While Lieutenant Lovejoy went from the mess hall to engineering, she went ahead and started to work in engineering and didn’t do any diagnostics. She stayed at her post and worked on what she needed to work on not what her department head needed done but what needed to be done by her.

Lieutenant Junior Grade Lovejoy

A short time later Pawl entered engineering as he took note of his crew before moving towards Miss Lovejoys Station. “Hello again long time no see.” He let out a tiny laugh. “I see you are doing things.” Pawl finished as he waited for her reply. As he looked at his padd for a moment to check on the odd chores and repairs everyone was doing.

Lt. Jg. Pawl Batario - Chief Engineer

“Hello sir. Yes I am. I’m doing my work like a normal engineer would.” She said with a smile and recording everything she has done so far on a Padd and handed the padd to him.

Lieutenant Junior Grade Lovejoy - Engineer

Pawl took the padd from her as he looked over everything. “Wow, you have been busy!” Pawl said kindly to her “Looking good keep up the excellent work.” He said with a smile as he left to check on his other engineers. Then a few minutes later he returned to Miss Lovejoy. “we can run a level five test on all the things you have repaired to see if there are still any issues this won’t require us to inform command since it is automatic and does not require any shutdown time to perform the test. on any of the systems anything higher we would need to ask the captain about. to make sure it does not interfere with mission or safety of the ship.” Pawl said with a smile as he initiated the level five scan of the repaired systems.

“Thank you sir.” She said. “I knew that after I did that level one diagnostic the other day I knew I did something wrong. But now that I hadn’t done that I know that doing these minor repairs was something that needed to be done.” She said. “So about my training that I need or is this what it is?” She asked.

Engineer Lovejoy

“Honestly, I believe they are mostly refreshers and getting you reorganized with protocols. structures. Focus on the jobs that need to be done. for the small and deal with the bigger ones as they come.” Pawl said calmly to her. “You will get there I have every confidence in you Sara.” Pawl added “There will be some book work as well. This way there is a paper trail of your progress and training too.” PAwl said with a smile.

“I know but,” she sighed. “What if I’m not good enough to become the Chief Engineer again? I mean I understand that you think that I am but at the same time, I feel like maybe you would be a better fit to be the Chief Engineer. But I also understand that you think that I should become the Chief Engineer once again. However, I’d like to get the refreshers and get reorganized with protocols, and structures done and out of the way.” She said.

Lt. Lovejoy

“Most of the protocols and reorganizations are simple bookwork. other items are simple hands-on applications. most could be done in the ship’s engine room or testing areas of engineering.” Pawl said calmly to her. “If you don’t want to do this or become chief Engineer again that is your decision. I won’t force you to do anything you feel uncomfortable with.” Pawl said calmly to her. “I will move you from other assignments so you can focus on your bookwork and testing. And the occasional engineering applications on real items in engineering later.” Pawl said quickly. “I need to check on the others in engineering. Be back in a Bit.” PAwl said softly and a bit unsure now.

“Well I do want to be Chief Engineer again sir. But I’m doubting myself.” She said. “Yes sir. I’ll be right here.”

Lovejoy. Engineer

Pawl nodded calmly as he continued on his way. Not sure what to say now. He took his time and checked on the others in engineering that was working. They all seemed reasonable and were doing their jobs properly and with efficiency . As he made his way back to Sara. Pawl sighed hard. “I understand you have doubts and my understanding of this is not much help or my faith in you that you can do this seems not to be helping either.” Pawl stated calmly to her. but if you can’t get this doubt under control it will cause you more problems down the road. “I trust you with my life as an engineer. I trust you to do your job effectively and efficiently and your pride and love and understanding of all things are an asset.” Pawl finished as he waited for her to understand what he was trying to say to her with sincerity and peace.

“I understand. I won’t let you down.” She said.

Engineer Lovejoy

“Go ahead and pick your assignments from the board. I will follow through and check things when finished.” Pawl said kindly to her. For the more in-depth jobs I will be there with any questions you may have. And I will help in repairs with you if you need my help.” PAwl added then finished. “Sooner or later all of the odd jobs will be done and he can give the engineering teams a bit of time off or they can pursue a side job or activity for fun.” PAwl said with a smile.

“I’ll get on it right now sir. Like I said I won’t let you down.” She said.

Engineer Lovejoy

Pawl was rather busy today with all the odd jobs being done in engineering as he checked the progress of all of his engineering staff. He felt like he was stuck in amber or what is the old earth saying stuck in honey or molasses? He just could not remember at that particular moment. It took him hours to get back to Miss Lovejoy by the time he got close to visiting her it was almost the end of duty shifts for all. Pawl sighed hard before he spoke with a rather rough and dry voice. The words barely escaped his lips. “Evening Miss Lovejoy.” Pawl squeaked out barely.

“Hello, sir. Here’s my report sir before I log off for the night. Not sure if it works sir. But knowing that I still need to improve on my skills and everything, I just thought I’d give you a status report of what I have completed.” She said.

Lt. J.G. Lovejoy -Engineer-

Kastarak entered engineering now. He had wanted an excuse to see Pawl, carrying a faulty medical tricorder with him.

He looked around, hoping to see Pawl around.

– Kastarak

Pawl felt a presence enter the field of his mind. As he turned to see the doctor looking around apparently looking for him he felt. “Doctor I am over here.” he waved to show his presence to the officer. He moved away from his console as he moved towards the doctor. “Hello, there Doctor what’s up?” using some old earth slang. Pawl’s voice was a bit hoarse. fading in and out.

“All is well,” Kastarak replied calmly. “I wanted to see you and learn about where you work. Would you have time to show me around?”

Then Kastarak reacted to Pawl’s voice. “How is your voice? How are you?”

– Kastarak

“You are more than welcome to look around and I am more than willing to give you a tour of my realm.” Pawl said with a kind smile on his face. “I am ok Just haven’t had time to get a drink in a bit so my throat is rather dry.” Pawl added. a bit hoarse again. “Well, this is main engineering the warp cores?” as he pointed even though that was fairly obvious . “These are several workstations. we all share all the time. I tend to work in the office if I want to work alone.” PAwl said as they walked around engineering.

“I see,” said Kastarak. Pawl was spoke much as a matter of fact, despite his smile. Concerned with Pawl’s dry throat, he added: “Let’s have something to drink. Is there a dispenser somewhere around here we can go?”

“There is one right over there.” he pointed casually. “How has been your day Kasarak?” Pawl asked calmly to him as they both walked towards the dispenser. “I see a tricorder in your hands Is someone ill? or needed checked on or is that my new patient?” Pawl attempt at light humor.

It took longer than Kastarak wanted to admit to himself to understand the joke.

“Indeed,” he simply replied, as he took some water and handed the first cup over to Pawl, before filling his own cup up. “It is experiencing electrical dysfunction. It is....”

He stopped himself. He tried mentalizing. How might a tricorder experience electronical dysfunction?

“It is experiences confusion, possible as a result of trauma. I have reasons to believe that one of my colleagues dropped it during a Jeffries tube expedition, the fall exceeding the manufactural specifications.”

He switched the subject, as he observed Pawl. He sensed concern in his gut, a feeling of worry that he hadn’t experienced since he was young.

“You must drink, Pawl. You’re dehydrated.”

Pawl was a bit intrigued by the way that Kasarak described the situation of the tricorder. “I see Lets connect the unit to a diagnostic array to see where the problem is at?” Pawl said politely as he took the unit and started to set up the test routine. “Usually tricorders were known for their resistance and their toughness in most situations But there are a time or two that they have had to be replaced or recycled due to defects that were unforeseen.” PAwl added calmly. PAwl took the drink of water from the doctor. Knowing he was trying to treat his thirst. noting a hint of concern and worry from him as he drank the water. “Thank you doctor.” Pawl said with a small smile.

Kastarak watched as Pawl performed the test routine. Engineering and medicine had many similarities, Kastarak thought to himself.

“Are you feeling better now?” he asked.

– Kastarak

“Thank you I am feeling much better. Kasarak.” Pawl said with a smile.

“Very well,” replied Kastarak, relieved. There was something endearing to the way Pawl said his name.

Returning to a state of serenity, Kastarak inquired about the tricorder. “Is this medical tricorder, in your view, salvageable and reparable?”

– Kastarak

“Yes, this tricorder can be saved and repaired like now it will take a bit of time but can be done.” PAwl said with a polite smile. “I will get this done as soon as possible.” PAwl said kindly to the officer. He was glad that Kaskarak took the time to bring such an issue to him to help with. it felt nice to be entrusted with such delicate work to help fix things. Pawl felt good by this act.

“I appreciate that you take this on personally and that I was able to observe part of how you work. It helps me to learn more about you,” replied Kastarak, hopeful that they might meet again soon, privately.

– Kastarak

“You are more than welcome anytime to visit me here in engineering or even in off hours. That would be very nice.” Pawl said calmly to Kasarak.”I keep learning more about you too.” Pawl said sincerely to him. As the computer finished the diagnostic with a soft beep that was slightly audible. “Well, the unit was checked by the computer. The processor and memory are faulty. Which is kinda odd for a fall to cause a failure of this type.” Pawl pondered. “Was there a power surge during that time too?”
pawl asked calmly.”But the unit can be fixed as good as new. It won’t take any time at all to do I am used to tinkering with small devices.” Pawl said with a smile as he took the unit apart pulled the defective items and replaced them with fresh unit pieces and installed them as he started a new set of diagnostics on the tricorder. Also ran further checks to make sure the unit was or will run properly as he reconnected it to the computer after fixing it.

Kastarak listened. It was interesting to him to hear how Pawl viewed the situation with the tricorder. It appeared Kastarak’s initial hypothesis had been wrong. So the fault had been either before or after the fall…

“No power surge, that we knew of,” Kastarak replied. “I’ll wait here while you work, unless you have to prioritise more important engineering matters.”

– Kastarak

“You are more than welcome to wait. It won’t take any time to fix this little machine.” Pawl said with a smile. “Besides 90% of engineering is done except items that need a starbase to complete. “All I am doing right now is running diagnostics on the tricorder So far its running better than expected.” Pawl said kindly as he heard the final beeps from the test as he removed the device from its shelf and closed and opened it a few times to make sure the hinges were ok. He tapped a few keys did a quick scan of himself and looked over the readings. All looked good as he closed the tricorder and handed it out for Kasarak to take from him.
“Here you go good as new.” Pawl smiled.

“Thank you, Pawl.”, Kastarak said and looked Pawl in the eyes. “You have helped me.”

Kastarak was preparing to leave Engineering, but waited to see if Pawl wanted to say or do anything else.

“No Problem Kasarak.” Pawl said calmly to him. “Why wouldn’t I help you?” Pawl asked softly as he pondered the odd response.

“I do not understand,” said Kastarak, genuinely perplexed. “what makes you assume that I have thought you would not help me? “

– Kastarak

“Sorry?? I am still having difficulty with the galactic common. or terrian English. I must have misunderstood what you said.” blushing a bit from embarrassment.

Kastarak thought he had spoken clearly. He questioned whether he should repeat himself, breaking the sentence down into smaller structures, but that would be illogical and not bring the conversation further.

“I apologise, I must have misunderstood your earlier query as well. Indeed, this language is not my native language either. With whom can you speak your native language?”

Now Kastarak tried to do what humans call “small-talk”. Not an easy thing to perform.

“You are fine, Doctor.” Pawl said calmly. “we are all still learning their small talk ideal. most of my conversations are usually telepathic when I am home on Betazed. Sometimes normal voice conversations but usually in Betazed language.” as Pawl attempted to explain. “not many others have ever taken the time to learn the language most learn galactic common or English to or use translators to help them understand one another.” pawl added then finished his explanation of the situation.

“Perhaps you might teach me something of your language at some point,” Kastarak said while looking Pawl in the eyes. “I regret I must return to SIckbay now. This newly repaired tricorder will come to use. I appreciate your speedy help.”

– Kastarak

“Very good Doctor!” pawl smiled. “Happy to help as for the language lesson Sure we can do that?” Pawl said calmly to him. “Take care.”

Lovejoy was at her station and noticed that something was out of alignment she then walked up to pawl and said “Sir, I think I might have found something that is almost completely out of alignment. However, I felt like I should do it, but since you are chief engineer, I feel like it is necessary to bring it up to you before I do any adjustments to ships systems.” She explained before doing anything. Lovejoy then handed Lieutenant Pawl a data PaDD.

PAwl looked over the padd as she spoke and let her finish. “Please proceed with repairs on the alignment issue.” Pawl said calmly to her as he noticed she was trying to make sure all was according to protocol.

“Yes sir. Might I ask you something before I go ahead and realignment sir?” She asked sorta smiling standing there. Not knowing what else she could do after that. But she knew if anything she’d make Pawl proud of her.
