.Kane stepped out of his office and looked first at Taggart and then the CE. “Bell.” and henpiinyed to Bridie. “Sort that out. If she says shes fine, fine. Send her on her way. But if she wants so much as a damn aspirin, she gets examined.” and he walked over to Taggart and looked down.

“Well, Taggart. You’re alive…barely. Next time, I’ll just let you bleed out for being stupid. Now… nighty-night.” and he pressed the hypo in his hand to his neck and triggered the dose of sedative.

Bridie growled slightly under her breath and looked at Bell. “Fine…” She moved to the nearest biobed and hopped up on it. “Let’s get it over with so I can get out of your hair.” The words clipped and aimed more at Kane then Bell. Yes, she would earn the man’s respect. But again, it wasn’t going to start today. No matter how good looking he was despite the hell they had just been thru.

As Nurse Bell began the exam, Kane came over. Through the cascade of hair, his glowering eyes held fatigue. He looked as Bell ran the scanner over the wrist. “Stop.” he said and looked close at the display. “Hairline fracture, right… there.” and he pointed. Bell looked at him and said “Good catch.” He looked Bridie and said “Lay down and get comfortable. Osteo regenerator will mend that in an hour or two.” and he moved to a medical case and withdrew the device and began programming it.

Bridie tried to look at the tricorder. Despite it not facing her, or being moved a moment later, she tried non the less. “No, I…” She bit her lip and glared at him. She waited till he had come back and looked at her and she finally laid back, her arm at her side. The anger was almost tangible in her face as she looked at him.

Something told her she was being punished. But as he moved up to place the regenerator on her, something made her pause. The fatigue on his face was more evident. There was a look to him that made her take pause. His gruff demeanor and harsh ways was part of something else. In seeing him like this, and how he had been on the planet, made her want to brush the hair from his face and watch him sleep.

She shook herself mentally and it came out as a shiver. She jerked her hand slightly as he was moving towards it. “Sorry....” she whispered and went still. And as he placed the machine on her, she whispered with equal softness, “Thank you, Kane…”

He was so close she could see that his hair, dark as it was, had colored highlights that gave it depth and life like no other she had seen. Probably cause it’s long… that’s all Bri she chastised herself and looked at the ceiling. But try as she might, she couldn’t help wanting to constantly glance at him as he worked on her arm.

He ser regenerator on her wrist and watched as it began to work. After a minute he said “Dont move. 2 hours and you’ll be done.” and he looked at Nurse Bell and said “If she gives you any grief, drug her.” and he turned and walked over to Taggart. Bell looked at the CE and said softly “I know it sounded like he was trying to make a joke. Trust me… he wasn’t.”

Kane looked over Taggart’s scans and exhaled slowly. His blood pressure was just a hair below normal and the wound and bag implant were stable. When her wrist is done, we can wake him up. he thought to himself. He went into his office and activated the comms. [O] Kane to Sideman. Taggart will be awake in a few hours if you want to talk to him. Out. [C] and he slumped into his chair.

She turned her head as he went back to his office. She was sad she couldn’t see him. She waited till the nurse walked off and slowly stood up. Cradling her left arm in her right, the weight of the machine tugging just enough on her wrist that hanging it at her side, hurt. She made sure she wasn’t being watched, and walked over to his office door. Leaning on the frame for a moment, just watching him, she finally spoke up after a couple heart beats. “You didn’t eat… did you, Chief?” Her voice was gentle, low and full of concern.

Kane looked at her for a long moment and then said “Get. Back. In. Bed.” and pressed the door control so it slid shut directly in front of her.

She had to back up or get caught in the door. “Stubborn man,” she murmured.

She looked around and went to nurse Bell. “Ma’am… I know I have to wear this another hour or so. But I can move if I keep it stable like this, right?” She had a different look on her face. This time the question was a serious one, not one looking to cause issues.

Bell looked at her and then turned and opened a drawer. She pulled out a slung and put it on the Engineer. “Do NOT leave Sickbay. And if that office door opens, your tail is in that bed. Got it?”

NE Bell

She touched Bell’s arm as the sling was adjusted and settled. “I want to go get him something to eat. He hasn’t since coming back, has he? I was there, Ma’am… we haven’t eaten since lunch.” A nervous glance back over her shoulder and she took a breath. Looking at Bell, she shook her head. “If I don’t get any pain meds or sleeping pills, I don’t care. Let me get him some dinner. Please.”

CE

Bell shook her head. “He’s not much of an eater in situations like this. Leave him be. You worry about letting that thing do its work. Now sit.”

NE Bell

She frowned and moved back to the bed. Waiting till Bell had walked away again, she turned to sit the other way on the bed and tapped the comm on the wall. She called down to engineering for one of her night workers, NE Brady, to bring her two trays of fruit, soup and bread to medical. She then turned around again and watched Bell and the others move about the room with efficiency and determination.

An hour later, Bridie was stretched out, on the verge of dozing off, when the food arrived. “Good,” she said and took the trays and set them on her biobed. After making the NE leave she took one of the trays to Kane.

His door was closed. She took a moment to decide then knocked. Her heart was racing like a Tribble about to split.

CE

The door opened and Kane was in the doorway. “What?” was all he said and he glared at the tray.

Kane, CMO

She lifted her chin slightly. “If roles were reversed, you’d tell me I needed to eat because lack of sleep, stress and lack of food wouldn’t do me or anyone else any good.” She held the tray to him with a blank expression, or as close to one as she could get. “Take it… eat it when you want. Though I recommend sooner rather than later.”

CE

Kane looked at the display on the device on her wrist, took the tray, and said “You’re done. Go see Bell.” and he walked over and tossed the tray into the recycler before moving to Taggart.

He looked at the monitors and then at the surgical site. Nodding he pulled the hypo out and dialed in another med and pressed it to Captain’s neck. A soft hiss, and Kane dropped the hypo back in his pocket.

“Taggart. Wake up. Look at me.” he said as he leaned over the man’s face and watched his eyes move under his closed lids.

Kane, CMO

Birdie frowned. “Guess that means I don’t have to eat, either,” she murmured under her breath as he walked away to the Captain.

She looked for Bell and smiled, but it didn’t quite meet her eyes. “Can I please have this off now and get some sleeping aid? Chief said I could.” Then she added, “Preferably not a concussion… to aid my sleep, I mean.” Her glare was over the woman’s shoulder the the CMO.
