Nurse Zhang winked to Pawl, showing him that she understood him.

“Very good,” said Kastarak. “I will send you an appointment through your PaDD. I find you fit for duty, and this will be communicated to the appropriate staff. Welcome on board! Is there anything you would like to ask me or Nurse Zhang?”

” No Doctor! I believe we covered everything.” Pawl said calmly to them. “Unless there is something more you wish to discuss?” Pawl added quickly as he got up off the biobed and slowly moved to the doors of sickbay.

“Not at all,” replied Kastarak. “You are dismissed. But before you go, allow me to once again welcome you on board the Chernov. Good-bye, Mr Batario.”

After Mr Batario had left, Kastarak went to his office for the appropriate paperwork.

“Computer,” he paused, “dictate in lieutenant (junior grade) Pawl Batario’s medical records, stardate 2271.XX [ OOC: whatever day 1 is for Batario’s service ].

Pawl Batario underwent physico-medical and psychological exams today, upon starting service upon the USS Chernov. Nurse Zhang Jingjing assisted in the physico-medical exam. In summary, I have deemed Pawl Batario fit for duty, from the physico-medical and psychological points of view.

Regarding the physico-medical exam, the standard tests for a Betazoid male were applied. I will now discuss only the matters deviating from normal parameters.

A simple rating of body mass index indicated a score of 29.3, with weight at 95.2 kilograms and height at 180 centimetres. While about 4.8 kilograms higher than the normative figures, the higher weight is attributed to a higher-than-average musculature for Pawl Batario’s gender and species. Accordingly, I deem his weight and body–mass index as non-concerning.

Moreover, his psilosynine levels were higher than normal. From discussion with Mr Batario, the most likely cause of explanation is that he had not depleted the chemicals by not using the parapsychological senses for a time. This is in line with literature.

Overall, his physical condition is good. He had been healthy his entire life, having experienced the Betazoid flu once. He has no chronic conditions, allergies, and no somatic health concerns.

Regarding the psychological status of Pawl Batario: Mr Batario appeared friendly, polite, though also nervous and somewhat apprehensive and restless. Facial expressions, turn-taking, without comment. He spoke of the effects of conflict in the nuclear and extended families that have affected him. He has self-diagnosed himself with mild depression, a diagnosis with which I am inclined to agree. He appears to have high capabilities of mentalization, even without using his parapsychological or telepathic senses, which are protective factors for him. There is no indication of suicidal, manic or psychotic thought patterns. He appears emotionally regulated within normal parameters for his species, gender, and age. There is, however, concern relating to his on-boarding experience. The current mild depression might be worsened by the transition from a different locale to this one. He has no friends or acquaintances already established on the ship. A protective factor is that he is sociable and empathetic. That said, he and I have agreed to see each other for a follow-up meeting with the focus on his psychological health one fortnight from now. I have instructed him to come earlier if he notices a worsening of his depressive symptoms.

As such, I have found no reason that would make him unfit for duty from a medical or psychological point of view. I will now communicate this to his department head and the first officer. End log.“

Kastarak stood up, filled a glass with water. Still standing, he continued dictating to the computer.

“Computer, send the following missive to the First Officer and the Chief Engineer. This is Kastarak, physician and counsellor. I have today performed a physico-medical examination and a psychological examination regarding the question of fitness of duty of Lieutenant, junior grade, Pawl Batario, on his first day on board the Chernov. I have found him fit for duty on both points. He may therefore be assigned tasks on board the ship. Kastarak out.“

He then left his office, and met with a smiling Nurse Zhang. She invited him to join her for dinner after their shift would end in forty minutes, and Kastarak agreed.

T’Aria tore her gaze from the viewscreen when a familiar ping! touched her ears. Leaning forward, she tugged the PaDD from its perch and pulled up the missive. She scanned Doctor Kastarak’s words for those that applied most directly to Batario: fit for duty. Once found, she tapped the response box and entered a brief:

Doctor Kastarak,

Your assessment of Lieutenant (j.g.) Pawl Batario’s fitness is accepted and documented.

Thank you for your time, Doctor.
