He laughed around a mouthful of salad and said “Does shooting my mouth off and making the Skipper cringe count as a hobby?” and he smiled and swallowed. Wiping his mouth, he said “Naw, but seriously… I have a lot of obligations to my tribe. Before I left for the Academy, I was made a tribal elder. So even out here, I am part of my tribe’s efforts to support our people, help those that need it, and maintain our traditions. I use the holodeck a lot to practice some of our ceremonies… and to train. Osage have a particular form of hand to hand combat. I think I’m the only one in Star Fleet who knows it, so I try to keep my skills up. Its come in handy more than once, too.” and he chuckled and his eyes reflected memories were dancing in his mind.

She laughed at the Captain comment, “It only counts if it’s consistent.”

When he spoke of his tribe, she didn’t have to be a Betazoid to sense the pride and loss of being their leader and being so far from them. “I’m sorry you can’t be closer to them. And I fear I am passing with a phaser, but lousy at hand to hand or I would offer to be a counterpart for you to practice with. If I or the Science Dept can ever be of service, please let me know.” She shrugged and took another forkful of her salad. “Though I can’t think of a single reason you would. But the offer stands, none the less.”

After finishing her bite she glanced back up. “Are any of the ceremonies something I could watch, sometime?” Quickly she added, “If not, it’s all right. Just a thought. Insatiable curiosity and all that.”

He nodded enthusiastically. “Absolutely. You can watch any of them. I’d actually like that. Back at the Academy when I was teaching, I’d always like it when people came. I actually worked with Enginnering and their Cadets, and they built a comms interface with the Holodeck in the Command School. I could participate in real time with the folks back home. THAT was amazing. But the power demands that it used were so much, there’s no way to do it from a station or a ship.” and he took another bite. He chewed, swallowed, and took a drink. “What about you? What do you do for fun or to relax?”

It took her a moment to answer. When she did, she tried to joke, but it wasn’t quite as upbeat as she had been a few moments before. “I don’t think I have anything worth mentioning, to be honest. I spend every moment I have either working on ship project or my own stuff.” She had to really give it some thought. “I enjoy desserts. Does that count?” She laughed and this time it was a bit more relaxed, if slightly more embaressed. “I enjoy trying desserts from different cultures and species. But sadly, that’s about it. Perhaps I should take up pestering the Captain.”

“Oh no. I ain’t having no one poach my reputation as prime antagonist. You may be pretty, but that ain’t enough to encroach on my territory, now.” and he laughed. “Besides, you keep pestering him like you did, and you’ll outrank me by the end of the shift!”

She laughed as he defended his passionate ‘Captain poking’ hobby. “No worries there.” She responded to his jest of outranking him. “I’ll be honest. I thought I was getting a demotion. Seriously.” She looked down into her half full bowl. “I withheld information he had a right to know.” She looked up at him. “I’m sorry. You had a right to know as well. Soon as I got stopped from using the shuttle, I should have told you what was going on.” She smiled and reached to lightly touch his arm. “I won’t keep anything I find, this time, from you. You have my word. Even if it doesn’t make sense.” Realizing where her hand was, she pulled it back and took another bite of her dinner.

He looked at her and shook his head and smiled. “Look, I only need to know if it’s something you think I should know, ok? I’m not here to make your job harder. Hell, I prolly wouldn’t understand most of what ya do anyway. Now, I know there’s a ton a’ Security folks who think their job is to slap their d-… uh, weight on the table and see whose is bigger. I ain’t like that. I’m here to keep folks safe. Now, sometimes that means keeping them safe from others… an’ sometimes that’s keepin’ ‘em safe from themselves. Either way, I’m just here to keep them safe, and keep the peace. So you do you, and I’ll watch out for the rest. Sound good?”

Tenkiller, CoS

Toveka nodded. “Agreed. On one condition.” She gave him a sly grin. “I want a dessert from your past that’s as equally good, if not better, than the bread we had the other night. How’s that sound?” She laughed and finished her salad before picking up her dinner plate.

He raised his eyebrows and said “Well, I think that could be arranged. But I’d have a condition of my own, in that case.” and looked at her with a sly expression on his face.
