Pawl quietly took the lift to the bridge level.
Knowing this time the bridge was different, not feeling Kasarak’s presence any longer. Like a void. But there were newer officers that Pawl was not familiar with as the doors opened onto the bridge. As he stepped off the lift, his station was still being manned. He did not bother with taking his station at that moment. He moved closer to the captain to let him know who he was and his position, since he was not able to meet the man when he arrived. Excuse me, Captain, I wanted to quickly introduce myself to you. I am Pawl Batario, Chief Engineer. I am sorry I could not greet you properly while I was in sickbay under the doctor’s care and science officer’s care.” Pawl stopped to see whether the captain acknowledged me or not.

Captain Thaddus Charles Francis O’Neil had been reviewing the information scrolling across the command console when he heard the turbolift doors open behind him. He turned from the main viewscreen as the Chief Engineer approached, immediately recognizing the importance of the introduction. The captain gave Pawl his full attention rather than treating the interruption as an inconvenience.

“Lieutenant Batario,” O’Neil said, offering a measured nod. “There is no need to apologize. Your recovery came first, and I have been briefed on the circumstances that kept you in sickbay. I am simply glad to see you back on the bridge.”

The captain glanced briefly toward the engineering station before returning his attention to Pawl. “I took command while you were recovering, so I appreciate you taking the time to introduce yourself personally. Chief Engineer is a critical position aboard any starship, and particularly aboard the Chernov. I expect Engineering and the bridge to maintain a close working relationship.”

O’Neil’s expression remained composed, but there was a clear note of confidence in his voice. “When you’re ready, Lieutenant, I would like a full engineering status report and a briefing on any outstanding repairs, system irregularities, or concerns that developed while you were in sickbay. Nothing needs to be rushed on my account. I want accurate information, not hurried information.”

He gave another slight nod.

“Welcome back to duty, Lieutenant Batario. It is good to finally meet my Chief Engineer.”
