Mwezi stood outside the Captain’s Quarters. He’d checked to make sure Chris wasn’t on duty, and had sent a message a few hours ago suggesting the two of them got together for a drink, and perhaps some cards. Hopefully the Captain was amenable to that course of action.

OOC: I looked at this a few times before I realized that I was the Captain! I thought I was on another ship at first! Lol
IC: Chris did recieve the message and thought it odd that Mwezi wanted to drink and play cards but thought that he was just trying to be more human like and learning different things. Plus he was bored as well. When he was the CMO he could hang out with whomever he wanted to but now that he was the Captain, that was a whole other story.
He got the cards and poker chips together and some good ole straight rye whiskey from Kentucky. He checked the wall clock and thought that Mwezi should be here any time so he went to the door to open it and check down the hall. “Oh! Hey Mwezi! You’re right on time as usual. Come on in. I got everything at the table ready. On the little table is the food and liquor. Help yourself. I got food that I see you eat more than a couple times thinking that that was ok since maybe you liked it. I hope that’s cool?”

Mwezi stepped inside with a smile and lifted up a bottle made of a dark glass. The bottle made a sloshing sound when he moved it. “A favorite drink of mine from Galdor. Na’urthah. You probably do not want to know how it is made,” he explained, his words slightly slower and more accented than usual. “I suppose you are wondering why I wanted to have drinks and cards?”
“Ah. Yes. Yes I did. And I can’t wait to try it. Don’t worry, I’ve learned not to ask what something is, especially if I like it. Like Rocky Mountain Oysters are Haggis.”
He glanced around the Captain’s quarters and spotted the table with the food. He placed his bottle on the table and pulled a deck of oval-shaped cards from his pocket, depositing them on the table as well. “As you, I am sure, remember, I and those of my world are here on Starfleet ships in… an attempt to learn more about the Federation before my leaders commit to becoming a member. It is going well, but I have not really gotten a real feel for the more personal side of humanity and the Federation. I was hoping that I could spend some time, picking your brain as they say, and supposed that drinks, snacks, and cards would be a good staging ground for that conversation. And if not, we still have the drinks and cards.”

“Well that is smart of you. I’d be glad to help you on that. So ask away.”

“I would prefer to start on the game first,” Mwezi said with a smile.
They got the game set up and Mwezi looked at the cards and chips with a certain degree of confusion. “I am not sure, but I do not think I have seen this game before. How is it played?”

“Well its simple really, well in theory. Just like chess. It takes five minutes to learn and a lifetime to master. The chips act like currency. The white ones are worth 1. That’s why there is a lot of them. The blue is worth 5. The red 10 and black 25. But they could be worth anything the people playing deems them to be. But we will not use them right now until you get the hang of the game.”
“The cards are suited in 4 suits. Diamond, Hearts, Clubs and Spades. And arranged in lowest to highest from 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,J,Q,K,A. The suits have no hierarchy. But if you get a 10,J,Q,K,A all in the same suit, it is called a Straight Flush but more specifically a Royal Flush. That is the highest hand in poker you can have and the rarest and hardest to get. Statistically speaking you have a 1 in 600,000 chance of being dealt a Royal Flush.”
“In order they are, High card, pair, two pair, three of a kind, full house, four of a kind, straight and straight Flush.” He held up to show what they looked liked to Mwezi and then showed hands that can beat them.
“I know it’s a lot to take in at once but once we start playing everything will make sense. I’ll help you with your hands if you have questions on what to keep or get rid of. Don’t worry. I won’t use that to my advantage. I’m just teaching you a game so in return you can play me at anytime. And maybe even teach it to your people. So shall we get started?”

Mwezi listened with a focused expression, and tapped his wrist device partway through. After the explanation was finished, he nodded. “It seems fairly simple. We will try this.”
“Very well then.” And Chris started shuffling the cards.
He stepped over to the table, grabbing a plate and putting a handful of pretzels on it. “You paid attention to things that I ate often, assuming those were foods that I enjoyed… That is very considerate of you.”
Chris laughed a bit. “It’s just simple paying attention. Plus with how many times you have had my back, I think its the least I could do for you.”
Once he had his food, Mwezi grabbed the drink he had brought and poured some into two small shot-glass sized glasses, then took the whiskey and two larger glasses and carried these over to the game table. “This whiskey drink, I have seen it drunk with ice or without. Which do you prefer?”
“I will have ice. Thank you. And we call that “on the rocks.” For drinks like that with ice in it. The ice not only gives you a cool drink but when it melts it lessens the power or dilutes the whiskey making it weaker so you don’t get drunk as fast.”
Once he was ready, Mwezi sat down and waited for Chris to deal the cards.

Chris took the drink. “Thank you my friend.” And took a sip before dealing. Chris delt Mwezi and then himself one card at a time until the both had two cards.
“Ok. Now is the part that you look at your two cards and try to factor your odds of beating everyone at the table. If you’re smart you try to look at your cards last. The reason is that you watch the other players reactions to them seeing their cards. Some people are very good at hiding expressions and emotions while playing. This is called a poker face. Now it is called poker face or Vulcan face.”
“After you have gauged your card’s is when people start betting before the next card is revealed. But since we are playing without the chips then we will forgo that part. Betting is an art all of its own.”
Mwezi was delt an Ace of Spades and the Ace of Hearts (Face down of course) Chris was delt a 5 of clubs and 4 of hearts.
