Seven more Denobulans waited in the shuttlebay, seated in a loose semicircle near the far bulkhead. A pair of security officers stood nearby, keeping a respectful distance.

Triage had cleared them – all injuries were superficial. Cuts, bruises, nothing urgent.

Drel, the eldest, sat upright with his hands folded. He looked like someone used to being in charge, though he hadn’t said much. Next to him, Relda fussed quietly over a child’s torn jacket, dabbing at a scrape on the boy’s cheek with a strip of cloth. The boy – Tavin – winced but didn’t pull away.

Two younger men, Brix and Hollen, were engaged in a low, tense conversation. Their uniforms were scorched at the cuffs, but neither seemed hurt.

Off to the side, Merel and Jaxo kept to themselves. Merel watched the security detail. Jaxo stared at the floor, arms folded tightly across his chest.

None of them had asked when they could leave…

One of the security officers saw the little child and pulled a small rubber bouncy ball from his pocket, bounced it a few times in front of the child then silently rolled the child the little ball. Hopefully the child would take it and play with it. After he rolled the ball to the child he brought the group some water in case that they were thirsty. He looked to them and said “ don’t worry I’m sure the captain will talk with you soon”

Tavin looked up at Tommy, while Relda, his mother, nodded approvingly.

“Are you an alien?” he asked.

Relda quickly admonished him for his inappropriate question.

Chris came in at the tail end of the conversation and tried to hide his laughter and smile at an innocent child’s innocent question.

Turning to the Denobulans. “Hello. I’m Captain Christopher Taggart of the USS Chernov. You can call me Captain, Captain Taggart or even just Chris if you’d like. We stumbled upon your ship just in time and got you onto the USS Chernov. I hope the medical staff and everyone here has been treating you well. Do you need anything before we continue talking?”
