It was a quiet afternoon in Sickbay. Kastarak saw Symar sitting in his office. Kastarak headed there, hoping to get some time to speak with him.“Sir?” Kastarak inquired. “May I have a few minutes of your time? May I come in?”
– Lt jg Kastarak (physician / counsellor)
Symar looked up from his desk, keenly aware that some of the nurses who did not yet know his true halfbreed identity could be listening in from around Chernov’s Sickbay; to that end, he arched an eyebrow but kept his face deadpan, “What can I do for you Doctor Kastarak?”
-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-
“A private conversation, sir,” Kastarak said, understanding Symar’s reasons. The windows were blinded, and the door closed.
“Symar, how are you?”
– Lt jg Kastarak, physician.
“Better than I thought I’d be at this stage of the game Kastarak,” Symar said, once more letting his true identity slip out, “Just still trying to process everything I guess.”
-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-
Kastarak nodded understandingly. “Yes, sir.” he said. “I am with you. There is something else I’d like to discuss with you.”
– Kastarak
“What can I do for you Ensign?”
-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-
Kastarak noted the use of the wrong rank for him, but he paid it no major thought. Symar would mean no disrespect, rather, his lack of attention to detail would be explained by his Romulan-ness, and his letting-down of his guard in Kastarak’s presence. That was a mark of respect, and the sentiment Kastarak took to heart. Even though it had annoyed him before when Symar would call him kid, it was a term of endearment he now kind of missed. Things were confusing.
Kastarak decided to put the topic of conversation up front, matter-of-fact-ly, and in a Vulcan formal fashion.
“Sir, I will be taking a leave of absence. I will be accompanying Commander T’Aria on a private trip to New Vulcan. Necessary adjustments to the Sickbay schedule will be needed to be made. But…” Kastarak paused, looked into Symar’s eyes, with his tone softening, and his words coming out a bit slower: “I am concerned for your psychological welfare in our absence from you.”
– Lt jg Kastarak
Symar realised the mistake he’d made as soon as he said it and grimaced, “Sorry Lieutenant. been a long couple of days. I sure could use the rest, but appreciate that I’m not going to be able to keep up the facade for much longer.”
-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-
“I understand, sir,” Kastarak replied, with an ounce of empathy in his voice. “There are two options I immediately see before me. Option 1 is that you take a leave of absence two. Perhaps you have a confidante friend you might be able to visit, or you can confine yourself to quarters if you fear for your own well-being. Option 2 is that you speak with the captain. I will be willing to accompany you to that meeting, if that is your wish. The captain is kind, empathising, understanding and deeply protective of his crew.”
– Lt jg Kastarak
Symar sighed, “I’d… really appreciate that Ensign.”
-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-
Kastarak was concerned. He had presented two options. Again, Symar forgot Kastarak’s rank. It concerned Kastarak, as he was assessing the welfare of his superior officer. Would Symar be OK? Was he even OK? Was Symar fit to serve? Perhaps the most ethical course of action would be to force Symar on medical leave? He did seem to be unable to keep his faculties in order. Kastarak thought of performing psychological, neuropsychological and neurological evaluations and assessments of Symar, but now was not the time.
He knew from experience that when presented with two options, people would refer to the latter one if they did not specify which one they meant, as it was the most nearest in memory. He tested that theory.
“That I accompany you to the captain? I would be honoured.”
– Kastarak
OOC: Totally not misreading your rank twice, don’t mind me! xD
Symar stood, “Sorry Lieutenant, that was the second time I’ve misranked you in the last few minutes, which gives me all the more resolve that I need to have this conversation with the Captain as soon as possible.”
-Lieutenant Symar: Chief Medical Officer-
“That is prudent, sir. I will assist you in any way you wish, before I leave for New Vulcan. Do not concern yourself with the rank. We know the hierarchy between us. Be free to call me what makes most sense to you. We can do away with appellations of rank.”
– Lt jg Kastarak
