While Lovejoy went back to her quarters by orders of the executive officer, she sat in her room questioning herself as she was relieved of duty. However, she didn’t know what to do. She feels like that she might not be the best officer to be chief engineer again since she has been emotionally compromised. She then said to herself, “What have I done to myself. I’ve done something that shouldn’t have been done and I screwed up and f**ked up and now I don’t think I’m best for anything. Maybe I should be busted down to ensign or something only because I’m a total screw up and a total idiot.” She said to herself.

Bump

Several hours later, after the testing for the cloaking device had been completed, Dawson made his way to the quarters of Lt. Lovejoy. The interaction he had come into the middle of on the bridge just didn’t sit right. He wanted to know what had happened, and he doubted he’d get anything from Kas. As much as he valued him as a friend and a superior officer, Dawson had to admit that his wall of logic did make getting details from him difficult. Also, he seemed to miss a great deal of emotional nuance. Betazeds, however, seemed to be on the exact opposite side of the spectrum. Their empathic abilities seemed to make them quite emotional, and they seemed to forget that not everyone could sense what they could about those around them. they also didn’t always understand that not everyone wears their emotions on their sleeves. He hit the intercom and waited to be let in.

-Quentin.

She walked up to her door and opened the door and noticed that Dawson is there. “Oh uh. Hello. How can I help you today?” She said not happy.

“I wondered if we could talk.” Dawson said with a disarming smile, “Might I come in?” HE noticed her dismal demeanor that seemed to confirm some of his assumptions. They did need to talk.

-Quentin

“Yeah sure. I guess. Please take a seat. How can I help you?” She asked not sure what’s going on with herself. Not sure what to do. Feeling like she’s hating herself.

Dawson came in and took a seat at the small table in her quarters. “I’d like to talk about your altercation with Lt. Commander Kastarak earlier, if I may.” He tried to make his voice gentle and reassuring. “I’ll let you know that Kastarak hasn’t told me anything except that you were feeling unwell and that you had to leave. I could tell by your face when you walked past that something had happened. And Kastarak was a little thrown off himself. So I want to hear from you what happened.”

-Quentin

“Oh. About that. Well um. I told him about Pawl Batario. And that I had feelings for him and started to argue about it and he releaved me from duty. Thinking I’m not mentally stable to be on this mission. And maybe I am not mentally stable for this mission. What if maybe I shouldn’t have brought it up.aybe I should’ve just not be brought onto this mission and stayed here or something. I don’t know anymore. As a Betazoid, I sensed something within us that didn’t feel right. But again with him being a Vulcan it’s harder for me to read. So I don’t know what I’m supposed to do anymore.” She explained just not feeling like she should even be talking about it cause her Department Head likes someone else. But she knows that Quentin isn’t a counselor.

Now Dawson was confused. It was true that he had not been giving a great deal of time to the personal lives of the other crew, his own concerns with the mission and duties as Chief Weapons Officer being his primary concerns, but he had still heard rumors and gossip from the security officers around him. He had heard that Pawl and Kastarak had had a romantic relationship but had thought it had ended. But he had also heard about how Pawl had been in sick bay with Kastarak, so perhaps that relationship was still forming. As for Lt. Lovejoy, her feelings for Pawl seemed to come directly out of left field. He’d heard a few speculations that there had been friction since Lovejoy came back to the Chernov and found Pawl in the position she once held, and what’s more, he had heard that other officers had seen her in the mess hall eating with the Captain. Dawson gave a sigh as he tried to sort this all out in his head.

“Miss Lovejoy,” Dawson began, “Might I ask what prompted you to bring up Pawl to Lt. Commander Kastarak?” Dawson thought about approaching this by removing the emotion from it. Sara obviously was very upset by the events and experiencing a great deal of self-doubt. Dawson wasn’t sure if she was necessarily emotionally compromised to the point where she was unfit for her duties, but he would proceed cautiously until he could make more a determination.

-Quentin

“Listen. The more closer I get to the people I work with, the more I start having a crush on someone. Commander Kastarak only thought I was emotionally compromised because I admitted to him. Yes I had dinner with the captain. But he had turned me down. I told Pawl first but I think that his response was completely. Should I say unusual. However, once I told Commander Kastarak, he wanted me to tell him my status report. However, I had it on my chest for so long I had to tell him. However, once I told him, he decided to send me right here and didn’t even bother asking me any question nothing. As a Vulcan, they typically ask questions before even sending someone to their quarters. Let alone, he doesn’t know me. Not very well. I am a Betazoid. Someone who can read people. He can’t. He’s not like me. I’m not like him. You know what I mean? You know what I’m saying? He knows absolutely nothing about me. Only because I’m a Betazoid. He didn’t even ask anything. And I don’t appreciate it.” She explained to Lieutenant Dawson. Wondering if that the commander might be emotionally compromised.

Dawson forced down a shudder. “Miss Lovejoy,” He began, “Something you will need to work on is how you read people. When you are having a conversation with someone, and you begin to respond to what they had not said, it certainly looks erratic and can be very disconcerting. To beings without that level of telepathy, we choose what we say carefully, Vulcans even more so. You may have been able to sense a desire to hear about Pawl from Kastarak and responded to it, but from Kastarak’s point of view, he simply asked you a question and then you went in about an emotional situation that he did not broach with you. Just as you just now responded to my thoughts about you and the captain when I did not voice them. Most people to not consent to have their thoughts read by another. If you can control your ability, I suggest you do so. If you cannot, then work to only respond to what is said, rather than responding to what is read.”

Dawson let out a sigh, “I do not think you are emotionally compromised and unable to perform your duties, however, I can see how Kastarak may have come to that conclusion. As of now, his order still stands that you are confined to quarters until your next shift, but I think you will be fine to go from there.” Dawson sighed again and his tone became gentler, “Sara, try to understand, Betezed is still a new member of the Federation and still not well understood by many. Most of us do not have the experience that you do, having our thoughts be so easily read. Many would consider such a thing a violation of our privacy and our sense of self, and people can react very strongly to that. Especially a person as private as Kastarak. If you want to be able to make working on this ship, or Starfleet in general, a success, you will need to be able to respect that privacy. Do you understand?”

-Quentin

“Clearly. If anyone here were to understand that I am a Betazoid, maybe I should’ve just stayed at headquarters. It might’ve been the easiest part of my life within Starfleet. At least everyone there actually understands. I know I know I shouldn’t allow things like this to get into the way. But I feel like maybe I should just stay here until further notice until I feel like maybe able to doy duty. I think it’s for the best for me. To stay here in my quarters till things have settled. Clearly it’s already hard for me to even work around those who doesn’t understand betazoids.” She said to him with a very little comfort. “Look I understand your just trying to help me. But I think it’s best I should stay here. Maybe I am emotionally compromised. Maybe I’m not fit to work right now. I just think I should go and talk to the counselor. It’s probably the best thing for me right now and not get into the way of things.” She explained. “Maybe your right I should just control it. But it is way to hard for me to do so.” She said even more.
