After arriving on the Chernov and completing his examinations, Q made his way to see Captain Taggert. It was the first time he was a department head and reporting to the Captain instead of a CO. Dawson had to admit the thought made him a little nervous. But, this had been what he had wanted. He had left his old life behind him and moving forward. Q stood up straight, hands behind his back, and a stoic expression on his face. Only one chance for a first impression and all that. HE rang the door chime to the Captain’s ready room and waited for the response.

–LT. Quentin Q Dawson (CWO)

Chris was at his fish tank by the meeting room portion of his office feeding the little devils when he heard the chime. “Come!” Came a powerful voice but not booming or loud but even toned and professional. When Quentin entered the office he would notice a lot of very horror themed little cube boxes everywhere and they were either in glass cases or on little stands. There were pictures of very grotesque humanoids with all manners of their skin either peeled off, burned or cut for a reason and they were all autographed. Sitting on his desk was a cube shape box like the others but it was covered in light brown butcher wrapping paper and sealed with a read wax insignia. This would indicate that this very box was very precious to the Captain. Over where Chris was standing to the right of the entryway, was a 4 foot tall, round glass tank filled with a lightish blue liquid that was not really water but something else and inside of it was a partially eaten right arm and a partially eaten left leg and all showed signs of them being ripped off before being eaten. And there was a perfectly severed right hand cut below the wrist in there as well.

Quentin would notice looking at the captain that he has scars on the right side of his face and he wore an eye patch. His right arm and left leg were both cybernetic and that might explain the body parts floating in the tank but he has his right hand. Who’s hand could that be? Looking up from the fish tank next to the body parts. He smiled. “Oh! Hello. You must be Quentin Dawson the new Chief Weapons Officer. I am Chris Taggart. Welcome to the Chernov.” HE walked over to him and put his hand out for a shake. “Please have a seat over there by that cart filled with refreshments. I have coffee and tea and some French pastries that begin with a M.” He walked over there as well and poured himself some coffee with cream. “Want a cup?”

Q entered the room and was floored from then offset. The inside looked as though it had been designed by early 20th-century filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro. A veritable museum of horror. And its sole occupant seemed to be no exception. The man was a cyborg with an eye patch. You certainly don’t see those every day. Q made the connection between the body parts in the tank and the cybernetics of the captain. Q swallowed and let his stiff English upbringing take over. giving a smile, he reached out and took the captain’s hand in his. The hand he was holding seemed human despite the cybernetics it was attached to. this just made Q wonder whose hand it was in the tank. “Thank you, captain,” Q said releasing his hand. He went to sit where the captain had gestured took another look around the room. He began to notice the signed cubes about the office and thought they were memorabilia. Q made up his mind that the Captain simply suffered an accident somewhere and has a taste for the macabre. Nothing against that. He thought about what Kastarak must think of this office. When Taggert mentioned the french pastries, Q perked up slightly, “would those be macaroons, Sir?”

Chris looked up from his coffee cup which said, “Galaxies Second Best Captain” with Second marked out and “Third” written above in red letters. “Yes. That’s it. As long as they taste good. That’s all that matters.” Reaching to grab one and eating it. “Hmm. Pretty good. Have as many as you’d like, if not, I’ll get fat! But joking aside Mr. Dawson. Why did you want to come be the Chief Weapons Officer aboard the Chernov. You know we are a Battlecruiser and a very proven one at that?”

Captain Chris Taggart, CO

Q reached out and took one of the desserts and sampled it. A tart and sweet taste of raspberry greeted the first bite and Q smiled. He was already beginning to relax to this new captain. The man had an infectious humor. Q thought this man could make a Klingon prison planet seem like a mild inconvenience on an otherwise splendid vacation. The thought made Q chuckle.
Q cleared his throat before answering the captain’s question, “Well, sir, I believe it is precisely that reason why I chose this. As you may have read in my file, my life was on a very different path before Starfleet. One that wasn’t of my choosing. So, I decided to break from that life. To choose something that so drastically opposed it. Also, what better way to earn a sister’s pride than through bravery in the face of great danger? I suppose I also was drawn to this from my favorite stories. I loved the tales of Cyrano De Bergerac and Don Quixote. Warriors who bring romanticism to an unloving world.” Q shrugged and leaned back in his chair, “Also, you said yes, sir.”

-LT. Quentin Q Dawson (CWO)

Laughing at the last part. “I supposes I did. But this is not some romance novel and we do not seek out glory. We’re not Klingons. Although if we were we would be rock stars. But the danger comes to us and we just rise up to the occasion. I know what you meant and know that you didn’t mean anything you just said like that. But the danger is very, very real. Now, to answer some of your unspoken questions. I did not get to look like this in battle with a Klingon or during space combat. I was an extremely arrogant and handsome man as a Chief Medical Officer. Had a different lady almost every night and that is a fact. One day a very particular lady came into my life and my life changed. I slowly became a one woman man and we eventually got married. We took our honeymoon on Risa and on the very first day. The first F*&king day. We were out swimming and got attacked by a giant squid. It killed here and ripped me to pieces.” Points to the tank. “So I vowed that I would be a guy that she and everyone could would want me to be. I was very vain and boastful, so the only thing I told the doctors to not repair and leave it like it was my face. Now I see it every time and everyday and am reminded to be a better person each day. So as horrific as that experience was, it was a blessing in disguise so to speak.”

He gets up and sips on his coffee some more as he stares at the tank. “The other perfectly cut hand in there belongs to my very best friend. We were on a mission and he knew something bad was going to happen and he punched me to get me to let him go so he could save at least one of us. As soon as he did that, some quantum singularity happened in that very small area and I was left holding his hand, quite literally.” Turning around to face Q. “So Quinten. The point of all of this is to not take crap too seriously in life. Be serious when it needs to but when it is time to relax. Enjoy it and learn new things, or go on vacations, love deeply and don’t be afraid to get hurt. Life is way to short.”

Q listened enraptured. The man had a presence of space that commanded attention. This was a man who seemed to radiate charisma. When he finished, Q set his saucer down and stared up at Taggart. “Sir,” he said, “You say this isn’t a romance novel, but you seem to have walked right out of one. But I know what you mean sir. I just don’t want to spend my life sitting behind a desk knowing I could be doing more. That she would want me to do more.”

“I understand that. Truly I do.”

Walking back over to the table and Quinten and eating another Macaroon and refilling his coffee. “What is this about earning a sisters pride? What does that mean?”

Captain Chris Taggart, CO

Q nervously cleared his throat. “Well sir,” He began, “When I was fourteen, my sister was serving as an ensign onboard the Odysseus. She was on the away mission when the incident happened. To this day I still don’t know what exactly happened to her. It was all classified. Since her death, my parents tried to steer me away from Starfleet. Sent me to Cambridge hoping I’d find something to distract me from the stars. But nothing did. I kept thinking that Clarissa would have wanted more for me. that she wouldn’t have wanted her death to be the reason I didn’t follow my dreams. That came to a head after my graduation and I knew I couldn’t stay as an academic my life. I needed to be out there. So I joined Starfleet that year and I’ve felt closer to my sister every day since.”

-LT. Quentin Q Dawson (CWO)

“Hmm. That I can believe. I was a doctor…well still am, but that is not my job anymore. After my wife died, something in me changed and I wanted more as well. We have something in common with that. I do understand where you parents were coming from but you have a desire to do more and be more. I do not think that that stims from your sisters death, but her death is the catalyst of that desire. I need everyone on this ship to be at their best and to do their best and I think I have made a good choice in selecting you. If I may get personal for a moment and you do not have to answer me. Did they find your sisters body? Because I have a clearance that is higher than most Captains and I have people in Section 31 that owe me favors. I can ask around if you want and when we are done here, we could visit the planet she was last on? Again, only if you want to.” His one light blue eye piercing at Quinten.

OOC: I figured some character development would be great if you wanted.

Captain Chris Taggart, CO

Q was stunned. Trying to swallow in a dry mouth, he found it hard to meet the captain’s gaze. His face which had once been so jovial and inviting held a serious intent and Q wondered if should dare to hope. He had spent years getting over the loss of his sister. Coming to terms with the reality that he would never know what happened to her. Never learn the truth. And now here stood the possibility of finally getting to those answers. But could he really risk those hopes being dashed again? Could he bear that disappointment? That frustration?
“N-none of the away team were recovered, sir,” He struggled to say, “Whatever happened to them on Coriolas III, no one ever said. They quarantined the planet and classified the entire mission. I don’t see how anyone could-” As he spoke, Q thought of the caves. The darkness that engulfed him. And then the face behind the light. He knew his sister would have done anything to know what happened to him. He had to know.
“Sir,” Q said meeting Taggart’s gaze, ” If you can find anything, anything at all, please do. I’ve waited sixteen years for answers. I need to know, sir.”

OOC: This is going to be fun. hehehe
-LT. Quentin Q Dawson (CWO)

Chris smiled as he got up putting his hand on Q’s shoulder and softly said, “You have my word Mr. Dawson. I happen to also work for a certain Section.” He moved over and picked up his coffee and took a sip and went to over to the window and looked out for a minute then turned back around. “Mr. Dawson. I can promise you information, I cannot promise you the truth. But if this goes as far as I think it would, then I think we can make a trip to explore. Providing we live through this current mission. OK?”

OOC: DO you want her and the crew to be alive still or what? We will go and look for them after this SIM. Just keep this written somewhere and remind me when we finish.

Captain Chris Taggart, CO

OOC: Honestly, either way, I’m sure it’ll prove very interesting. After this sim I’ll remind you and maybe we can work out some details.

IC: Dawson took a deep breath and joined the captain by the window. “Thank you, sir.” Was all he could manage. After sixteen years, he might finally have answers. As Dawson held out his hand again for the captain, he thought Here is a man I would serve to the end. Not just for Clarissa. This man inspired loyalty in his crew. He wasn’t just a man worth dying for, he was a man worth living for.

-LT. Quentin Q Dawson (CWO)

Not seeing the hand extended for a minute because it was on his blind side he turned to look at Quinten when he noticed the hand out. “You are very welcome Lieutenant. And again. Welcome aboard. We will find something. This ship is very unique in her tasks. You’ve come to the right place. Take some more of those French cookies with you before I get fat.” He said laughing a bit.
