The Cardassian leader led Taggart through a few halls until they made it to an observation room. The circular windows looking out onto empty space. Except the space wasn’t quite so empty. The debris of the Chernov’s hull and nacelle were clearly visible along with the floating corpses. The spectacle could have been a planned area to park the ship, but the debris was pretty much everywhere due to the major explosion from the engines.

Chris’s heart sank as he saw the wreckage outside. But he steeled himself and showed only a second of sorrow before looking at the Cardassian officer again.

A table with a few chairs and a bottle sat upon it waited for them as they entered. The Cardassian leader sat and poured himself a glass of the substance before swishing it like a wine connoisseur in its glass before shooting it back and offering Taggert a seat and drink. “Please do sit and let us talk. Have a glass of Kanar. It should help process any feelings of distrust. I believe we have much to discuss.”

Chris nodded. “I believe we do Captain…or what is your name and rank by the way? I am Chris Taggart, Executive Officer of the USS Chernov…or what’s left of it.” He said as he sat down and took the glass offered to him. He smelled it and took a sip before talking a nice drink from it. He coughed a little afterwards but was thankful for the drink and hospitality.

“My name is Gakar. My rank is a bit unimportant now, given the circumstances.” He poured himself another glassful of Kanar, “Our government is run in two forms. There is the military and then there is a more VmCivilian run side of things. Needless to say the military ship commanders can be a little....excessive.” He nodded towards the other man with a gentle smile. “I do hope the tooth thing isn’t bothering you too much. We would give medication to ease the pains but are unsure if it would not react badly with your physiology. Where did you say you were from?”

“Pleased to meet you Gakar. My pain is still there but this drink helps. Thank you for the offer.” He noticed the smile. “Excessive huh. Firing upon a ship you knew nothing about and kidnapping some of its crew, while simultaneously blowing up the rest of the vessel. No. That’s not excessive at all.” He took another drink.

Gakar frowned, “I am afraid I dont have much control over the Gul’s actions where the ship is involved. I do, however control what happens to our Citizenry though.”

“We could have had a dialog and helped each other out in many ways. But now the Federation will brand you as evil for blowing up one of their ships and killing almost the entire crew. And now what is left of the crew are now being made into Cardassian citizens. Taking away what we had left. What does it mean to be a Cardassian citizen? What rights do we have now?” Waiting for the answer he drank the rest of the drink and frowned at the empty cup before going on.

“You asked where I come from earlier. Do you mean me personally or the ship? I’ll answer both. I come from a planet in the Alpha Sector called Earth. Their our government is and it is called The Federation of United Planets. Or Federation for short. Many worlds have joined them in peacekeeping efforts. That is why, the second part of this, is why there are so many different species on the ship that you just destroyed. And yes, the ship came from Earth as well. Anymore questions? Oh and could I get a refill please. This stuff is actually pretty good.”

The Cardassian man smiles gently again and ordered another bottle of Kanar to be brought. “Cardassian citizens are given their rights as long as they follow the laws and follow the orders of the government. Otherwise they are stripped of these rights as fugitives from justice. The main rights have to do with fair and due process for citizens. Including trials and representation. The secondary rights are freedom to pursue happiness as long as it does not harm the government. I would recommend accepting the generous offer of citizenship.” He frowned, “We really hate turning over illegals to the military. They enjoy using a slavery caste to do manual labors.”

“Well. When you put it that way…wait a minute. You’re not the military? Are you the government then or some crazy that got ahold of a ship and is trying to restore his planet back to its former glory?”

He put his cup out to be refilled and took a drink. “Plus if we become citizens then how will we be treated once we get back to the home world? I’m guessing we’re not going to be allowed to purchase houses and hold jobs?”

Gakar sipped from his glass. “In order of questions first. I am not military myself. I am ranking official designated to....curb…some of the military policies on ships. And your rights on the homeworld would be doled out by officials higher than myself. I can only grant you a citizenship under the current circumstances. After all. Your species is new to us and we are a very curious race.”
