Chris wanted to meet and greet the JO’s of his ship and decided on having a big dinner provided by the Quartermaster/Mess crew. The meal will be homemade with favorite dishes from the not only the crews countries, states and worlds, but from their particular regions as well. That feat was easily accomplished by looking at their records.

Chris sent out emails to the crew via their PaDD’s and sent another one out to their Department Heads telling them to give them that night off. The message reads:

To: Junior Officer [Insert Rank and Name here]

As president of the Wardroom I do hearby cordially invite you to attend dinner with me and the Captain in the East Wardroom. Normally you would wear your Dress Whites but on the occasion I am allowing you all to come in casual clothing that is clean and in good taste.

When you enter you will ask permission from the president of the room, which is myself, even if the Captain is there. Once done I will grant you permission and you will enter and take a seat of your choice. Once everyone has arrived and is seated, then the fun begins.

There are a few rules to being there:
1. There is no rank there and you are free to
speak your minds.
2. There will be no talk about politics, sex, or
religion. Those talks don’t mix well with
having a good time.
3. There will be alcohol there and some from
your local regions. A nice taste of home. You
can consume as much as you want but be
warned. If you get too drunk or belligerent,
you will be asked to leave or be removed by
other means.
4. You can talk about your profession and even
tell me about new ideas and the like. This is
sometimes frowned upon in the Wardroom
but I am allowing it. I want to stress this as
much as I can. WHAT IS SAID IN HERE, STAYS
IN HERE! Except ideas that you ask me about.
I will ask that you bring up ideas that you
have already talked about with your DH’s. I
do not like going behind peoples backs.

So please come and if you don’t then there is no hard feelings. I have instructed your Department Heads to give you the night off and the next morning as well. I hope to see you all tomorrow night.

Commander Chris Taggart
President of Wardroom

XO

It wad the next night and Chris was wearing his IU sweater and designer jeans waiting at the table for the the people to arrive. He was already drinking rum and coke.

Chris

Kane arrived and was standing in the door when they slid open. He was wearing faded blue jeans and a dark gray hoodie that said said “NDFD” across the chest. The hoodie was discolored in spots and had a few small holes in it. His hair, as usual, was all over the place. Looking in he saw the XO and said, “This where we are supposed to be?”

Mwezi entered the room, dressed in Galdori casual wear, and for once, wearing his jewelry. Jewelry was an important part of Galdori culture, and consisted of a mixture of ear piercings and wrist and ankle bangles. He didn’t wear it on duty for obvious reasons, but when he was off duty socializing, it was a personal must. Other than that, he wore what looks somewhat similar to traditional Indian dress, with soft loose pants and a colourful overshirt that went down to his knees. There was a hole in the back for his tail, which wagged slightly as he entered the room.

Chris got up and went to the door and addressed Kane. “Yes it is and it is good to see you again my friend. Please come in and have a seat.” He was about to go further but he saw Mwezi. “Ah. Mwezi. So good to see you as well. Please have a seat. I’ve never seen you looking so dapper. Like a mafia boss. Looks good.”

Once they were both in the room Chris went back to his chair and sat down. “Please ask the valet what you would like to drink and he’ll get it. Oh, and Mwezi. While we were at your homeworld I took the liberty of stocking up on your various drinks and foods. They are here, ready and prepared just like at home. I sent a communique to Kula and she gave instructions on how certain dishes were supposed to be cooked. I hope that was ok with you and I hope even more that you’ll like it.”

Once all that was our of the way Chris continued. “So. Is there anything that you fine gents want to talk about?”

Chris

The Laleri couldn’t help that his emotions showed in his tail, and the mention of Kula made his tail wag even more than it had when he entered the room. “Thank you, Commander,” he said politely, dipping his head in respect. He let his gaze briefly flit over the rest of the room, and ordered a water from the valet. He could handle alcohol - a lot more than a Raka could, at least, but he had never really enjoyed drinking it.

Kane took a seat as directed and looked at the valet. He made space between his thumb and forefinger, said “A whiskey.” and then narrowed the gap slightly and added “And a whiskey.” He then looked at Mwezi. “Well don’t you clean up good.” he said. One may have expected a smile, but Kane’s face retained it’s trademark scowl partially hidden by strands of hair.

Kane, Tac / Med

Mwezi nodded slightly. “Earrings and bangles of this sort are important to my culture. But to explain it I would have to get into religion, and I believe the rules specified no talk of religion,” he said with a small grin. He was looking forward to seeing what exactly the commander had brought from Galdor. It would be interesting to see how badly or how well he had managed to cook the “gourds.” Few offworlders had ever heard of a plant like the gourds, but they were a staple on many Laleri and Hatriku tables.

Mwezi relaxed slightly. “You have not … cleaned up good, as you say,” he commented to Kane, noting the messy hair and the shirt full of holes. “When I read clean and in good taste, I assumed… well,” he gestured to his own apparel. “Something one might wear to a family gathering.”

Mwezi

Kane looked at the Security officer without expression. “This is what I wear to family gatherings.” he said flatly. The truth was that Kane had never been to a family gathering in his entire life. The closest thing to that for him would have been dinner in the fire-house back in New Detroit. And what he wore now was exactly what he wore then… but cleaner.

Kane, Tac / Med

“You know what I meant,” Mwezi huffed slightly, tapping the small device on his wrist that translated his words into English for the rest of the crew. Perhaps it hadn’t translated properly? He let out a small breath. Ah, well… it didn’t really matter.

He could understand English perfectly, but speaking it came with some difficulty. His mouth simply wasn’t made to pronounce all the English sounds, and it always sounded like he was speaking with a horrid accent every time he tried. So he’d just fallen back to using the Universal Remote Interface that some Arwan scientists had designed. It automatically translated and narrated his speech into English.

Mwezi

Kane’s expression didn’t change, but he said “Yeah. I guess your definition of ‘clean and good taste’ and mine differ a bit,” and at that point the valet arrived with Kane’s drink. “To ya.” he said and, without waiting for a response, took a long drink.

Kane, Tac / Med

Chris raised his drink and drank with Kane then put the glass down. “Mwezi. You can explain your jewelry to us. It is not technically soaking about religion. You are just explaining to us way they are and what role they play in your culture. What I meant about taking about religion is for two or more people yelling at each other about who’s god is better. I don’t like that.”

Chris

Kane chuckled. “That usually ends up with me working on whoever’s ‘god’ lost that particular argument.”

Kane, Tac / Med

“Ah,” he said with a light chuckle. “I have no need to tell others that my gods are better than theirs,” he assured those present. “The Galdori have an afterlife which is reserved for only my people. When we die, Va’al gathers our souls and brings them to the dark moon. Other gods are for other races, and are better for them than the gods of Galdor would be,” he grinned slightly, then sobered himself.

“The jewelry is… It’s traditional. A child gets their first piercing at the age of five, when they participate in their first ceremonial dance. The bangles on my wrist represent the passage of Enris around the planet, and also represent the years of our lives. The number of bangles shows how many significant events you have had in your life, each one representative of a particular event. Somewhat like the golden rings you place on your hands when you marry,” he explained.

He lifted his leg slightly to show the woven twine that wrapped intricately around his left shin. “The twists and patterns in this anklet represent the members of my family,” he added. And my earrings are specific to the gods that I worship among the eleven that we follow”

Mwezi

OOC: just pasting in Kane’s comment since I accidentally split the thread!

“Those are impressive endornments. And you painted a great picture of how they are important. Thank you for sharing Mwezi.”

He finished his rum and beckoned for the porter to get him a refill. He looked at them both. “I’m going to break from tradition for a moment. I would like your thoughts on how tasks that you do or have seen since you’ve been onboard can be made better. I’m not looking to get into a hissy over how certain people are lazy and the like. I also don’t want complaining. I want a problem presented with ideas and or viable solutions. Let’s here some.”

Chris

Kane spoke up immediately while waving at the porter for another round. “Emergency Medical services are slow to respond. Well, slower than they should be. If we staged EMS kits in secure lockers in specific areas around the ship, Medical wouldn’t have to go to Sickbay to retrieve supplies before responding. It would save minutes on response time.”

Kane, Tac / Med

“Done! Damn good idea. Every second counts. Get with the CMO and make up a list that will be stationed at each locker. I want them standardized so the responders know exactly what is there. Then I want you to spearhead the project. It will be a good bullet on your annual review for promotion.” Chris looked around the table again. “Next.”

Chris

Mwezi thought for a moment. “Perhaps more varied combat training might benefit the crew. And not just the Security crew, but other personell. I think that everyone would benefit from training in self defense and martial arts,” he suggested. It was not so much a problem as it was a possibility for improving something that was already good.

Mwezi

“That’s another good idea. You haven’t been trained in Starfleet hand to hand but you have on your planet. Get with Lt. Stone and try to mix the two and plan on a five day class in Self Defense once every three months. Anything else?”

Chris

Jay normally tried to stay away from social gathering like these, but since he was new to the ship, he thought it would be a good way to get to know some people. Besides, hopefully someone picked up on his Irish-American heritage and managed to have some Guinness on hand. He took one last look in the mirror just to make sure everything looked acceptable. He was not vain by any means, but he did want to look presentable. He felt like the polo and jeans he was wearing would be acceptable. He made his way to the Wardroom and took a deep breath as the doors slid open. Walking in he addressed the group, “Hi everyone. I am Ensign Jay Westland and I was just assigned to the Chernov as the newest member of the medical staff.”
