Chief Engineer

Pawl had a little bit of free time after his breaking visit with Kasarak. It was hard to keep his emotions in check after leaving the XO’s office. He moved to the nearest lift and headed to engineering as he moved to his office without bothering anyone else as the doors opened as he swiftly entered and the doors closed right after he entered as he locked the door to the office and he tapped a few keys on the keypad next to the door.

Pawl thought for a moment maybe he should have visited the gym or another area to get his frustrations out. He thought about hitting the desk here in the office, but he knew that would end horribly destroying the desk and hurting himself in the process would not be a wise thing at this moment in time. as he moved around the desk and plopped into the seat as he stared at the terminal display. “Computer check and see if there is an open com channel available for me to use to contact Risa and Pacifica to reach my twin brothers.” Pawl asked calmly as he could trying to focus his emotions not to bust out crying.

The computer beeped several times. “Working!” As the computer started checking available channels. The computer beeped again before it spoke. There are channels available, and they are unrestricted at present. “The computer opened 2 channels and linked them. As the monitor went to split screen with the federation simple on them as he waited for someone to answer.

Pawl felt like the call was taking forever for anyone to answer. Pawl forced himself to remember they both vacation worlds and they might be busy or not near their terminals. Pawl was about to cut the calls when the left half of the screen came to life as he saw his brother standing there in a nice dress suit. “Pawl?? Oh! my goddesses. I am so glad to see you. Wait what’s wrong?? Tanis noticed instantly and felt Pawl’s feelings. Brother?? I am here?? As the other half of the screen flicked to life.

Liam spoke quickly. “Pawl What’s the matter as pawl’s feeling flooded into bother his twin brothers. “I am here too! “Liam said as he was dressed in his Speedo brief swimsuit. And a cover smock. as both camera angles gave a closer look at their faces as they both took a seat in their respective chairs.

There was a good moment of silence as both were getting the story from Pawl’s mind. They both apologized for the loss of Pawl’s new short-term lover that was so part of his life. “Thank you guys I knew you would understand.” Pawl said with a crackly voice. “That’s what brothers are for…” both said in unison. Ever so long that pawl could remember they were always finishing each other’s sentences.

Tricking the teachers that weren’t Betzolds from time to time even in school. Just for kicks and a bit of fun but they did not abuse their identical nature to keep from problems future or strong unknown problems. “I wish I had time to visit you both before leaving on the next mission, a rather dangerous one but can’t go into it other than that. I rather be fully controlled again before that happens, but this will have to do. “Pawl said calmly now with a less crackle in his voice. His talking to his brother was helping. They always could help get him calm and focused. It did not matter who was hurt or in pain. They helped one another all the time. They were all glad they had this time with one another.

“I know I tend to fall for someone easier and more deeply than you too do. But I know Thank the goddesses for you are in my life Or I would be in dire straits. Oh? Am I still being shunned by mother and most of the other half of the family?” Pawl added the question knowing full well that he really did not need the answer. He knew the others were still part of the family. And that he was lucky that they were not shunned by the family too. But he knew that mother dear does ask about me through them, so she won’t contact me, so she won’t break her word of not wanting to contact me. But if she knew what might be happening in the future, she maybe resends her non communication with me. but that’s her choice but by the time she finds out she will be too late.

The brothers started some small talk to get Pawl to talk about what happened and to let him vent and talk about other things too. It took Pawl a bit, but he slowly opened up about everything about how Kasarak and him met to the unfortunate termination of their coupling. And how close he thought they were, and it could have been a possible coupling or merging their relationship into a loving marriage.

Pawl was feeling sad, but his emotions were more focused as the crackling of his voice subsided more. Maybe more of a hiccup but he seemed more stable now. “Thank you, guys, for the emotional help and hugs. He felt the warmness of the emotions comforting him like a blanket. Both the other brothers nodded in unison. As in agreement before they spoke again together. “You better keep in touch better this round or we will come looking for you?” as both smiled in unison that were serious, but they were kidding too. “I love you guys!” Pawl commented with a smile finally. “I better go I have a lot of work to do now. As he tapped the channel as the screens started to close to the federation symbol along with the Starfleet symbol before the screen went dark a minute later.

Pawl spoke to himself briefly. Saying a small Betazoid Prayer for his brothers, his family, and the ship and crew before standing again. “Thank you, Goddesses! For keeping my family and friends safe.” Pawl finished quickly as he moved to the door and unlocked the door again. As he went through his odd emails and other correspondences. Before moving back to the main engineering area to check on the progress of the staff before saying his goodbyes before the mission starts.

William coincidentally walked next to Pawl as he left his quarters, a small bag slung across his left shoulder “Lieutenant” He greeted the engineering chief in his usual formal tone of voice “Headed to Engineering?” He asked in a more casual even curious tone

“Yes! Sir! As a matter of fact, I am.” Pawl said with a small smile. “Going somewhere sir!” pawl asked calmly to the officer.

William nodded slowly “The same way as you, I have some sensor equipment I’ve been pushing back on getting maintenance for a while and now that we’ll be running a skeleton crew I thought it best to get it over with, I got a time slot with the maintenance team in thirty minutes” He was being almost conversational, “I thought you didn’t have a duty shift until this evening?” He asked mostly out of politeness

“Sadly I am always on duty in one form or another We can sure try and add these new sensors to the ship or to whatever you wish Sir!” Pawl said calmly “Please tell me more about these sensor pallets or arrays?” Pawl asked. “Do you think we’re going to need extra power for the arrays?”

William shook his head “These are just a collection of tricorders that need maintenance and software upgrades” He said shaking his bag “I also had a crate of Heavy Duty tricorders sent up but they aren’t a priority. I also have a batch of sensor relay emitters that need to be readjusted to contact the Chernov main computer, we got a batch during our last resupply but only connected a handful”

“I see It won’t take any time at all to get these done for you. Sir! As for the others still, it would not take too long to do either. Before the mission starts.” Pawl added a smile. “I can even do it as a side project after the mission starts. For the most part, most of the systems are going to be running on automatic to see how they perform.” pawl said kindly to the chief science officer.

William returned the smile albeit a more stiff and polite one, the word unpracticed came to mind “Do you feel prepared for the assignment?” He asked

“yes sir! I am prepared as well as we can be under the restraints of the mission. Limited staff and all.” Pawl said kindly to the man. noticing the fake look of his smile felt to him like he rather had not done this in some time and felt out of place on him. “Thank you sir for checking in on me.” Pawl sighed hard for a moment. Trying to keep his emotions in check.

William, frowned and raised an eyebrow. He’d spent too long avoiding social obligations that he still felt uncomfortable making small talk, well this was the perfect opportunity “Something the matter Lieutenant?” He asked, the sigh seemed to be a prompt one would take to inquire about someone’s mental state. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he felt his other voice groan Do you want me to take over? mentally William shook his head I need the practice

“I am ok Sir! I just … How do I put this I just lost a relationship?” Pawl said with a straight face not mentioning any names. “I am good. sir! Pawll assured the officer. “I see you are assumed to the small talk.” Pawl observed calmly. “I got this.” pawl said kindly to the officer. ” I appreciate your concern. I am ok My talk with my brothers helped a lot.” He said with a polite smile. “They were always good to get me back in the right frame of mind.” Pawl said sincerely.

William curiously cocked his head “I wasn’t aware you were in a relationship” He said with the tact and guile of a trouncing elephant. He heard the voice in his head You didn’t know he had brothers either The mental tone was mocking “A crewmate I assume”

“Sadly a short-term one. ” Pawl said calmly not given any names. “Before you ask. Yes, I have twin brothers, we are triplets. Liam and Tanis are their names. I am part of that trio.” Pawl said with a smile.

William inclined his head as they neared the turbolift “Must be an interesting experience, I could not relate, being an only child myself” He frowned, Pawl could read annoyance from the Science chief. Usually, he would only read calm or boredom from the man but he seemed to be more open with his feelings today. “You are still young, I doubt it will take long to get over your sorrow” The words might seem callous to someone only listening but Pawl would be able to sense something close to understanding from the second officer, as If he knew the feeling of heartbreak personally. There was an undertone of shared commiseration only in the emotions he felt not in his tone of voice, clearly, he intended only to show empty support with his words but his emotions showed a deeper understanding.

Pawl kept quiet before he spoke. “That it is Sir!” He said sincerely to the man. noting his feelings but doing his best not to go too deep into them as he spoke again. “You’re more than welcome to talk to me or socialize about anything you wish I won’t judge you.” Pawl said kindly and sincerely to the man. “I am doing ok sir Just still a bit fresh in the mind and heart a bit but I will be ok. And I appreciate the kindness and understanding you’re trying to show even if it’s not easy for you to do so personally.”

William snorted at the junior lieutenant’s final statement as the lift doors opened. He stepped inside, grabbed the pole, and said “Main Engineering” Before returning his attention to Pawl “I’ll let this be a beginning” He said looking straight forward, he realized that his emotions had been readable and felt embarrassment for a moment which was quickly covered by calm, a Vulcan mental exercise he’d learned some years ago.
