This was not the day Chloe expected. It never was in medical. Life was like a light switch that switched moments on and off. So much of the time one sat around waiting for things to happen. You could stock shelves, wipe counters, call back patients, or inject the person that rolled in once an hour with a hypo treating whatever common ailment they presented with at the moment. These were not the moments however that made one wonder if this was the correct path for them in life. The moments that did were the ones where your finger was lodged in the puncture wound of an individual surrounded by all eyes staring at you to fix the situation like Chloe was experiencing now.The hum of the ventilator system’s white noise was now replaced by the cacophony of voices. Each voice was a question, a comment, or a demand yet Chloe could not separate them out individually. “I need help,” she yelled out for anyone in sickbay to respond. Only in extreme cases was one beamed directly into sickbay which is how Ensign Jones arrived. The red stain of blood pooling under the biobed in long steady drips lead a trail back to the large spot where Jones and the four other engineers had materialized. Closing her eyes Chloe took a deep breath remembering back to Cestus where she learned real medical instead of the tricorder and lollipop medical she doled out here. She could feel Jones’ pulse slowing slightly indicating he was bleeding out. Chloe didn’t need to look down at her finger plugging the hole trying to stem the tide of crimson liquid pumping rhythmically from his body. She could feel the warm rush with each beat of this slowing heart.
Stifling curses under her breath that the men in engineering had reacted by pulling out the pipe that had impaled Jones’ lower abdomen, she shouted out again. “I need help now,” Chloe yelled sharply before trying to take a calming tone with the patient. Right now there was nothing she could do. If she removed her hand, Jones would bleed out. If she waited much longer he would die anyway. All Chloe could do was wait for help.

Paige came over “What’s going on?” She asked taking in the scene before her. She grabbed a auto suture “What happened here?” Paige demanded.

Seconds later, Harry Arrived and asked the same “we need to stop this bleeding, find out where it exactly it’s coming from” he said before he grabbed Chloes hand, moving it and applying a heavy amount of pressure to the wound

Blood spurted out from the puncture wound like a pump sending thickened, dark pulses of fluid against the palm of Dr. McKinley. It was hot and began to seep instantly between his fingers. “From what I can tell its a gastrointestinal perforation involving the celiac artery,” Chloe reported pushing a lock of hair off her face with the back of her hand. “It would explain why his BP is continuing to drop. There may be some involvement of the diaphragm explaining the dark color due to deoxygenation of the blood,” she reported rapidly as she grabbed a dermal suture and some surgical clamps. Chloe looked at the new doctor and paused only to receive directions from him on how he wanted to proceed in treating the patient. Chloe had been a nurse long enough to know that her job was to assist the doctor and not suggest she was ready to treat the patient. That was a lesson she learned the hard way on Cestus. Being six months pregnant she angled herself to manage being as close as needed but not let her belly interfere with access to the patient.

“OK, start suturing the wound” Harry said as he remained pressing pressure on the wound. It was an old technique but worked to slow the bleeding enough to allow measures to be taken to stop the bleeding. As the blood pressed through his fingers he applied more pressure, being careful not to make any problem worse “We need to stop the bleeding and get some Dexalin in his system, do we know how it happened” he asked wondering how the terrible wound happened, would security need to be involved, he wasn’t 100% on the procedures for that on this new station.
Dr McKInley
Chloe paused a hairsbreadth of a second before immediately obeying McKinley. “Kavonne I need ten cc’s of Dexalin,” Chloe repeated McKinley’s command to another nurse so that he could focus on the patient and not have to repeat himself. “Also have 50 mg of Morathial and two 500-mL of Hemolog at the ready,” she added to the request for dexalin. She wasn’t sure the other drugs were needed but it made since to have them at the ready to treat the probable neural metaphasic shock of low blood pressure and hemolog to replace the loss of blood. Taking the Dexalin hypo, Chloe pressed it to the patient’s neck. She then immediately started to suture the wound. Normally this would not be her job however from what Chloe could tell if McKinley removed the pressure the patient would bleed out. She had performed this procedure in her sleep on Cestus and in emergency rooms when the situation was extreme like now. Closing off the artery she looked up at McKinley hoping her work was what he had expected.

Once the sutures had been finished, Harry removed his hand from the wound. He grimaced as he did, having placed a lot of pressure on the would was a little difficult to just snap out of. He took a look at the nurses work, it was quite good, probably not the way Harry himself would have done it but it looked to be holding. “The Dexalin will help elevate the oxygen levels in the blood, in about 10 minutes lets also give him 15ml of Inaprovaline, that will help with any of the minor bleeding he may have.” Harry said as he stretched out his hand a little, he took out a tricorder and began scanning the patient further, looking for any other issues the patient had, he was a little concerned at how quickly the patient’s oxygen levels had dropped
Dr McKinley
“Yes sir,” she replied and then called out, “Can I get 15 ml of Inaprovaline ready,” Chloe parroted the doctor’s request before letting out a small chuckle as another nurse repeated the command back of 15 m of Inaprovaline. “I always feel like we are in a cave. Imaprovaline…Inaprovaline…Inaprovaline,” she said softer and softer as if it was an echo.” Repeating commands and orders in an emergency situation helped assure everyone what was being done and how fast. The clink of the hypo of Inaprovaline on the metal tray next to her served almost as a punctuation mark to the end of McKinley’s sentence. Setting a timer, Chloe held it at the ready along with the 50 mg of Morathial and two 500-mL of Hemolog if McKinley requested them.
“How is your hand,” she asked stealing a glance at McKinley as he tended the patient. It was not uncommon for doctors to injure themselves tending to patients. People thought doctors were indestructible but neck strains, eye strains, back injures were all common ailments of the trade. It was not like most doctors remembered to bend at the knees when lifting a patient in an emergency situation. Doctors just jumped in and did what was needed. Chloe wasn’t sure if it was a chronic injury or if McKinley had just gotten stiff as he tried to use this hands as a human tourniquet to save this patient’s life.

Paige simply stood back and watched her team work. They were doing fine and had gotten the bleeding stopped. She would let the Nurse deal with McKinley’s hand as she walked off to check on the other patients in Sickbay.
