Kane barked at the nurses and medical staff. “Get that gurney ready. Bell! Check that vacuum dressing and make sure it doesn’t get jostled while we take His Higness to his quarters. Conrad, I swear to all the gods above if you so much as think about giving him a glass of water I will wear your guts for a hat. He just had abdominal surgery. Think, man! And I don’t care that he out ranks you. He can order all he wants…” and he looked at Taggart and grinned wickedly, “… Right now he’s just a poor widdle baby all hurt and mending.” and he made crying motions at his eyes before laughing. “Oh, Taggart… remind me never to get hurt enough you have to be my attending. Just let me die.” His voice was his typical sarcastic harshness, but another doctor would recognize there was a high level of professional care in what he said… just not how he said it.

Chris tried not to laugh but on a serious note he hated how this undermined his authority some in the presence of junior officers and enlisted. But he will have rum to help him out after the good DOCTOR and his crew left him alone. He just looked up at Kane. “You good sir. Can go ahead and eat a satchel full of Richards.”

Kane looked at him and said “I see the sedatives are still in effect. Weak comeback like that… well, it’s either the sedatives or your intellect. Both bring on sleepiness and yawning after all.” and he gave the man a gentle nudge on the ribs… just enough to have him try not to laugh and clench the abdominal muscles, knowing it would hurt.

“Weak maybe but still better than your bedside manner.” He took the hint from Kane and tried to keep quiet. “Hey. Thanks.”

Kane looked down at him and uncharacteristically grinned. Shaking his head, he said “Shut the hell up, Taggart.” but he put a hand on his shoulder as he walked away. “Conrad!! What the %@#$& are you doing?! Have you ever moved a gurney, or is this your first day alive? Move. H’tad! Barshink! Please assist Mr. Conrad in trying to deliver our patient in as few pieces as possible! Bell! Get ready for patient transfer and then we’ll roll his old butt to his quarters!”

When they finally managed to get Taggart to his room, Bridie was there. She had managed to rearrange the furniture to make room for the gurney to get to his room. His bed had been set up so he could sit up at the slightest incline possible to be comfortable but not go against the outline Kane had given on his recovery.

As they came in, she got up from the couch where she had obviously been dozing and wiped her eyes. “Hi guys… it’s all ready for you.” She nodded and pointed in the direction of the bedroom. She then leaned against the wall and crossed her arms, stifling a yawn as they came in.

“Let’s get him in bed. Taggart, I’m coming in here twice a day to check your bag and your wounds. But if you feel anything outside the norm, you call. And dont think you know best. You dont. You got stabbed by a sword, so you are not qualified to make decisions on your own health.” Kane said as the gurney made it’s way to the side of the bed. The medical staff slowly and carefully moved him over and got him settled.
