Walking down the corridor outside of his quarters, Jay was neither excited nor nervous. He had repeated this ritual dozens of times over the last five years and now just viewed it as a minor inconvenience more than anything else. As he walked through the doors to sickbay, he did a quick scan around the room to try and quickly assess the mood and overall feeling of the staff. Most, if not all seemed to be going about their routines in an efficient manner and some even seemed to be smiling. “This is a nice change,” he thought to himself. He made his way across the sickbay and stopped at the door to Dr. T’Aria’s office. He straightened his his uniform and made one last quick visual inspection to make sure everything was regulation and thought to himself, “Well, we might as well get this over with.” He reached up and pressed the chime.

T’Aria, a Vulcan whose precense was often seldom found within her office, happened to be situated behind a simple, Starfleer issue desk, her pale, auburn gaze studying data upon the monitor beside her. Sensitive ears caught the sound of the chime, as she rose her head in speculation of who it could be. Perhaps the Commander required the monthly reports? Or an Engineer had finally come to fix that malfunction with a few of their scanners? She didn’t dare assume either of these conclusions to be true. Brushing them away, the blonde (a rarity of her species) rose to her feet, straightening the medical blues that clad her athletic figure. “Come in.” Her voice was loud enough to be heard, but did not possess the same eullibence as some humans might have possessed, instead.

Reaching quickly for the door, Dr. Westland opened it and stepped inside. The site of the blond Vulcan standing in front of him caught him a little off guard as he had never seen a Vulcan with blond hair. He tried his best to hide it but was unsure if she had picked up on his slight hesitation. “Dr. T’Aria, he quickly said while snapping to attention, “Ensign Jay Westland reporting for duty.”

Ensign Jay Westland, MD.

It was a rare genetic mutation that had occured long before she was born, hence the pale nature of her gaze and blonde in her hair. T’Aria caught his hesitation, but only rose a brow at it. “I see,” Her voice was not completely flat, like many Vulcans. It held a calm accent, embracing a serene nature rather than a blunt, forceful one. “Please, have a seat, Ensign.”

T’Aria rose to her feet, proving to be no minute creature. “Do you wish anything to drink, Doctor?” She inquired.

“Thank you Commander,” he said taking the seat offered to him. “I wouldn’t mind a glass of water if that wouldn’t be too much trouble.”

“I am only a junior lieutenant, Doctor.” T’Aria informed, glancing over at him. Quirking an eyebrow, she headed for the replicator, retrieving a glass of water and Vulcan tea, for herself.

Jay knew very little, pretty much nothing, about Dr. T’Aria and was trying to look for little hints to her personality. He knew that sometimes he could come across as abrasive so he always tried to learn people’s personalities quickly so he could best figure out how to work with them most effectively.
He wondered how much Dr. T’Aria knew about his past.He had nothing to hide and was proud of all of his accomplishments, but sometimes people formed interesting opinions about him based on the information found in his service record.

OOC: Remember to sign off!! :)

IC: It was hard to tell much of the Vulcan. She was a woman of regality, a woman who did not allow the pettiness of emotions to shine through her somewhat chilling exterior. Very few knew the woman beneath the ice that danced across her features. To many, she was nothing more than an astute doctor, tending to any patient who required her assistance. This left the young woman as an enigma, a mystery many had not the ability to truly figure out. Thus, one might doubt Jay would be able to break into the true nature of Doctor T’Aria.

“I have reviewed your files, Ensign. You seem to have led a simple albeit notable life,” Her inflection did not change, her voice as monotonous as a robot.. Excluding the quiet calm. “Tell me. What are your capabilities.”

“I can’t believe you called her commander, Jay thought to himself, “What a stupid thing to do.” He didn’t feel like he was winning over any friends with his spectacular blunder.

“I assure you Lieutenant, I meant no disrespect or dishonor to you or your position. As far as my capabilities go, you can see from my file that I am certified in both general and emergency medicine as well as general and trauma surgery.” Jay started to speak.

“What is probably not in the file is my ability to remain focused and calm in almost any situation. As you can see, I have spent most of the last 5 years as an embedded doctor with several different ground Marine units. Not only did that experience teach me how to work in almost any situation, it also taught me to be creative when you have limited resources and to think out of the box very quickly. I am exceedingly proud of my success rate while in the field.” He continued, “I always put my patients first and I am their biggest advocate. Quite frankly, I think I can handle anything you might be able to throw at me on this ship, but if in some strange turn of events something does come up that I am not comfortable with, I won’t hesitate to ask for help.”

He suddenly became aware that he was sitting on the front edge of his chair. He took a sip of his water and eased back into the chair trying to look relaxed.

“Where had that come from?” he thought to himself. He came across a lot cockier than he ever had in the past when reporting for duty. He wasn’t quite sure why he felt like he needed to come across the way he did. He waited to see how Dr. T’Aria would respond.
