The Captain’s Mast was a surprise. Kane figured on a full blown Court Martial, not that he cared. Loring had it coming for what he did, and given the opportunity he would do it again without hesitation. But thinking about it, a Court Martial left records - and records would not have been desirable in these circumstances for those who pulled what they did.

Kane now found himself in the brig, which was not a surprise. He reviewed the charges the Captain, whomever that was that was yelling at him, leveled against him: Conduct Unbecoming. Assaulting A Superior Officer (to which Kane’s response of “NO, SIR. Just a higher ranking one.” prompted an angry outburst from the aforementioned Captain and a stifled laugh from one of the Marines on guard in the room), Violation of Uniform Code, and Insubordination. Kane laughed at the last one and had replied “Apparently you haven’t read my service record, Sir.” Another outburst and then thirty days in the brig.

Kane leaned back in the cell he was in currently by himself, and sighed. “Well, here we are.” and he began singing (poorly) an old Earth song he learned years ago, “San Quentin” by a guy named Johnny Cash. It was about a prison, so Kane felt it appropriate.

Chris’s Captain’s Mast was last since he was the highest ranking officer being tried for assaulting Loring. His crimes were read aloud by the Captain. It wasn’t Chris’s captain but one on the station where they were docked and that smug Admiral was present. He will have final say Chris thought.

“For conduct unbecoming of a senior officer, disgracing your position as Executive Officer in front of not only your subordinates but your commanding officer as well, striking an officer of equal rank, enciting a riot, giving a subordinate permission to hit a senior level, command officer, putting the safety of your crew in danger when it was told to you that you would be shocked, and for general UCMJ articals, we hearby sentence you to 45 days confined in your ships brig. I would love to see you have gotten discharged and demoted but for some reason Commander Loring and the Admiral had other ideas.”

When the list of crimes were being read off Chris remembered the old Earth movie “Pirates of the Caribbean” where they were reading the charges and he smiled at one of them. Chris did the same thing about the riot charge.

The Captain continued. “If you’re done, what have you got to say for yourself Chris?”

“First off it’s Commander Taggart to you and secondly, nothing. I’d to it again in a heartbeat.”

Furious the Captain shouted, “Take him away and get him out of my sight!” Chris smirked as he was lead out in binders to the brig and put in a cell next to Kane, whom he has gotten close to over his time here. He listened to Kane sing.

“Nice song. Who sings it? Plus I’m glad I’m next to you. That was a sweet move you did back there man!”
