SNIP

They looked at each other and smiled, then turned back to her. “Is he good at what he does? Does he… um… do you think it fulfills him?” Donna asked softly.

Tenkiller

She looked across the expanse where she could occasionally catch a glimpse of him. She thought for a moment, then nodded. “He is very good at what he does. He cares for the ship and its crew. He’d give his life for them if it came to it.” She lookedat them. “My planet was lost to a celestial event. At least, that’s what we’ve been lead to believe. I didn’t believe that. And I have been working on trying to figure out the true reason for what happened. And he has been amazing with seeing to it that I not only have that opportunity, but also that I am safe while doing it.” She looked Ten’s direction and nodded. “As to fulfillment… I believe it does.”

Toveka

Donna looked at Toveka and smiled wickedly. “So… how long have you and my son been a couple, Toveka? Long enough to think about the future, hmm?” she asked with feigned innocence. “Donna!” Cecil admonished. “Leave the girl be.” and he reached over and patted her leg. “Dont mind her, she’s just in a rush for grandkids.” he said with slight smile.

To his credit, Tenkiller wasnt fairing much better. A full gaggle of Osage youth had corralled him and were asking rapid fire questions about space, Star Fleet, aliens, space stations, and every weird pre-and- adolescent question that they could. Orion females were a particularly popular subject. Charles answered as honestly and quickly as he could, steering away from the last topic entirely. And then came the question: “Hey Mr. Tenkiller! You gonna marry that there alien woman?” Charles stopped and said “Aw, c’mon now… my mom tell you to ask me that, Gideon Goodeagle? This is our second date. Save that talk for a year, will ya?”

Tenkiller

Toveka blanched. Thankfully her coloring kept her from ghosting white like more humans. “Um… no ma’am. Not long enough to discuss the future. Actually other than a couple professional meetings, Ten and I have only had one date.” She looked embarrassed to confess it and hoped that bringing a stranger to a family function wasn’t something they frowned upon. Toveka wasn’t sure the occasion, but the fact that more than one person was dressed in tribe regalia made her think this wasn’t a simple family picnic just to see Tenkiller.

The reassurance from the Dad helped a bit and she nodded. “I can understand her desire to know. But I cannot give answers where I have none.” She tried to smile at them both. “I am sorry.” Moving to take to her feet, she nodded. “Perhaps I should help with the lemonade?”

“Sit down, girl. He’s a grown man… he can fetch a glass of lemonade.” Donna said with a grin and actually yanked her back down. Cecil shook his head and said “Toveka, why dont you tell us a bit about yourself. We have a bit till the ceremony starts; and we’d love to get to know you better. After all, we cant remember the last time we had an off-worlder at one of the dances.”

Tenkiller

Toveka actually grunted as she was tugged off balance and landed back on the blanket. She frowned a moment and looked over at Ten. He had a large cluster of people around him and she was realizing that they were perhaps both in the same predicament. She almost felt sorry for him.

As she resettled herself, she shook her head. “I’m not sure what there is to tell, to be honest, Sir. I was born on Romulous, which has since been destroyed. I was in the Academy when it happened.” She took a deep breath and steeled herself. “My father was part of the local Council. My mother, the perfect wife. I actually went to the Academy to do Security.” She looked towards Ten once more. He would have been her supervisor. Would things have been different then?

She glanced back at the two with her. “When Romulous was destroyed, I switched to science to give me the skills I need to try and figure out what happened.” She fell silent and wondered what else there was of her to even tell. She sat with her mind silent for a moment. She suddenly realized she was boring in comparison to many she knew. She knew what she saw in Ten… what did he see in her?

They looked at her and Donna said “Honey. I didnt ask for your resume. I asked about you. There is more to Toveka than her job, I think. So tell us about that.” She smiled at Toveka and waited patiently.

Toveka frowned this time. “That is me. I spend my free time studying the information I get from the debris field. And my worktime doing Federation projects or working on the same thing I do on my off time.” It sounded so boring, so mundane. And yet there was nothing more she could think of to tell about herself. Then a single thought came to mind. “I enjoy desserts.” she added at the end. It was so simply ‘matter of fact’ it almost didn’t count as more than an exhale and a murmur.

Toveka

Donna grinned and said “Making or eating? I love both.” and she laughed loudly. “Oh me oh my yes I do…” and she laughed some more. “What do you like best? Oh and bet you have some amazing recipies, dont you? Oh, we absolutely have to trade. I have a few dishes that if you cooked for Charlie… OH MY STOKES! He’d be on you faster than a bobcat on venison steak!” and she cackled so loud she fell over laughing.

Cecil looked at her and smiled broadly. “Woman, you are crazy. You know that?” and he chuckled as he watched her laugh.

Tenkiller(s)

She smiled slightly as the woman suddenly became ridiculously animated. “I prefer eating. I can cook, but I am not very good at it.” When she mentioned Ten jumping her like an animal, she actually tensed up and swallowed with embarrassment.

Toveka

Cecil noted the reaction and suppressed a smile and just said “Donna, dear… leave her alone. Just for that, you have to give her your cobbler recipie.” and he looked at Toveka and said softly “Its his favorite.”

“What is, Pa?” Tenkiller said as he came up behind them, drink carrier in hand. He handed clear cups to everyone, each filled with a yellow liquid and fresh strawberries and ice. Looking at Toveka and his mom laughing, he said “Sorry. Haven’t been home in a bit, so there were questions… lots of questions.” and he smiled at her. “Hey, you’re a scientist. There are about two dozen twelve year old boys over there with tons of questions about Orion females. Maybe you wanna head over and answer those, rather than whatever my mom said that has her so tickled?” he asked with a grin.

Tenkiller

“Of course,” she said taking the glass and his offered hand to stand up. “Forgive me. Better I answer them than they make things up, I’m sure.” She was a quick learner.

She nodded to both the parents, stifled the urge to touch Ten and turned to head towards the group of boys now gaping at her.
