Chief Petty Officer Giles looked up from the engineering console, blinking as though emerging from another world. Streams of diagnostic data still cascaded across the display, and for a moment he seemed genuinely surprised that anyone had spoken to him. A sheepish grin spread across his face.

“Of course, Lieutenant,” he replied with an apologetic chuckle. “Sorry about that—I got completely buried in these diagnostics.” He glanced back toward the console, then nodded confidently. “I’ll keep everything running and have it ready for you when you get back. No need to worry.”

With that, Giles turned his attention back to the sensor data, his fingers already dancing across the controls as he continued tracing the mysterious readings while the First Officer and Chief Science Officer departed.
