She wasn’t mad. That’s what infuriated her so much. Tenkiller had been doing his job when he told her she didn’t have permission to use the shuttle to go into the debris field. It was now an issue that she didn’t have proper clearance. Which meant only one thing… she had to get it.

Going back to her quarters, she tapped out a missive to the Captain seeking to speak to him about clearance into the field for collection of samples and data pertaining to its destruction. She then made herself a cup of tea and waited. She just hoped it came before her two days of off time were over. She’d already wasted half a day.

Chief Science Officer

A few minutes later she received a call over her combadge. =^= McGarrett to Brine. Lieutenant I’ve got half an hour between meetings if you want to discuss your request now. I’ve been meaning to speak to you anyhow. =^=

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

=^=On my way, Captain. Thank you.=^=

Less than five minutes later, she was tapping the chime on the Captain’s door, tugging her uniform front down to be sure it lay well.

“Come in, Lieutenant,” came the familiar voice of the captain in response.

The door opened, revealing the empty as typical reception room. A moment later the door to Captain McGarrett’s interior office opened, revealing the captain seated at his desk, looking at a PADD. “There’s two certainties in life. Death and performance evaluations,” he oddly said without looking up.

Toveka walked in and nodded. “Yes, Sir… invariably. Though I am sure there are other things. But at the moment I can’t think of any.” She took a moment then spoke. “I appreciate you seeing me so quickly about my request.”

Mathias finally set the PADD down and rose to his feet, making his above average height obvious. “Of course. I know it means a great deal to you. Why don’t you have a seat and tell me what you’re after?” he asked, motioning with his hand towards the end of his L-shaped office where there was a coffee table and two light gray chairs that matched a loveseat opposite them. On the wall was a painting depicting a scene of mostly destroyed Federation starships.

Toveka moved to the cluster, choosing one of the seats. “Thank you.” She sat down and took a breath. “As you recall, we use the debris field to get readings and samples to help further the investigation into how this happened, and see if we can prevent it happening again.” She was cautious not to make it seem anything untowards had occurred. She had the feeling it was more than a natural occurrence. “It seems the restrictions have changed since Duncan and I had been out and I need to get permission to go out once more and pass it to Security before my trip.”

They had a bit of something that could have been proof, before. She just had to find it again.

Mathias took a seat opposite Toveka. “Well, last time you came back without a shuttle, so that seems reasonable that there would be restrictions in place. So that seems like a sensible precaution to me. I’m not up on the latest scientific advances like you probably are, but last I checked shuttles did not grow on trees,” he quipped without a change in his facial expression.

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

She felt her breath hitch. Duncan had nearly died. Same with her, but it didn’t register back then. She took a deep breath. “I understand, Captain. But while I can give you all the best reassurances in the universe, I cannot guarantee we won’t be set upon. Pirates, looters and other species are out here investigating. But I believe it is in the Federation’s interest to be the first to make those discoveries, in partnership with the remaining Romulan Council. Don’t you?”

Mathias shook his head slightly. “Not if I end up with a dead officer in the process.” He paused for a moment before continuing. “Look, I hear what you are saying, but I think we need a review of the security risks of the mission and to figure out what we can do to minimize those risks. I don’t feel comfortable approving this until then. There’s inherent risk in every mission we go on in Starfleet. But it’s not like we have a weekly situation where we might die or get captured or have some other terrible crisis we have to overcome. We wouldn’t last long if that were the case.”

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

I hear what you’re saying… but…

Those words kicked her in the gut. She wasn’t going to get into the debris field today. Maybe tomorrow, if she was lucky.

“Is that something you want the Security Chief and I to come up with? Or would a debrief of my last mission, along with what we can do to avoid the loss of life and shuttle, be sufficient?” She was being serious. But hoped the Captain would choose the latter. She wasn’t even sure why she offered to bring it to Tenkiller’s attention. She took another breath and once more hoped the Captain would simply tell her to reassess what happened last time. It was a worse case scenario. Surely she could use that as a baseline.

Lt JG Toveka Brine

“Good ideas,” the captain said. “The debrief of the last mission isn’t necessary. I remember enough of what happened. But the rest of it sounds great.” Working with Commander Tenkiller was exactly what Mathias was going to suggest. It was always nice to see those under his command volunteer to do what he was about to order them to do.

Mathias quickly tapped his combadge. =^= McGarrett to Tenkiller. Report to my office, Commander. =^=

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

“But I…” As the Captain complimented her on her thinking, she sighed. It wasn’t what she had been suggesting. She had wanted the Captain to allow her to make her own assessment. But one didn’t just come out and say that.

“Yes, Sir…” She said and sat back as they waited on the Security Chief.

The response was immediate. =^= On my way, Captain. =^=

A little over five minutes passed and the chime rang on the door.

Tenkiller, CoS

Toveka’s head went to the door as the chime rang. Great her mind whispered This is going to be very interesting.

“Come in,” Mathias shouted, trying to get his voice to carry around the corner and through two doors.

The door opened, which revealed the captain’s vacant reception room with the long skinny table on the left side. Then a second door opened, revealing the portion of the office Tenkiller hadn’t seen before. Captain McGarrett’s unoccupied desk could now been seen.

When he entered the interior office, Tenkiller would see that the room was L-shaped, with a seating area to the right that McGarrett and Brine were seated at. A coffee table was in the center and there was an open chair next to the one Toveka was sitting in.

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

Tenkiller made his way in and nodded at Toveka before saying simply “Reporting as ordered, Captain. What’s happening?” while he stood behind the vacant chair.

Tenkiller, CoS

Toveka watched Tenkiller enter and nodded. She smiled but it didn’t quite reach her eyes this time. “Sir,” she nodded to him in acknowledgement and respect. Her legs moving to allow him access to the other seat.

Toveka
CSO

“Please have a seat, Commander,” Mathias said, motioning to the chair. “Miss Brine is proposing a scientific mission to explore the debris field of the remains of Romulus. She suggested working with you to assess the security risks of this mission and what can be done to minimize them.”

Captain Mathias McGarrett, CO

She inhaled a moment not sure if she should correct the Captain or not. She also wasn’t sure what Tenkiller would think of her making the suggestion. She turned and watched to see the Security Chief react.

Tenkiller sat and said “Lieutenant Brine suggested that, did she?” and glanced knowingly at her. “Well in that case, I’d be happy to help. Should we start with known issues, or jump feet first into the regs we are gonna have to keep on mind doing this particular survey?”

Tenkiller, CoS

“The known issues,” began Mathias. “The center of Romulan space doesn’t have the governmental oversight that it used to, which brings with it completely different dangers than a trip to Romulus would have used to, with Romulan factions and pirates. But Lieutenant Brine could speak to that better than I can as she encountered trouble the last time she took on this kind of mission.”
