Main Sim - Science gets down to brass tacks

Toveka frowned a moment in thought. “The probe would have to have the simulated brain matter in it. Perhaps we can get a sample from the Klingon and replicate his brain signature. At least for the probe’s identification, anyway. Then we’d have to find out at what ‘frequency’ or chemical signature the probe activates. If it’s something like stress, or death, or even cardiac arrest, we need to know how to activate it. Though I’m guessing, now that I think about it, that death doesn’t do it or the chip would have phased once it was disconnected from the host. Essentially reading the lack of input as ‘death’.”

She was rambling, but it was thinking out loud and she wasn’t even half aware she was doing it.

Baldur smirked slightly, scientists always had the most wonderful enthusiasm when struggling with a new problem, it was positively infectious “Well I think that calls for experimentation. That is unless you feel it would prove a security risk to the Station?” he said in a questioning tone.

Soo - Baldur

She nodded. “Actually I think we need to see what the emergency is about. That klaxon outside the room is driving me to distraction. I’m just glad I can silence it in here.” When the alarms had sounded less than ten minutes ago, she had automatically locked down science. Now that the sim was done they had been running before the sound, she could safely remove it. “First, we need to see what the chaos is about. Then we will worry about the probe. We will need to get a sample of the Klingon’s DNA to replicate the brain matter so it has his signature.” She turned back around and shook her head. “The other question isn’t just how to find out when and where it came from, but why it’s here.” She squatted down to open the cabinet under the console and seek out a container to lock the chip up in so they could look at it later.

Baldur had been so engrossed in the work that he had completely ignored the alarm originally. He tapped a nearby console to bring up the station status report to see what was going on. His eyes narrowed as he saw a security alert for outside what seemed to be a brewery. He wasn’t Security personnel so he hadn’t thought much of the previous alert but this was different. He tapped a few more commands only to see that the Security Chief in the Medical bay. Why would he be there and not fighting intruders? On a hunch, he tapped his combadge =^=Baldur to Tenkiller, What exactly’s going on?= ^= He asked in a firm voice.

SOO - Baldur

A frustrated Oklahoma accent responded immediately.=^= Hell if I know. We have multiple hostiles on the Promenade, and the Skipper has me on some wild goose chase here in medical for something the Doc just told me about. Dollars to donors that’s what this is about, so I’m trying to find the damn thing. =^=

Tenkiller, CoS

Toveka frowned. If he was in medical, she had a feeling she knew what he was seeking. Her own comm activated and a slightly Romulan accented voice came to his ears. =^=Tenkiller, Sir. The Captain just came by here and said the same thing. That he wanted us to look for something they might be looking for. I say we compare notes and see what we come up with. Maybe we can find it quicker.=^=

She frowned at Balder. “What? I wasn’t gonna tell him we had it. Never know who’s listening… right?” She looked at the chip. “I think we need to get this and the brain matter into a couple containment fields and we need to work on that probe you were talking about.” She immediately went under the counter once more for a secondary container. Putting the chip in one, and the brain matter sample in the other, she placed them both in a secured travel case and set the case under the desk between two other identical cases. Standing back up, she looked at Balder. Her hand absently touching his arm. “We can’t tell the Security Chief we have it till we are sure he is alone and not under duress. Agreed?” She immediately took a step back and let go of him as she realized how inappropriate she had been. “Apologies, Sir…” she murmured.

Whilst the scientist had been explaining Baldur found the nearest weapon cabinet. He entered his code and grabbed one of the Type 2 Phasers and attached it to his waist, when he heard the sound of the transporter he quickly drew and aimed at the incoming target only to lower his weapon a moment later.

That Baldur had grabbed a weapon hadn’t surprised Toveka as much as the fact she ‘hadn’t’ considered grabbing one.

A swirl of lights indicated the arrival of… someone. Soon, the form of the station’s Security Chief coalesced into being and he looked around. “Ok. What the hell is going on, who just lied to me, and where is the item?”

Tenkiller, CoS

Toveka frowned and stepped around from the CIO beside her. “You know, for a security officer, you leave a lot to be desired in my eyes, Sir.” The final word given out of respect but an edge of irritation was evident. “What if the lab was compromised and you had just beamed in here and let it rip that the item was possibly here?” She took another step towards him, her hands clasped calmly in front of her. “And with alert claxons going off, and you in sick bay, did it ever occur to you my lie was because I didn’t know who was listening or around you, either?”

She stopped just in front of her. “I’m Toveka Brine, Chief Science Officer and I lied to let you know I knew of what you were speaking of but didn’t want others to know. If you would take a breath and calm down I’ll be happy to explain.” She looked at him as her speech, nearly Vulcan like in her lack of emotion, was skewed by the fact she was Romulan in features. Though lacking just enough of the edges of both human and Romulan features as to make one wonder just how mixed her gene pool was.

He glared briefly at her and said “Let me bring you both up yo speed. I’ve got dozens of civilians and station personnel getting shot at, maybe killed, and a Skipper trying to get me to that… whatever the hell it is. I don’t have time for games. I dont have time for discussion. Now where is it.” His voice was calm, his face the same. But there was an air of urgency that said he was done playing scavenger hunt while people’s lives were at risk.

Tenkiller, CoS

Toveka actually frowned slightly. “I understand that. Are you planning to give it to the people who are looking for it?” She looked at him and wondered why this moment had him so unsettled. She was no Betazoid, but even she knew that this situation was rubbing him in a way most others hadn’t. “If you are, I want to replicate a passable duplicate. We believe it is phase tech and I don’t want them using it to bring MORE trouble upon us.” She started to move towards the replicator.

Toveka

An idea occurred to him. “I wasnt planning on giving it to anyone. But give me that copy. I have an idea. And get that whatever you said it was into some kind of scan-proof container. No readings, got it? Not until we get our guests off the station.”

Tenkiller, CoS

The voice of the captain came over the comm. He was speaking more loudly than usual and there was phaser fire in the background. =/\= McGarrett to Tenkiller. Is the artifact from the Klingon’s brain secure? I’m sure they’ll want that one if they’re after the one here. =/\=

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

Toveka quickly tapped in the coding to replicate the chip in its static form. Bringing it to Tenkiller as the Captain popped up on the comm, she mouthed to Tenkiller, It is already and handed him the fake chip in silence.

She then backed up to stand close to the SOO, she leaned over and whispered to Balder, “Please… stay if the Captain doesn’t order you away.” She glanced up at him and her eyes held a hint of fear. It wasn’t a new concept to her. Merely a foreign and nearly forgotten one.

Toveka
CSO

=^= Secure and on the move, Captain. And I’ll be next to you in two minutes. Hold tight. =^= and he looked at Toveka and Balder. “Give me the real one. I’m gonna secure somewhere I know they cant get in.”

As this transpired Paige walked in “What in the name of Hades is going on?” She demanded hearing the comm call from the Captain. She looked at the three people in the room “I need to know what’s going on so I can protect my patients.” She demanded.

CMO

Tenkiller, CoS

Baldur looked at the Chief medical officer then back at the Security Chief. He was tired of angry yelling, insults and arguments “You can wait” He said pointing a large finger at the Medical Chief, he hated few things more than being impolite, especially to coworkers but there was no time for niceties now “Commander, you take the fake and let me take care of securing the object here. We have all the necessary equipment to store, replicate and hide it” He also pointed to the several workstations and various waist-high places “With a few well-placed forcefields and transport inhibitors this is a viable location for defense. Currently, there is no information on our computers that the device is here and even so you” he pointed to the fake “Just became our decoy” Baldur spoke quickly but with confidence and clarity “Trust me Commander” He took a step forward, placing a large hand on his shoulder “I’ll handle this, you kick those fools of our station”

SOO - Baldur

Paige started to say something else but bit her tongue. She had patients that she needed to worry about and this damn chip seemed to be the root of all the trouble.

Toveka stepped sideways so Tenkiller could see her. Her face was sincere and the attitude was gone. “I give you my word, Sir. We will secure it. Please… use that,” she nodded to the chip he had, “and go do what you had planned. Please. Save the others. We have this. My word to you.” She hoped he would understand. She would keep it secure, not work on it, or risk its discovery by taking it out of the case she now held against her chest with crossed arms over it.

Toveka
CSO

Tenkiller looked at all of the assembled members of the staff and said “Multiple hostiles. Armored. Capable of arriving on the station undetected until they were poof.. right there. And all of you think you can secure it in a lab better than in a Class V Armory vault. Well… I think y’all are either brave or stupid. So I ain’t taking a chance on either. You want it? Fine. Keep it. But that means you go in the Armory with it. So either cough it up so I can secure like the Captain said to, or go with it. Pick now. I ain’t waiting for a debate.”

Tenkiller, CoS

Before Baldur could argue, Toveka stepped forward. Her hackles were up once more. “FINE! Stop… both of you.” She looked from Baldur to Tenkiller. “We’ll take it to the Armory. Just go do what you need to do.” She took a deep breath. “The part we can’t. I’ll take it to the Armory right now. How’s that? And Baldur can take me.” She stepped up beside him and glared at Tenkiller. “That sufficient?”

Toveka
CSO

Tenkiller shook his head and said “Nope.” and tapped his comm badge. =/\= Tenkiller to Transporter. Site to site transport, CSO, SOO, myself to Armory. Energize priority one. =/\= and a voice responded =/\= Confirm. Transport in three… two… =/\=

Tenkiller, CoS

Baldur growled a deep sound of annoyance as they transported. he took a step forward and looked down at the Security Chief “You are a damned fool commander” His deep voice reverberating throughout the room “If you can’t trust your crewmates then you are less than qualified for this job” He instantly regretted his words, not the meaning but the fact that he allowed himself to say it “If I was on that team tracing this thing” He pointed at the canister with the real thing “I would trace where it was, from sickbay to the labs to here accessing the transporter logs, not a difficult thing mind you” Although he spoke with a firm tone he did not raise his voice “You had bait and no traceable way of knowing where it was in reality and now there’s a trace.” He shook his head “You gung ho types always jump the gun, just go deal with those intruders” He said walking away from the Security Chief.

SOO - Baldur

Toveka frowned. She didn’t exactly disagree with the SOO but delivery was something that could have waited till later. “Fine, we are here.” She handed him the case as she stepped into him. It wasn’t a completely friendly hand off. “And I can’t say I disagree. We aren’t a couple of Ensigns, SIR. You have wasted precious times and the lives of those you came to me to save. Do what you need. But don’t think that even I am all that amiable to how you did this.” She shook her head as her look softened, “Regardless of your intentions.”

She didn’t walk away because she wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of thinking her mad and resigned. She would stay till he left, or his temper got the best of him and he beamed them all back out again ‘just because he could’. One of these days, the two of them were going to butt heads on more serious matters. She wondered, then, just who would end up walking away.

Toveka
CSO

Tenkiller waited until they were finished and said “Y’all done? Good. Maybe now you’ll shut up for a sec and listen.” and he looked at Baldur. “While your lordship sure is right, you might want to consider the layout of the station and exactly where we are now. Security. One deck up from the labs, and…” and he walked over to a hatch in the floor and entered a code into the covered key pad, sliding the hatch open. “… one ladder down to the weapons locker which is on the same deck as your lab. You two get kitted up properly, then take that damn thing back to science and keep it from being detected. Anybody looks at the transporter, they’ll see we beamed here… but no record of you going back. Hunker down, and we’ll see about getting rid of our guests.” and he went to a terminal and keyed in a few commands. He then went to a rack and grabbed two Pulse Compression Phaser rifles and two Type II phasers. “There. Y’all have access to the locker. Don’t go too crazy shopping.” and he grinned and held up the fake chip. “I’ll see y’all later.” and he keyed his comms. =/\= Tenkiller to Transporter. Emergency point-to-point. Drop me right next to the Captain. =/\= and he slung the rifles over his shoulder and held two at the ready. He shimmered and was gone.

Tenkiller, CoS

Toveka frowned and watched him as he spoke and moved about the space. His explanation would have been much better if he’d just said it in the beginning Hey, we are going one deck up, you’re gonna get weapons, then crawl back down here and hide. As he faded from sight, Toveka smiled. “One of these days I’m gonna kick him, Baldur. I swear it. And the brig time would be worth it.” She glanced at him with an uncharacteristic look of disdain in her gaze for the Chief of Security.

She moved to the locker he had given them access to. “Long arm or pistol, Lieutenant Commander?” She asked, holding up a rifle and phaser with a sly grin on her face.

Toveka
CSO

Baldur grabbed a rifle, he’d allowed the Security Chief to have the last word, mostly because it was the polite thing to do. He had been harsh on the officer and understood he had the best of intentions in mind. “Don’t, he was simply doing what he thought was necessary” He said calmly examining the rifle; He turned it around a few times then opened it up to examine the power cell then quickly closed it again and primed it “The backward reasoning was sound if overly defensive” When the weapon was prepared he grabbed the chip case, handing it to the scientist “How advanced was your firearm training?” He asked as he nodded to the type 2 in her hand.

SOO - Baldur

Toveka did her own check and conditioning of her weapon and smiled. “I can’t pick off a tribble at a hundred kilometers, but I can defend my lab and not blow you up in the process. How’s that?” She smiled and set the checked phaser on her hip before handing him one as well and then locking the locker. Taking up the chip case, she nodded to the floor. “Shall we?” Patting his arm in reassurance she slung the rifle over her shoulder and deftly went back down into the Science lab after a quick check part way down to be sure it was still empty.

Toveka
CSO

Paige looked at Toveka and Baldur and finally just turned and walked out of the labs “Nevermind, I’ll figure it out on my own.” She said frustrated and walked away and headed back to Sickbay.

CMO

Baldur stretched slightly as he exited “By Thor’s beard” He exclaimed “Doctor Stone” He jogged to the door “Do you think now is not the time to throw a fit, we’re in the middle of an emergency” He called out to her “We’re under attack is that enough?”

SOO - Baldur

(fixed it to ‘not the time for a fit’… let me know if I was mistaken and you actually ‘wanted’ her to have a fit lol)

Toveka sighed as she saw the CMO upon descending. The woman had been out of line of sight of the ladder till the scientist had stepped away from the ladder and turned. As she departed, she was glad the SOO had gone after her. She could certainly sympathize with the woman being upset. Ten had beamed out all but her and left her here. She made a mental note to take the woman to lunch when this was over.

Moving to the area the other cases like the one in her hand were stowed, Toveka shifted it to the back and rearranged the small cupboard to look like nothing was amiss. The case was scan proof and with a temporary quarantine shield down, for their protection in a crisis of course, the chip would be totally undetectable. She then disposed of the other brain materials they had created. And lastly, she went thru and transferred all the test sims to three small chips. One she set under the edge of the desk where it wouldn’t be seen. The other two she took to her office. One went in a container in her desk with a couple dozen other discs. This one she marked with a small lightning bolt circled, and tossed it in with the rest, mixing it in with her fingers to disguise it. The other one, she tucked behind the edge of the digital board on her wall on the far side away from the door. It was so small, no one knew it was there.

Sitting back at her desk, she made a quick log entry that stated the chip hadn’t done anything and that security had come and confiscated it and took it with them back to the promenade. She made sure the feeling of anger and panic was in the short entry and keyed it to let her know if anyone did a search for her, Science, the chip, temporal anomalies, or brain. Satisfied, she went back in the other room to see how Baldur and the CMO were doing.
