Today was the day that Kastarak would have his first one-to-one meetings with the department heads. He would do them in order of seniority. 9 o’clock was Mr Grey’s scheduled time. Now at 10 it was Dr Symar’s. Their meeting was new, the first time in Kastarak’s office as XO. Their dynamic would now change. From being Dr Symar’s subordinate, Kastarak was now Dr Symar’s superior. Would that affect their friendship, their cooperation, and their regard for one another?

Kastarak waited for Dr Symar to enter.

Symar was eager to see what his former protege would turn out as the Chernov’s Executive Officer, and of course now his superior. Seeing him grow as an officer was something that the CMO would always be proud of, even if he did have to hide the true emotions he felt until recently. Being able to be himself among any kind of crew, let alone a Starfleet crew was a privilege he wasn’t expecting…

“You wanted to see me Lieutenant,” Symar asked formally as he crossed into his superior’s office.

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

“Good morning, doctor. Please come in.” Kastarak gestured for his former mentor and senior to come in. Now, he was Symar’s senior. It was peculiar.

“The agenda of today’s conversation is to discuss our respective roles and how we might be supportive of one another in the performance of our duties.”

Kastarak sat down by the desk. On the other side of it was an empty chair for Symar.

– Lt Kastarak (XO)

‘As a medical professional, you’ll always have my ear, though I’ll admit, working against my heritage will be interesting for me.’

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

“I appreciate that, Doctor. How may I help you with your heritage and identity? Would you like to cease masking or would you like to mask more? Or is there a third alternative you wish to explore?”

– Lt Kastarak (XO)

“There’s no point hiding it anymore Kas, I am who I am, the Federation and Starfleet will just have to embrace that.”

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

“You have my support, doctor,” said Kastarak. He wanted Symar to feel confident and supported. “How would you like me to help you in that?”

– Lt Kastarak (XO)

“Vouch for me wherever you can Lieutenant, you’ll always have my support as XO of this ship. You’re going to make a fine role model for this crew.”

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

“Whenever I can, I shall,” Kastarak replied. “Thank you, I hope I will.”

“Now, as for practical matters. How is staffing and resources in Sickbay?”

– Lt Kastarak (First Officer)

“A restock if we stop off at a Starbase sooner or later wouldn’t go a miss.”

-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-

“Naturally, doctor. Prepare a procurement list and send it to me before we reach the Sol system.”
