She turned her head as he went back to his office. She was sad she couldn’t see him. She waited till the nurse walked off and slowly stood up. Cradling her left arm in her right, the weight of the machine tugging just enough on her wrist that hanging it at her side, hurt. She made sure she wasn’t being watched, and walked over to his office door. Leaning on the frame for a moment, just watching him, she finally spoke up after a couple heart beats. “You didn’t eat… did you, Chief?” Her voice was gentle, low and full of concern.
Bridie
CEKane looked at her for a long moment and then said “Get. Back. In. Bed.” and pressed the door control so it slid shut directly in front of her.
Kane, CMO
She had to back up or get caught in the door. “Stubborn man,” she murmured.
She looked around and went to nurse Bell. “Ma’am… I know I have to wear this another hour or so. But I can move if I keep it stable like this, right?” She had a different look on her face. This time the question was a serious one, not one looking to cause issues.
Bridie
CEBell looked at her and then turned and opened a drawer. She pulled out a slung and put it on the Engineer. “Do NOT leave Sickbay. And if that office door opens, your tail is in that bed. Got it?”
NE Bell
She touched Bell’s arm as the sling was adjusted and settled. “I want to go get him something to eat. He hasn’t since coming back, has he? I was there, Ma’am… we haven’t eaten since lunch.” A nervous glance back over her shoulder and she took a breath. Looking at Bell, she shook her head. “If I don’t get any pain meds or sleeping pills, I don’t care. Let me get him some dinner. Please.”
Bridie
CEBell shook her head. “He’s not much of an eater in situations like this. Leave him be. You worry about letting that thing do its work. Now sit.”
NE Bell
She frowned and moved back to the bed. Waiting till Bell had walked away again, she turned to sit the other way on the bed and tapped the comm on the wall. She called down to engineering for one of her night workers, NE Brady, to bring her two trays of fruit, soup and bread to medical. She then turned around again and watched Bell and the others move about the room with efficiency and determination.

An hour later, Bridie was stretched out, on the verge of dozing off, when the food arrived. “Good,” she said and took the trays and set them on her biobed. After making the NE leave she took one of the trays to Kane. His door was closed. She took a moment to decide then knocked. Her heart was racing like a Tribble about to split.
Bridie
CEThe door opened and Kane was in the doorway. “What?” was all he said and he glared at the tray.
Kane, CMO
She lifted her chin slightly. “If roles were reversed, you’d tell me I needed to eat because lack of sleep, stress and lack of food wouldn’t do me or anyone else any good.” She held the tray to him with a blank expression, or as close to one as she could get. “Take it… eat it when you want. Though I recommend sooner rather than later.”
CE
Kane looked at the display on the device on her wrist, took the tray, and said “You’re done. Go see Bell.” and he walked over and tossed the tray into the recycler before moving to Taggart.
He looked at the monitors and then at the surgical site. Nodding he pulled the hypo out and dialed in another med and pressed it to Captain’s neck. A soft hiss, and Kane dropped the hypo back in his pocket.
“Taggart. Wake up. Look at me.” he said as he leaned over the man’s face and watched his eyes move under his closed lids.
Kane, CMO
Birdie frowned. “Guess that means I don’t have to eat, either,” she murmured under her breath as he walked away to the Captain.
She looked for Bell and smiled, but it didn’t quite meet her eyes. “Can I please have this off now and get some sleeping aid? Chief said I could.” Then she added, “Preferably not a concussion… to aid my sleep, I mean.” Her glare was over the woman’s shoulder the the CMO.
Bridie
CEBell say her down and removed the device, and then handed her three pink pills. “Here you go. One per night only.” and she glanced at Kane Kane then back. “I told you he wasn’t an eater. Maybe listen next time, hmm?”
Bridie smiled. “Thank you, I promise. Only one per night.” She glanced at Kane talking to Taggart on the other side of the bay. “As to learning my lesson,” she let the edges of her lips come up in a smile before looking back at the nurse, “probably not.” She shrugged and headed over to the guys.
Chris opened his eyes then closed them again. “Wh....what happened? Where am I?” He tried to say.
Captain Chris Taggart CO
“Open your eyes, Taggart. You’re on the Chernov… and with three fewer holes than you arrived with. You’re welcome. Now open your eyes. Look at me.” Kane said in a voice that seemed angry and tired simultaneously.
Kane, CMO
Chris opened his eyes. “Thank you.” How is everyone else?”
Captain Chris Taggart CO
Kane shown a light in his eyes and felt around the wound. “Alive. Despite your best efforts. And you have about three feet of new intestine and colostomy bag for the next two weeks while your guts come back online. Oh, and we used bourbon instead of blood to bring you back from the brink. Figured might as well save you a step.” and he looked up at the monitors.
“Your abdominal muscles are gonna be sore as hell for few days. That’s one of the side effects of being stabbed with a sword. And you get to work from your quarters the next week. No sitting in a chair. You get to stand or lay flat on your back. I was gonna make it two weeks, but I dont want to hear you complain that long.” and then he stood back and glared at Taggart. “And when you are recovered, remind me to punch you in the mouth.”
Kane, CMO
“Very well. I’ll do as you say. I just want to lie down anyway. … wait? What? Why punch me in the mouth?”
Captain Chris Taggart CO
“Because you let yourself get stabbed with a sword, you idiot.” and he left it at that. He tapped a few commands into the computer and then said “Everyone made it back, no major injuries… just bumps, bruises, and scrapes. CE has… had… a hairline fracture in her wrist. That’s taken care of. Haven’t seen Mwezi, but I locked the damn doors while I worked on you because I didn’t want him breathing down my neck.” As he finished, he said “You want the comms to let the crew know I didnt finish what that jackass on the planet started?” and he handed him a communicator. “Keep it short.”
Kane, CMO
NE Bell
“Oh. Well he was a lot better than me with a sword.” He grabbed communicator. [O] Captain to Bridge. Commander Sideman will be in charge for the next three weeks and Commander Grey will be his XO. Unless the ship is getting ready to explode, don’t bother me while I recover. [O] He handed back the comm and winced. “There. How’s Bridie? Did she suffer because I couldn’t wield a sword proper? I miss seeing her beautiful face.”
Lord Taggart CO Fellowship of the Warp
She stopped out of sight of the Captain but within sight of Kane. Something told her coming up his blind side was a mistake she’d only make once. And not by choice. She looked at Kane when he looked up and gave a nod of respect and thanks. Mouthing the words is he ok? to him while chucking her chin at the CO.
Bridie
CEKane sighed heavily and looked at Taggart. “Maybe if you were thinking less about faces and more about swords, you wouldn’t be here right now.” and he turned and looked at Bridie. He then simply gestured at Taggart and made an exasperated face and walked off.
Kane, CMO
“Maybe. I don’t know.”
She stepped towards Kane’s path so her hand would reach his arm as he passed. Just the barest of touches, but she added in a low whisper, “Thank you…” She decided to let him figure out what she was thanking him about.
Bridie stepped up beside Taggart and smiled. “I would stab you again but the Doc needs sleep.” She said with a soft smile, but her eyes were full of worry and she looked exhausted. “I’m glad you are all right, Chris.”
Bridie
Ce“Again? Did you do it before?” He tried to smile but winced. “And I’m ok, I am glad that you are. As I was lying there dying, I could only think about whether or not you made it out. Nothing else mattered and I tried to stay alive long enough to find out one way or another. Sorry I failed you and everyone else?”
Captain Chris Taggart CO
Bri smiled at him. “I’m fine. And I’m glad you are as well. You need to rest. And I need a shower.” She laughed and brushed hair from his face. “Now, listen to the Doc and do as you’re told. I’ll check on you in the morning. All right?” She smiled down at him and shook her head. “Next time, take security with you… not an engineer.” She laughed softly but it wasn’t quite funny.
Bridie
CE“Well do. Do I even get a goodnight and a goodbye kiss from you dear?”
Captain Chris Taggart CO
“I’ll give you your kiss when we watch movies when you are feeling better.” She blushed a moment and touched his cheek. “Now sleep. Cause I know you, you aren’t gonna behave once you are in your quarters.” She laughed and ran her hand down his arm. “Get some sleep.” She smiled and turned to head out.
Moving to Kane’s office, she saw his door open and took a moment to watch him in silence before she moved into the doorway far enough that if he closed it, she’d be inside this time. “Doc?” she spoke up, but it was polite… bordering on professional.
Bridie
CEKane was looking at a PaDD on his desk and didnt look up as she spoke. “Not a Doc. PA. What do you want?” he asked flatly.
Kane, CMO
She nodded. “My apologies, Lieutenant. I just wanted to say thank you for saving the Captain. I’ll make sure, next time, he has security with him and not just an engineer.” She smiled slightly but it didn’t reach her eyes. “I just wanted to thank you. Oh, and for this,” she held up her mended wrist. “I hope you get something to eat, soon. I would hate to be labeled the woman who cost the ship the Medical Chief cause she failed to end the CO.” She smiled and nodded respectfully. “Thanks again. I’m sure lots on the ship will thank you as well.”
She turned to go, her eyes lingering on him a moment.
Bridie
CEKane kept reading, not looking up. Finally, not hearing the door, he looked up and said “What? Oh… ‘You’re so welcome for me doing my job.’ There. Better? Do you need something else?” he asked in a growl more than a question.
Kane, CMO
She smiled, this time it reached her eyes. “No, thank you. Hope you feel better enough to eat later. Good night.” She turned and left without looking back. Yeah, she would get under his skin, in a good way, if it was the only thing she accomplished on this tour.
