Once they got him into Sickbay, Kane would be able to attempt diagnosis and look for some temporary treatment for Mwezi to tide him over until they got him home.

Mwezi, CTO

Having moved the big wolf-man to a biobed, Kane began running scans and comparing them to Mwezi’s most recent. The scans reveled a high level of oxytocin… but that didn’t explain the symptoms. Further scans then showed a huge spike in monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A). Kane scowled… well, more so than normal. He looked at Mwezi and said “You hang out here, Warren. I gotta go figure out why your brain is being wonky.” and he put a hand on the lupine officer’s shoulder and walked to his office.

Inside, he sat down and pulled up the Galdori Medical Database. It wasn’t as extensive as it could be, but it did have some information. It took about thirty minutes before Kane said “Well, sunofab…” and he stood up and looked at the screen again and then walked out and back to Mwezi.

The staff had tried to make him as comfortable as they could in the intervening time, and Kane reviewed everything before setting half of his butt on the bio bed next to Mwezi and looked down at him, hair cascading down across his face. “So… you and this fiancé of yours… I’m guessing that this wasn’t a shotgun wedding, was it?” He motioned a nurse over and handed her a PaDD. “10cc’s to start, then five every hour.” She nodded and went to the med locker and began prepping whatever Kane had given her.

Kane, CMO

Although he had been drifting in and out of consciousness while Kane was researching, Mwezi happened to be awake due to a spike of pain a few minutes previously. When Kane came over with the treatment plan. “Shotgun… wedding?” he asked, squinting at Kane. “What does a projectile weapon have to do with being married?” He put a hand to his forehead and grunted unhappily. “Whatever that is, we’re not married yet. We won’t be until I complete my tour of duty.”

“Unless I get your hormonal imbalance handled, you won’t be completing s&^t.” Kane said flatly. “ ‘Empathic Withdrawal Syndrome’ is what your people call it. Because you are so close to whoever you are close to, your brain takes the absence of their presence and amplifies it by producing hormonal… you know what? Short answer: Warren, your brain is throwing a temper tantrum because your boo ain’t around.” he said sarcastically. The nurse came back with a hypo. Kane checked it and then looked at Mwezi. “So you’re gonna have to take regular doses of this little cocktail until we get you close enough to them that your brain decides its okay. Got it?” and he pressed the hypo through the fur and onto the skin and activated it. A soft pop followed by a short hisss and he pulled the device away.

“There. The headache should go away in a minute or two. But whatever it is you Galdorians have connecting you to each other, it doesn’t like something. So a dose every three hours or you’ll go down like a bag of hammers again. Got it, Warren?”

“That doesn’t…” Mwezi stammered, trying to sit up, his eyes wide as he recognized the name. “I know… that’s…” he shook his head, struggling to compute the situation. He’d mentioned it to Bridie once before, how his species’ development was different from that of most species, but he struggled in this moment to communicate this to the doctor. “How can I have EWS, I’m not-” suddenly the Universal Translator seemed to struggle, causing Mwezi to pause as whatever he’d said hadn’t translated.

After a moment, he tried again to communicate, calming down slightly as the pain in his head faded away, the drugs doing their job. “Only ‘adults’ with fully developed sexes can have EWS. You have to have… I’m not fully developed…” he tried to explain, putting a hand on Kane’s arm and looking at him with extreme confusion on his face. “Doc. It doesn’t make sense. I’m not mated… I’m not even Mature. By all rights, it should be impossible for me to be experiencing Empathic Withdrawal.”

He pulled away and pulled his legs onto the bed. “It should be impossible, and yet… I don’t know how this is happening, Doc.”
