Deck ten to deck five had never seemed like a long trip… till now.
Brigette, the Chief Engineer, was helping a a young Ensign to sickbay with a plasma burn on his right hand and wrist because he had refused to spend twenty minutes putting on protective gear for a five minute conduit replacement.
She walked into medical and half shoved the Ensign towards the nearest bio bed and shook her head. His whining getting on her nerves. “Well, you should have worn the gear,” she murmured for the umpteenth time.
She leaned back on the wall and crossed her arms as she waited for the Doc to finish whatever he was doing. She was in no rush and while it was a burn, it wasn’t serious enough to warrant interrupting the man.
Lt JG Brigette Marshall
Chief EngineerCMO Kane came out of a curtained off area and saw the pair at biobed three. Looking at the injured man, then to the CE, then back to the injured man, all the tattooed man said was “Really? Again?”
Kane, CMO
Brigette remained silent as Ensign Jodders shook his head. “Look, it’s not that bad this time. I wouldn’t have come if the Chief hadn’t been worried.” He glanced at her like it was her fault. “Just had to change out a bracket. No point getting all gussied up. The burn will heal in a couple days.” He flexed his hand but the pinky didn’t quite respond all the way.
Brigette
CEKane knocked the man when he said “Mot Dat Bad… Mer mer mer.” and then reached out and smacked the back of the injured hand, eliciting a howl of pain from the man. “Oh, yeah… not bad at all. You’ll be right as rain… once I figure out if I have to cut your d%#n pinky finger off, you idiot. What is this, like four times you’ve been in here because you refuse to your job the right way? And then you being stupid means I have to now take time out of my day to try and fix you?! And I know you are just gonna go back and do it all over again in a few weeks, and all this time and effort is for nothing. So, yeah… tell me again Ensign how this isnt -” and his fingers mad air quotes, “- ‘as bad as last time’.”
Kane, CMO
The man howled and snapped his head to look at Brigette. “CHIEF! You gonna let him do this to me?” He was cradling the injured arm against his chest as if letting the Doc see it would make it worse.
Bridie stood up, grabbed his good arm and pulled it away to expose the injured one. “Yes, actually I am. And I’ll let him do it a second time if you don’t stick your arm out right now and let him heal it. Then you are confined to quarters on minimum rations for five days. And if i ever see you not in full gear next time, I will personally demote you to a Cadet once more and send you back to the Academy with recommendations not to send you to the Fleet again.” She was biting back her rage, but the underlying growl in her voice was evident.
She pinned his good wrist to the bio bed as he slowly moved his injured hand away from his chest towards the Doc with a murmured acceptance to his punishment.
Brigette
CEKane took the injured arm, not especially gently, and looked at it. “Your lucky it didn’t go past second degree. If it had, I’d be taking that pinky for my collection.” he growled at the Ensign. Looking up, he called to a nurse. “Dermal regenerator and 2 mg of Vicodin.” The nurse nodded, then stopped. “Um… 2, Mr. Kane? Are you sure? That will barely take the edg-“ “Oh, I’m aware. But I gave him topical anesthetic the last times, and he never learned.” and he turned and looked at Jodders. “So now he gets to learn what it feels like to have burned skin removed and forcibly grown back in its place.” and he leaned in. “Trust me. It’s worse than it sounds.”
Kane, CMO
Brigette watched as the man winced at the thought of what was about to happen. As the Doc began, the first time Jodders hollered out, Bridie shook her head. There had to be a better way. She hated to admit it, but even she had done the ‘no gear’ stunt before. The difference was, her reflexes were faster and she was perfectly aware of the danger, and avoided it at all cost.
As the Doc worked, she bit her lip and paced behind him, just out of the Doc’s periphery to keep from being annoying. “A sleeve… something up the arm…” she was murmuring to herself, not aware it was out loud. “But how… the burn sticks… to flesh. Need it to roll, but catch…” She was biting her lip again as she hummed her comments out.
Brigette
CE“Lieutenant, if you are going to keep babbling like a idiot, I’ll ask you to get out of my Sickbay.” Jodders cries had subsided, and the dermal regeneration was taking place. Kane looked over the device and then said “Lay back and shut up. You’ll be here for another two hours.”
Kane, CMO
She stopped and leaned on the wall. “I’m not leaving. If you are going to kill him,” she smiled almost maliciously, “I want to watch.”
After about five minutes, she spoke up once more. “Doc… Question… If I create a plasma resistant arm glove, will you help me see if it is worth a damn?” She quirked up the edge of her lip knowing that asking him if it worked wasn’t the way to go about speaking with him.
Bridie
CE
Kane stopped and looked at her. “Good luck with that. Plasma runs anywhere between eleven thousand and almost fifteen thousand degrees. And you think a glove will protect Dipstick McGee over here? Yeah… dont see that happening, but knock yourself out.”
