He laughed around a mouthful of salad and said “Does shooting my mouth off and making the Skipper cringe count as a hobby?” and he smiled and swallowed. Wiping his mouth, he said “Naw, but seriously… I have a lot of obligations to my tribe. Before I left for the Academy, I was made a tribal elder. So even out here, I am part of my tribe’s efforts to support our people, help those that need it, and maintain our traditions. I use the holodeck a lot to practice some of our ceremonies… and to train. Osage have a particular form of hand to hand combat. I think I’m the only one in Star Fleet who knows it, so I try to keep my skills up. Its come in handy more than once, too.” and he chuckled and his eyes reflected memories were dancing in his mind.

Tenkiller

She laughed at the Captain comment, “It only counts if it’s consistent.”

When he spoke of his tribe, she didn’t have to be a Betazoid to sense the pride and loss of being their leader and being so far from them. “I’m sorry you can’t be closer to them. And I fear I am passing with a phaser, but lousy at hand to hand or I would offer to be a counterpart for you to practice with. If I or the Science Dept can ever be of service, please let me know.” She shrugged and took another forkful of her salad. “Though I can’t think of a single reason you would. But the offer stands, none the less.”

After finishing her bite she glanced back up. “Are any of the ceremonies something I could watch, sometime?” Quickly she added, “If not, it’s all right. Just a thought. Insatiable curiosity and all that.”

Toveka

He nodded enthusiastically. “Absolutely. You can watch any of them. I’d actually like that. Back at the Academy when I was teaching, I’d always like it when people came. I actually worked with Enginnering and their Cadets, and they built a comms interface with the Holodeck in the Command School. I could participate in real time with the folks back home. THAT was amazing. But the power demands that it used were so much, there’s no way to do it from a station or a ship.” and he took another bite. He chewed, swallowed, and took a drink. “What about you? What do you do for fun or to relax?”

Tenkiller, CoS

It took her a moment to answer. When she did, she tried to joke, but it wasn’t quite as upbeat as she had been a few moments before. “I don’t think I have anything worth mentioning, to be honest. I spend every moment I have either working on ship project or my own stuff.” She had to really give it some thought. “I enjoy desserts. Does that count?” She laughed and this time it was a bit more relaxed, if slightly more embaressed. “I enjoy trying desserts from different cultures and species. But sadly, that’s about it. Perhaps I should take up pestering the Captain.”

“Oh no. I ain’t having no one poach my reputation as prime antagonist. You may be pretty, but that ain’t enough to encroach on my territory, now.” and he laughed. “Besides, you keep pestering him like you did, and you’ll outrank me by the end of the shift!”

Tenkiller, CoS

She laughed as he defended his passionate ‘Captain poking’ hobby. “No worries there.” She responded to his jest of outranking him. “I’ll be honest. I thought I was getting a demotion. Seriously.” She looked down into her half full bowl. “I withheld information he had a right to know.” She looked up at him. “I’m sorry. You had a right to know as well. Soon as I got stopped from using the shuttle, I should have told you what was going on.” She smiled and reached to lightly touch his arm. “I won’t keep anything I find, this time, from you. You have my word. Even if it doesn’t make sense.” Realizing where her hand was, she pulled it back and took another bite of her dinner.

He looked at her and shook his head and smiled. “Look, I only need to know if it’s something you think I should know, ok? I’m not here to make your job harder. Hell, I prolly wouldn’t understand most of what ya do anyway. Now, I know there’s a ton a’ Security folks who think their job is to slap their d-… uh, weight on the table and see whose is bigger. I ain’t like that. I’m here to keep folks safe. Now, sometimes that means keeping them safe from others… an’ sometimes that’s keepin’ ‘em safe from themselves. Either way, I’m just here to keep them safe, and keep the peace. So you do you, and I’ll watch out for the rest. Sound good?”

Tenkiller, CoS

Toveka nodded. “Agreed. On one condition.” She gave him a sly grin. “I want a dessert from your past that’s as equally good, if not better, than the bread we had the other night. How’s that sound?” She laughed and finished her salad before picking up her dinner plate.

He raised his eyebrows and said “Well, I think that could be arranged. But I’d have a condition of my own, in that case.” and looked at her with a sly expression on his face.

Tenkiller, CoS

She paused a moment, raising a curious eyebrow and looked at him. “And what would that be?” There was the faintest of hints of a smile on the edges of her lips.

He looked directly at her and said “You let me take you out to dinner. Promenade. On a date. Candlelight, wine… the works.” and he cocked his head to the side and waited for her response.

Tenkiller, CoS

She wouldn’t have been more surprised if he had just slapped her. “A da..” she had to stop as her voice cracked in surprise. “A date? With me?” No one had asked her on a date since before the Academy. She wasn’t even sure what she was supposed to say. “Um… ok, I mean,” she smiled, “Yes… I’d like that.” She was off balance now, grateful to be sitting down and looked at him a long moment. She couldn’t help but ask what was on her mind. “Why?”

Tenkiller threw his head back and laughed out loud, the clapped his hands together and looked at her. “You’re serious? Really?” and he laughed again and then looked at her, shaking his head. “Well, let’s see.” and he reached over and began pouring the Romulan ale into the heavy glasses. “You’re smart as hell. You’re brave. You got strong opinions and aren’t afraid to stick up fer yerself. And all of that is wrapped up in a package that would make any man with eyeballs take a second… naw… third look behind him if he were ta walk past ya. And if I do say so myself…” and he handed her a glass, “You’re intriguing as all get out, and I want to get to know you better. A lot better. That good enough for ya? ‘Cause I’m pretty sure I can come up with a few more reasons off the cuff.” and he smiled and took a sip.

Tenkiller, CoS

“NO… don’t…” she balled her fist cause she had almost reached for him once more. “I mean, that’s plenty, of course.” She was blushing so hard she felt the heat on her cheeks and neck. “I just… honestly no one has ever asked me out. You haven’t been here long enough, but you know they call me the Romulan Vulcan, don’t you? My nose is always buried in something scientific. I mean,” she glanced around her room, “I can’t even tell you what hobbies I have. And my room looks like an extension of the science lab.” She looked at him shaking her head. A small laugh crawling up her throat. “I don’t understand. But I’d love to.” She took the bottle and topped her own glass off. Though perhaps a bit more full than usual.

He looked at her as her fist balled up, and when she finished talking he chuckled. “You know you can touch me if ya want. I ain’t gonna bite unless ya ask me.” and grinned as he took a drink. He was enjoying keeping her off balance, and the blush on her cheeks made her eyes sparkle… but he doubted she knew that.

Tenkiller, CoS

Toveka released her hand and spread her fingers wide to remove the cramp in her palm. “I know… I just…” She looked down. “I’m not very good at this and you are enjoying it, aren’t you?” She looked up. While the shine was still in her eyes, she was worried. “Tenkiller… I just wanted you to know, that’s all.” She took a deeper than necessary draw of the ale.

He smiled, but it was smile of kindness and patience. “No apologies needed. And I ain’t gonna lie… I am enjoying the hell outta this. You are always so put together, so in control. It’s nice to see you smile… and blush… and laugh. But especially blush.” and he laughed. “Tell ya what. I promise I wont tease you or press your buttons too much while we are out in the public eye, okay? But in private, you are fair game. Deal?” and he grinned.

Tenkiller, CoS

She laughed again and shook her head. “Something tells me that’s not a choice I truly have, is it? You’re going to be merciless in private, regardless.” She smiled at him and leaned on the back of the couch. “Just don’t claim a month from now I didn’t warn you. Showing me off in public is going to earn you a few choice insults and nicknames as well.” She thought for a moment. “So, your date. I’m guessing you will choose the place. I just need to know how you wish me to dress. I mean,” and she raised a teasing eyebrow. “We can make it professional and just wear our uniforms.”

Toveka
CSO

“Our date. Let’s dress up a bit, shall we? Not black tie, but dress and suit. I’ll even do my hair.” and he smiled. “And if anyone decides they want to give me nickname for spending time with you, so be it. But it better be clever, otherwise they are really gonna hate life.” and he laughed.

Tenkiller

Toveka blushed. “Our date… and I am sure I can come up with something suitable to wear. Though you may look silly in a dress.” She was still off balance and embarrassed. But she was managing to keep things pleasant. She was finding herself enjoying his company more than she had planned.

Toveka

“Lady, you ain’t seen my legs. I can pull off a little black number with a split up the side like nobody’s business.” and he laughed again. “And I’m sure whatever you pick will be beautiful. Pretty sure you could make a potato back look good.” and he smiled at her. “So we plan on when you get back from the debris field? Say… night after tomorrow? 1900? I’ll pick you up.”

Tenkiller, CoS

She laughed and nodded. “Careful, I may call you on that bet. And, I’m sorry to say, I don’t own a potato sack.” Though she seemed a bit confused by what it had to do with a dress. As he stated the time, she nodded. “As you wish. I will be ready. Speaking of the debris field… will you be joining us tomorrow?” She wasn’t sure why she was asking. And she wasn’t sure she even knew what answer she hoped he would give.

Tenkiller shook his. “No, I’ll be here. Still trying to get everything the way I think it needs ta be before I call it good. But I got ya a solid detail. And the pilot knows more than a bit about moving a star ship, so you’ll be in good hands.” He smiled broadly at her. “Speaking of… you, little lady, need to get some sleep. Big day tomorrow. And I may just be getting up early to see you off.” and he stood and said “I’ve had a great time. And I’m really looking forward to our date.”

Tenkiller, CoS

Setting her forgotten plate back on the coffee table, she stood up as well. “I am sure you will have things ‘all good’ in no time.” Smiling she nodded at his comment of seeing her off. “I’d like that. But don’t get up that early just for the sake of me.” That seemed a bit extreme.

As she walked him to the door, she smiled. “I’m looking forward to it as well. And thank you for tonight. Even if it was more of me rambling than anything. I get carried away sometimes.”
