It was halfway through the night shift when there was an urgent communique coming in to the bridge. The Captain was asleep in his quarters and the XO............

Storyteller

Mwezi had a tendency of pulling double shifts. The regular shift where he acted as security for the Captain, and the night shift where he did his regular job - sitting at the weapons console as Weapons Officer. So here he was. He glanced up at the sound of an incoming communique and checked to see whether he was the highest ranking Officer on the bridge or not.

• Mwezi, WO

You are the highest ranking officer on the bridge.

Mwezi shrugged to himself, then stepped over to sit on the captain’s chair and receive the call.

“Lt. Mwezi of the Chernov here. What do you need?”

• Mwezi, WO

The person on the other end let out a heavy breath. [O]What do I need? Is that anyway to answer the con Lieutenant? I sure hope you can relay messages better than you can answer the com. [O]

[O]”Never mind. This is Admiral Jeff Thomas and I have a mission for you all. Since your ship did a great job handling the Galdor people and your ship is closer to the objective, I need you to act as first contact to the planet Ordel near the Orion boarder. The person you will need to contact is Govenor Delain. Proceed at once Lieutenant. Admiral Thomas out.[O]

Mwezi nodded slightly to himself. “Helm, plot a course.”

He tapped the inter-ship comm, and set a message to the Captain to receive when he awoke. “Mwezi to Captain. We’ve been given an assignment to go to Ordel. We’re on the way, but it’s probably a good idea for you to be up here when we arrive.”

Chris was laying down on the couch watching the Hellraiser collection for the 12th time in two weeks when the message from Mwezi came in. He sent one back to him. [O]Lt. Mwezi. Thank you for this and I see that the ship has changed course. Great job. I am indisposed for another two weeks unless of an emergency. Please send everything to Commander Sideman. He is the Acting Captain and Commander Grey is the acting XO. Please CC me on all messages though so that I can stay informed and act if need be. Keep up the great work and get some rest![O]

Mwezi leaned back and rested for a few moments, readying himself before leaning forward and sending the same message to the XO. [O]Mwezi to Commander Sideman. We’ve been given an assignment to go to Ordel, I wasn’t told precisely why, but it seemed important. Since Captain Taggart is indisposed, it’s probably a good idea for you to be up here when we arrive. Weapon’s Officer out.[C]

After reviewing the message from Mwezi Sideman went to the bridge. As he left the turbolift he said, “Report.”

Lt. Commander Sideman, XO

“Not much more to say than what was in the message. It’s a first contact mission on a planet called Ordel. We’ve been told to contact an individual named Govenor Delain. That’s all the information I was given,” Mwezi explained as he stood up and stepped away from the Center Chair. He stretched slightly, his jaw cracking wide open as he yawned. “Need anything else?”

“No, but I would like you to take your station please.” Looking over at the helmsman he asked, “How long before we reach Ordel?”

The Commander was hoping to have a little time so he could get himself ready for the mission; after all this was his first time in command of a starship. The Captain had expressed his concerns already that maybe the commander need to be a bit more seasoned before this occurred so he did not want to let the CO down.

Mwezi glanced over at the NE at Helm. “How long, Peters?”

The young man glanced over the charts. “About a week and a half, sirs.”

Mwezi looked back at Sideman. “You might as well head back to bed. Get some sleep and let me finish the Night shift,” he commented with a small smile.

“What’s our current speed Helsman” he asked.

“Warp 5.5, sir. It’s a bit faster than our regular cruising speed, so I’ll have to slow down soon. The Orion border is pretty far away,” NE Peters replied, glancing back at Mwezi, who nodded in approval.

There was an incoming message on the PaDD that gave them their orders.

===MISSION BREIF FOR USS CHERNOV===

The Chernov will make it’s way to planet Ordel to meet with Govenor Delain. Governor Delain will be in the capital city of Gongdu and will have an entourage waiting to escort the Captain and whomever he sees fit to come along. No weapons will be allowed and the Ordelians will not have any weapons either. The Captain and or his delegate are there to negotiate a first contact treaty. You are to secure as much resources as you can with mining rights and the like as well as establish a good report and an embassy. Starfleet will send the new Ambassador once a favorable contract has been signed. The planet is rich in Bio-mimetic gel: A volatile substance with medical applications. It is also highly sought after for use in illegal activities, such as genetic experimentation and biological weapons development. As such, its use is strictly regulated by the United Federation of Planets, and sale of the substance is prohibited.

There will be other buyers/First Contact personnel from various other planets and worlds from different systems. If you see any new species, then as a secondary mission, perform a First Contact on them as well. It is unknown what other species are going to be there but expect the Orions and Klingons. It is also unknown as to how the Ordelians contacted us as no one has ever contacted their species or planet before. Be careful.

Cruising at warp to Ordel would be smooth, demanding little attention until the ship ground to a halt. NE Peters rose from his seat at the helm, approached a security officer and held out his hand. Without making eye contact, NE Vulk handed over his phaser. Peters pressed a button, turning the setting to kill. He raised the weapon and ended his life. Vulk picked up and holstered his weapon.

Sideman seeing the events yelled, “What the hell is going on?”

Pressing a button on the Captain’s chair he commanded, “Security to the bridge on the double.”

Looking over at the security officer Commander Sideman continued, “You are under arrest..hand over your weapon.”

Sideman moved over to NE Vulk and continued, “Slowly, give me your phaser.”

Vulk looked blankly at Sideman. “What happened sir?”
