SnipChris was thinking the same thing as the CE when he heard the chime. “Fireblast! I’m not ready!” He muttered. Looking around he realised it couldn’t be helped. With a reluctant sigh he yelled “Come! At your own risk!”
When Alex walked in he would see the captain sitting on top of his desk in only his underwear. His uniform was folded on his chair and he had no right arm or left leg on. They were on the desk while he tried to adjust them. He had only one bright blue eye and the other covered by an eyepatch. The eyepatch was black and in white small letters said, “Kiss the Captain”.
The office was neat and tidy and had puzzle box cubes all over the place, each under a dome of glass. Most had signatures on them. One was covered with brown wrapping paper and had a red wax seal on it to keep it closed. That one was on his desk. Behind him was a four foot tall glass tube with what looked like a half eaten human leg that also appeared to have been ripped off the body in a clear water type solution.
“Ummm. Hello Lieutenant. I was having problems with my cybernetic
Reid smiled. “I won’t. You’re clearly intelligent enough to go through medical school and practice. While the average medical school only has a 4-6% attrition rate, applicants to medical school tend to be more dedicated to their field than most other postgraduate students. Plus the obvious command skills that lead to becoming a starship Captain.” While Reid appreciated the Captain’s words, very few people associated the idea of him being smarter with being a good thing. It was usually what made him need to justify his existence.-Dr Alex Reid
“That is correct and thank you. Is there anything else you want to know?”
Captain Chris Taggart CO
“Only one. I’m not particularly good with a phaser. Well, I barely passed that exam. Is that something I’ll be needing often? On away missions and such?” Self-defense and phaser range were the only two classes Reid had ever come close to failing.
-Dr Alex Reid, CE
“Well yes you will. We all have skill sets that we’re good at, like I said earlier. Just before you arrived we all were wearing phasers in the ship trying to prevent a Romulan boarding party. So I have two options or rather three options for you. The first is that you don’t go on away missions. Which means you don’t do your part or pull your weight around here and that is what others might think even though I know better. There will be times that you will need to come with us.”
Reid flashed back to his Academy instructor telling him he’d never survive in space.
“The second is that you will spend one hour a day with the Chief Tactical Officer or another member of the security team in training on the phaser for a period of two months. Or I can personally train you do that others won’t know.”
“The third, which I think is the best idea, is to ask you what you’re good with? What weapon if any are you good at? It could be a lightsaber, whip, sword, etc… or something that you create entirely on your own, like a target locater thingy that goes over your eye and shoots what you look at. What do you say doctor?”
Captain Chris Taggart CO
After a moment of thought, Reid said “A top mounted sight. Essentially like a targeting reticule. It will indicate when I’m aiming correctly. I can take the basic programming out of targeting simulations. I can definitely do that.” He looked back at the Captain. “I guess I have my first project.”
-Dr Alex Reid, CE
Chris smiled. “See! You’re using your brains over your muscles. I will approve it and tell security that you will be requisitioning a phaser to keep in your locker and that you will be modifying it. You will also need a new holster to accommodate your altered phaser. Are you any good with leather working? If not, I know someone who is. “
Captain Chris Taggart CO
“I can’t say I’ve done much in the way of leathercraft, so a little help would be appreciated.” Reid was already designing in his head.
-Dr Alex Reid, CE
“Very well. Just give me the dimensions and a picture of it when you’re done and I’ll craft a custom holster for you. I grew up on a farm with hardly anything and we used everything that we could. I’ll be able to help you doctor Reid. It will give me something to focus my attention on other than war.”
Captain Chris Taggart CO
“It should be approximately 2.6 centimetres taller than a standard issue hand phaser when holstered.” Reid paused. “I’ll still send over an image when I’m done.”
-Dr Alex Reid, CE
“Excellent! Once done I’ll build. Do you have any other questions for me doctor?”
Captain Chris Taggart CO
“I think I’m ok Captain. It’s weird. I was a sub-dh before, kind of the assistant chief engineer. But this feels completely different.”
-Dr Alex Reid, CE
Chris nodded. “Oh I understand you on that one. When I became a CMO, I was on my old ship for a few more months before they transferred me to here. That way I wouldn’t be supervising my friends. Once here for a few years, they made me the XO. I was starting to get used to it when they up and made me the CO. I fully understand what you’re going through. Just remember you’re the boss and look at different leadership styles. Tailor them to you since everyone is different. It will take some time but well worth it. Remember again, you’re the boss. Just because it has always been done a certain way doesn’t mean that it should continue. You understand?”
Captain Chris Taggart CO
Reid nodded. “I’ll figure it out.” He stood up. “Thanks for the welcome… and the custom holster Captain.”
-Dr Alex Reid, CE
Chris stood when Reid did. “Welcome doctor. Welcome aboard.” He put his good hand out to shake.
