. Before that, the groups were united under a man named Prox. He was usually able to settle issues with the governor amicably. He died of an accident just two years ago, before the major disputes occurred. Now the three groups have been having disagreements. One group chose to compromise so that the dispute regarding the price of the grain can be settled amicably. Another group wants to stand by protectionist policies to safeguard the livelihood of the farmers. A third group wishes to deal with traders themselves, bypassing the governor.”

O’Connor nodded at the COO. “I have a sneaky feeling you will be very helpful to have around. Thank you for that info Chief.”

Kate was always a half-full kinda glass girl so when things were not going the way they should she turned to three options that made the Universe go round. “Love, wealth, and revenge,” Kate said taping a sip of her coffee. “My gut says it is one of the three.”

“I have a feeling you might be right O’Neil, which is why I’m concerned this might go stupid… and why I want your people ready.” Garrett said after pursing his lips.

“Basing that again on the Galaxy time movie network,” Paris let out a laugh. Although Kate thought she was using the scientific method it was not one Paris would sign off on with her approval.

“Go ahead and make fun of Galaxy time movies but these things were as old as life in the galaxy. Since the first amoeba crawled out of the water and looked to his left he either saw a beautiful amoeba with long eyelashes, a rival amoeba, and the desire to either win the girly amoeba with fancy bobbles or screw over his rival amoeba with fancy bobbles. People are generally lazy. They only do things for those reasons. We just need to figure out which one and definitely avoid the Dip cor. You think I talk,” she rolled her eyes. “I was on a mission once with some Dip Cor dude name Ian Bordeaux. I think he lulled them into compliance with the white noise of discussion,” Kate made the universal sign for someone chatty with a hand puppet. Getting back to the point at hand, Kate posed another question.

“Solark you said this Pox and the governor always settled the disputes amicably. What was their connection? People just don’t agree unless there is a reason to and was the accidental death deemed suspicious in any way?”

Kate O’Neill COS

“Also,” Paris raised her finger, “how is the health of the crops. Have there been any growing problems with the grain? Four years ago on Beltrallan V, a story came out about someone tampering with the genetics of the crop to drive up cost and drive down supply. It would have worked because crops do get diseases all the time but someone leaked what was going on.”

Paris Black, Science

“According to the latest available information,” replied Solark, “The strategy of Prox was to negotiate compromise: the same strategy as the first group of farmers. I said that the disputes were settled amicably. That did not mean that the negotiation process was always smooth. Prox was reputed to be a master negotiator and a skilled statistician. He always managed to keep the prices stable despite increasing output to keep up with the increasing demand.”

“As to the question of genetic manipulation, Prox was extremely proud of the quality of organic Tammoron grain. This was how he was able to keep the quality and prices stable,” continued Solark. “Not all the farmers were happy with his principles. Some wanted to make more wealth, as did the governor. However, Pox was able to keep the peace between the various factions.”

“And what do we know of the individual leadership of the three groups?” Abel said. “Because I doubt we will come to a palatable resolution unless we can get the three labor groups to present a unified list of grievances. From what you have said, Commander Solark, the three groups have conflicting goals. If the three groups are not unified, we won’t be able to negotiate without alienating one or more of them.”

OOC: Fixing a split. ~ Kate

“You got any other details in that area Solark?” O’Connor asked of the COO.

O’Connor, CO

Solark presented some profile pictures on the general display. “Prox was succeeded by his daughter Diana, who leads the first group. The second group is led by a farmer named Sima, who wants the governor to protect the livelihood of the farmers by keeping a constant supply rather than regulating supply to keep prices stable. The third is led by a very young farmer named Kino. His ideas are considered the most radical, eliminating the governor’s role in the sale of the grain. Many consider his faction to be the weakest because it does not have the support of the smaller farms. He only has the support of Tracer, the owner of the largest farm on Tammoron. Tracer has been buying up smaller farms and does have a considerable influence on the market of Tammoron grain. However, he is not popular as he is considered a predator, preying on smaller farms.”

Solark switched to a map of the planet. “The farms are only found in this region of the planet as the conditions are the most ideal for grain cultivation. Closer to the equator is the Tammoron city, the capital of the planet. For some reason, there seems to be a device in operation that prevents the transporter from working in the region of the farms. That is why the governor is still unable to use force to quell the farmers’ strike.

Solark

Lissi had been listening to the others. But as a lull came up, she glanced back to the Captain. “You said shipments were going missing. What do you mean by that? Are farmers not delivering? But receivers are saying the shipments were sent? Or is it the other way around? Are farmers saying shipments were sent, but receivers are claiming they aren’t getting them? That could be out biggest tell. Who’s blaming who for the missing shipments. Figuring that out may be the best bet for settling things.” She glanced around the table suddenly aware her thinking was a far different track than anyone else’s. Shrugging, she settled back into her chair. “Just figured whoever is responsible could be brought to light. Then negotiations would go easier rather than a bunch of blame slinging.”

She wasn’t a negotiator. But in worrying about her own House Claiming that was swiftly approaching, she had found herself looking at nearly everything from a different view than those around her.

OOC: Sorry for the lack of posting … I don’t remember the GM said anything about missing grain, but I will work that in … :)

((Sorry,delayed not missing… My apologies))

Garrett smiled at the Engineering Chief. “Damn good point, Commander. I think that’s an approach I hadn’t really focused too much thought on but I am certain, now the you mention it, that we should.”

Turning to the COO, O’Connor asked. “Any specific details along that train of thought Commander Solark?”

O’Connor, CO

Solark looked at the data before answering, “There is no concrete evidence that there were missing shipments. This accusation was levelled at the governor, saying that he did it to keep the prices of grain high.”

Morganna listened carefully to the information and took several minutes to process it before she spoke “Are we thinking that the farmers may be completely cutting out the middle man to increase their profits?” She looked around the table “How much are the distributors taking before the farmers get theirs? And what about this Tracer, he seems to be willing to do anything to get the smaller farms and how do the farmers he’s bought up feel about it?”

CNS

“Diana and Sima do not have good things to say about Tracer. However, he is getting more and more influential. Whilst he is affecting the smaller farmers, his acquisition is considered legal and the smaller farms do not have any legal way to stop him from buying the farms,” said Solark. “I must admit that the situation seems strange to me. There must be something missing in the data I have. Perhaps, we need to discover the missing data regarding Tracer to understand the situation better.”

Solark

“The best way is to get feet on the ground. Talk to the locals,” Kate said. “News reports and data points are all good but we all know what is reported and what actually happens are two entirely different things. Sir,” Kate looked at the CO, “can I suggest Morgana and I go on a little meet and greet with the locals. There is always some festival going on in small agricultural communities. It might give us more of a sense to know what is happening at the source and then compare it with official versions.”

Kate O’Neill COS

((Posted fixing “missing” into “delayed”… My apologies))

Lissi nodded. “Might be good to talk to both sides. Find out where the shipping glitches are happening. Seeing who is holding up what, and where, will go a long way on deciding who gets asked what.” She looked Kate’s idea of taking to the folks and not relying just on reports.

Mason nodded and looked around the table. “Does anyone have any more questions before we arrive at Tammoron?”

Black, XO

The Vulcan shook his head intentionally, trying to remember the human body gesture for saying no.

Solark

Looking around the table, Mason looked at the CO. “In that case I recommend we dismiss the meeting and prepare our departments for our imminent arrival, Captain.”

Cmdr Black, XO

“Agreed…” O’Connor said, nodding then looking around to his assembled officers. “… let’s be about it. Dismissed.”

Lissi nodded and headed off to Engineering to make sure the ship and her systems would work at max performance when called upon. “Aye, aye, Captain…”

Morganna walked out of the ready room and headed to her office to prepare for their arrival. She wasn’t certain if Kate’s idea was going to fly or not, she prepared for it anyway.

“Exec…” Garrett said, motioning to the XO and Security Chief. “… can you two hang back just a minute? I wanted to discuss something real quick. Three minutes, tops. You two have work to do.” He smiled, nodding to the COS to grab the chair opposite the XO. Once the room cleared, Garrett went straight to the point.

“Exec… I like Commander O’Neil’s more…” He smirked slightly. “… clandestine approach. I would like you two to come up with a game plan for making it work. We don’t need some damned Colonial dust up… especially with only one ship with a single Security Department to address it.” He looked to O’Neil and smiled. “Nothing against your people Kate, you all are top flight… but your department is designed to protect this ship and her crew. If we were gonna be ass kickin’ around some damn backwater colony, I’d feel a lot better having the back up of a Company or two of Marines. SFMC Troopers in Power Armor make a hell-of-a bigger ‘don’t frack with us’ statement than Yellow Shirts with CPRs.” He paused, before adding. “Which is why, if we can, I want to implement your plan. Insider knowledge is incredibly helpful, especially with the BS details we have coming into what could easily become a s***storm. I know you all can knock heads with the best of Marines… I’ve read your damn training regiment…” He chuckled, a quick… hushed “…lunatics…” escaping him, his smile a bit bigger. “… but lets try not to let the proverbial excrement make physical contact with the electrically-powered oscillating air current distribution device. Clear?” For a Fleet Captain, O’Connor had a warm demeanor and bright smile.
