After several days of working, and finally (!) after having fully recovered from that Romulan flu, Kastarak was well overdue a work out. He knew that he had to take it easier than usual. He had already lost some 3 kg from a lack of appetite during his flu, and his stamina was likely to have become worse.

As such, Kastarak decided on a light warm-up and stretch before he would go for some push-and-pull strength exercises. Wearing his gym clothes – yellow shorts, and a pink t-shirt and orange running shoes (clothes were chosen out of comfort, not looks, as was logical…) – he began a jog on a simulator treadmill. It was a curious apparatus. Covering his eyes with what looked like swimming goggles, as he ran, he was somewhere else. He had to be sure not to turn in various directions, lest he’d likely fall.

Today, he decided on running through the gardens outside P’Jem monastery. Kastarak had still to visit that monastery – one of the few relics outside the destroyed Vulcan homeworld that still felt like Vulcan (except for the lush vegetation and blue, blue skies). Kastarak ran along the monastery gardens, hearing the birds, and watching Andorian tourists take selfies. Ah yes, Kastarak’s thoughts wandered, this planet was contested by both Vulcan and Andoria, and was where Andorians and Humans shared their first contact of one another. It was a historical environment to exercise in. Of course, it would be inappropriate to run around that site, should he ever visit it. He would have to take care to respect the sanctity and history of the environment, take in the sounds, smells and visuals of the area, as well as taste the air. Each planet’s air had a different taste. He wondered what the flavour of P’Jem would be.

Suddenly a beautiful bird flew past, and Kastarak mindlessly looked towards it, to see more of its multicoloured plume. And he fell.

Even though the treadmill stopped automatically, Kastarak hit his head on a protective beam along the treadmill, forcing the goggles off him, and he started bleeding.

The last thought he had was that the green bloodstains on his pink shirt made a curious pattern. It reminded him of Earth nightclub fashion....

Kastarak passed out. Lying unconscious on the cold floor, he was still bleeding – not much, but enough for the scene to look a lot more gruesome than it was.

– Ensign/Dr Kastarak

Umbri had just finished their morning swim when they spotted their former roommate, Kastarak, lying unconscious on the floor next to one of the simulator treadmills. It looked like there was blood as well. They immediately ran over to the Ensign, checked his pulse, and went to the nearest Comm Station:

[O] Sickbay, this is Lt Umbri Zayne. I just found Ensign Kastarak unconscious in the gym. He appears to have hit his head and needs immediate medical attention. [O]

Lieutenant (j.g.) Umbri Zayne, Weapons Officer

There was an immediate response, [O] Sickbay here, Nurse Sutalo speaking.[O].

While Umbri described the nature of the medical emergency, Kastarak woke up. He looked pale, with a slight greenish hue. He did not look good.

“Um-Umbri…?” he stuttered softly. “What happened?”

– Ens/Dr Kastarak

Umbri rushed over to Kastarak once they heard him. “Kastarak! Just stay awake for me. Help is on the way. You seemed to have hit your head on one of the simulator treadmills and passed out,” they said.

Lieutenant (j.g.) Umbri Zayne, Weapons Officer

Kastarak was in pain. His head pulsated, and nociceptors apparently existed in parts of his head and skull he had never considered them to exist before. Rationally, they would exist there, his thoughts went, but he was surprised that that particular place could cause pain. It was interesting, yet not an experience he would like to explore more.

He tried speaking once more. It was hard finding words. And after finding them, he had to try and move his mouth and larynx and lips and tongue and veerything to make them understandable to Umbri. It felt like such a struggle.

There was a comfort in Umbri’s words, help is on the way. He was safe. His friend was here. They’d ensure everything in their power that Kastarak would be OK. He sighed, this time it was a sigh of relief.

Kastarak understood what had happened. Help was on the way, and then suddenly, a fear came upon him. What if he’d be left alone before help would come?

“Don’t go,” he said. It sounded more pleading than he intended, but it was probably an accurate reflexion of his cognitive and emotional states.

– Ensign Kastarak (physician, off duty… for obvious reasons)

Umbri was admittedly caught off guard when they heard Kastarak’s plea. They didn’t expect that much emotion to come from him. But knowing that their brain and emotions were likely scrambled due to the head trauma, it made sense. Seeing that Kastarak was obviously in a lot of pain, Umbri took one of his hands in theirs and started rubbing small circles into it. “Don’t worry, Kastarak. I’m not going anywhere,” they said.

Kastarak felt at peace hearing Umbri say they’re not going anywhere. All would be well. He closed his eyes, felt an urge to sleep, but remembered both Umbri’s plea with him, and some of his medical training, that he should absolutely not lose consciousness now. Even if sleep felt like a sweet release from the pain.

He had never experienced anything like this. Not even when he did martial arts. He had always been careful practising how to fall safely, and he ensured always to protect his head and vital organs.

“That you stay,” he said, and moaned quietly for a second, “brings peace to me.”

By that, Nurse Sutalo and Dr K’Laff (a Caitian crewmember – not a commissioned officer, apparently she is on an exchange mission from her home hospital) came running.

“Okay, boss,” said Sutalo, kneeling in front of Kastarak on the floor. “We’ve got you. Dr K’Laff and I are just gonna scan you a bit, and then we’ll take you to Sickbay.”

Sutalo turned to Umbri.

“Lieutenant Zayne, I presume? We spoke over the intercom. Would you help us lifting Kastarak up the stretcher?”

It was an anti-gravitation stretcher, so it sort of bounced off gravity, seemingly floating in the air once applied. But now it was offline, lying on the floor. They still needed to get Kastarak to it. He was not a lightweight, almost 100 kg and 2 metres. Sutalo was not a strong man, and Dr K’Laff was, according to her own words, tiny. It’d be a struggle. A third set of hands and arms would be helpful.

Umbri nodded, standing up. “Where do you need me to lift?” they asked.
