Umbri woke up, checked the date, and smiled. It was their birthday. As usual, they got out of bed and kneeled on the floor, reciting their morning prayer:

“I lift up your name, O First of Dragons, and pray to uphold your sacred charge.

Let me protect those around me, as your wings enfold us. Let me seek for truth, as your eyes watch over us. Let me strike against wickedness, as your talons defend us. Let me resist temptation and falseness, as your heart guides us.

I lift up your name, O First of Dragons, and pray to uphold your sacred charge.”

They clutched their dragon eye necklace and bowed before getting up and getting ready for the day. Umbri decided to wear a white blouse with a royal blue vest, gray leggings, and black combat boots. They put on blue eyeshadow with silver eyeliner and white mascara. Finally, they left their hair down and stepped outside of their quarters.

The same morning, across the ship, Kastarak woke up. After his morning routine of light exercise and cleaning himself up, he checked today’s schedule. He noticed he had a reminder, “Anniversary of the birth of Umbri (Earth calendar)”. Ah, he thought to himself, remembering that in Earth custom, one should send a message of congratulations for surviving yet another year.

“Computer,” he ordered, “Please send to Lieutenant Umbri Hawkins, private channel, the following:

“Dear Umbri, in honour of the anniversary of your birth according to your native calendar, it is my most voluntary task to convey to you my warmest congratulations. Live long and prosper. Kastarak“

Content with having perform his duty of friendship, he changed into his uniform – the black trousers and boots, and the blue shirt. He was ready for another double shift in Sickbay.
