Dawson walked into the sick bay and began looking for Symar. He had met the Lt. briefly at the Wardroom dinner the Captain had hosted and was reminded to get to sick bay for his exam. He’d made sure to come shortly after and not keep the good doctor waiting too long, he hoped.

Chief Weapons Officer Lt. Q Dawson reporting for Duty

It wasn’t who Dawson was looking for, but Kastarak and Nurse Sutalo were there, attending while Dawson entered. He knew that Dawson had an appointment with Symar today – it had been covered in the morning meeting that day, and Kastarak ensured he would be ready to assist Symar, should Symar wish for it. Certain days it seemed like Symar had a greater need for Kastarak than others, and Kastarak wanted to ensure that Symar would be protected and aided in any event.

He greeted Dawson.

“Ah Mr Dawson, good morning. Dr Symar will be with you shortly. In the mean, may I introduce Ensign Nurse Sutalo. He is my closest colleague in Sickbay.”

Sutalo stretched out his hand to Dawson. A weapons officer needed a good nurse in case of wounds and scars – which would potentially come true once Dawson and Kastarak agreed on a time for their sword sparring. He would soon suggest a time. He just needed Sutalo to move away first…

“Good to meet you, sir,” said Sutalo.

Dawson smiled at seeing Kastarak, “Ah, hello counselor,” he said making his way over to them. He outstretched a hand to Ensign Sutalo and said, “Pleasure to meet you as well, sir. I’m sure we’ll become plenty acquainted while I’m here. I certainly haven’t been known to keep out of trouble. Not to mention the toll my hobbies tend to take on me.” Dawson looked about and asked, “Anywhere in particular you’d like me while we wait for the good doctor?”

Sutalo shook Dawson’s hand, nodded, smiled, and said. “So I’ve heard, sir!” Sutalo took a step back, turned to Dawson again, “Lieutenant,” and then to Kastarak, “Doctor…” and left.

Kastarak nodded back to Sutalo.

“Feel free to it wherever you like,” Kastarak said. “We’re not busy today.”

He was about to leave the patient, but stopped himself.

“Mr Dawson? Would you be free anytime on Thursday for sparring? I have a day off and no plans.”

– Dr Kastarak

Dawson had begun to head to an empty bed when he heard Kastarak. He paused slightly and turned back to look at him, “I think so,” he said considering his schedule. He smiled and said, “Yes, I do believe I’m free for a bit of sparring.” He took a seat and faced Kastarak, “I’m glad to hear you’re interested. Most people humor me out of politeness but don’t really share that interest. I look forward to sparring with you, Doctor.”

Lt. Q Dawson (CWO)

Despite Kastarak’s cross-species knowledge in psychology, such matters of politeness or humouring did not come to him naturally – it would always require a conscious cognitive effort. For him, if he agrees to something, or promises to do something, honour bounds him to commit and fulfil what he says. He didn’t need saying it though.

“As do I. Thursday it is. Message me a time.”

And with that, Kastarak excused himself. He had another patient needing his attention.

All it was for Dawson now was to wait for chief medical officer, Dr Symar, to take over.
