As the doors to engineering zipped open, Will stepped through, taking his first glance around the Chernov’s engineering bays.

He always marvelled at how Starfleet engineers, and their ancestors, had developed the complex systems that were capable of making the dream of spaceflight a reality.

He looked around a bit more, to see if he could spot one of the engineering crew that weren’t ensconced in their duties.

OOC: I suggest we do this in a different time line to the main sim to maximise participation!

The doors to Main Engineering parted fully, allowing Commander Archer his first unobstructed view of the USS Chernov’s beating heart.

The engineering complex stretched across multiple levels beneath a canopy of glowing conduits, plasma manifolds, and diagnostic displays. The steady pulse of the warp core dominated the center of the compartment, its blue-white reaction chamber casting shifting patterns of light across the deck. Around it, engineers moved with practiced purpose between stations, carrying padds, monitoring system readouts, and conducting routine maintenance on equipment that most of the crew rarely saw but depended upon every day.

Unlike the bridge, where decisions were made, Engineering was a place of constant activity. Every console displayed a stream of data. Every junction box concealed systems that kept the starship alive.

Several crew members noticed the First Officer’s arrival. Curious glances were exchanged before attention returned to their duties.

A Chief Petty Officer stepped away from a nearby monitoring station and approached, offering a respectful nod.

“Commander Archer, sir. Welcome to Main Engineering.”

The senior noncommissioned officer glanced around the compartment before gesturing toward one of the engineering stations on the upper level.

“If you’re looking to meet some of the department personnel, that would be Ensign Shroni zh’Rohi over there, sir.”

The Andorian ensign was focused on a diagnostic display, antennae occasionally twitching as streams of system data scrolled across her console. Even from a distance it was apparent she was deeply engrossed in whatever analysis she was conducting.

“One of our newer officers, but a capable engineer,” the Chief Petty Officer added. “She’s been assisting with power systems diagnostics and EPS distribution monitoring.”

Nearby, another team worked inside an open access panel while two technicians reviewed power flow statistics from a secondary console. The warp core’s familiar hum echoed through the compartment as Engineering continued its endless cycle of maintenance, repairs, and optimization.

The Chief Petty Officer looked back toward Archer.

“If you’d like an introduction, sir, I’m certain Ensign zh’Rohi would be happy to brief you on what she’s working on.”

Around them, the crew continued their work uninterrupted, the heart of the Chernov beating steadily at the center of the compartment.

The young Ensign had just arrived on board but however started to work right away. With the power systems and EPS distribution being monitored and diagnosed, she was rather busy than needing to speak to anyone. She looked up from her work. “Commander.” She said without hesitation and went back to work. “I am very sorry commander. We’ve been a little swamped down here. I’ve been running a power system diagnostics as of late nothing new had came in. I have also been working on the EPS distribution still a in progress as well.” She added. However, nevertheless, she has decided to set things down for a little bit.

Will was about to open his mouth, but before he had chance to utter a single syllable, the Ensign continued.

“Again I do apologize commander. We’ve been swamped like I said. I was informed that the Chief engineer is currently in Sickbay so I stepped up temporarily until he is able to come back to duty. Hope that helps with things down here. I didn’t want to overstep or anything.” She said holding her hand out to shake the commanders hand.

Will shook her hand. “No, Ensign, you seem to doing a great job at holding the fort.” He continued with a smile. “How long have you been serving on the Chernov?” he continued, still trying to get familiar with the crew.

She looked at him. “Well sir if I maybe honest. This is my first assignment.” She replied back. “I also appreciate that. I’ve never really had to work with other engineers around me on a ship before. Completely new to me.” She added. “Ever since I’ve heard the Chief has been in medbay. I was pretty much the next closest ranking officer on board for engineering of course. No matter the problem is I’ve always been able to repair, fix, dismantle and remantle things. Always have when I was a very little girl.” She continued.

Chief Petty Officer Giles continued reviewing diagnostic data at his console as the conversation unfolded nearby.

Without looking away from the display, he spoke up.

“Sir, if I may, Ensign zh’Rohi has been doing an excellent job since coming aboard. She’s stepped up while Lieutenant Batario has been unavailable, kept on top of the diagnostics, and hasn’t been afraid to get her hands dirty.”

His fingers continued moving across the LCARS interface.

“She’s still learning the ropes, but she’s earned the respect of the engineering crew already. For a first assignment, I’d say she’s off to a very strong start.”

Giles returned his full attention to the diagnostics, allowing the conversation to continue.

Will turned to the Ensign. “Coming from a Senior NCO, that’s high praise, he said with a grin. “Whilst I hope the Chief Engineer will be back on his feet soon, it’s good to see engineering is in safe hands”.

She smiled at him. “Yes sir. I will make sure to keep this department in stable condition. And I do appt the praise Chief.” She replied
