She wasn’t mad. That’s what infuriated her so much. Tenkiller had been doing his job when he told her she didn’t have permission to use the shuttle to go into the debris field. It was now an issue that she didn’t have proper clearance. Which meant only one thing… she had to get it.
Going back to her quarters, she tapped out a missive to the Captain seeking to speak to him about clearance into the field for collection of samples and data pertaining to its destruction. She then made herself a cup of tea and waited. She just hoped it came before her two days of off time were over. She’d already wasted half a day.

Chief Science OfficerA few minutes later she received a call over her combadge. =^= McGarrett to Brine. Lieutenant I’ve got half an hour between meetings if you want to discuss your request now. I’ve been meaning to speak to you anyhow. =^=

=^=On my way, Captain. Thank you.=^=
Less than five minutes later, she was tapping the chime on the Captain’s door, tugging her uniform front down to be sure it lay well.
Toveka
CSO“Come in, Lieutenant,” came the familiar voice of the captain in response.
The door opened, revealing the empty as typical reception room. A moment later the door to Captain McGarrett’s interior office opened, revealing the captain seated at his desk, looking at a PADD. “There’s two certainties in life. Death and performance evaluations,” he oddly said without looking up.

Toveka walked in and nodded. “Yes, Sir… invariably. Though I am sure there are other things. But at the moment I can’t think of any.” She took a moment then spoke. “I appreciate you seeing me so quickly about my request.”
Toveka
CSOMathias finally set the PADD down and rose to his feet, making his above average height obvious. “Of course. I know it means a great deal to you. Why don’t you have a seat and tell me what you’re after?” he asked, motioning with his hand towards the end of his L-shaped office where there was a coffee table and two light gray chairs that matched a loveseat opposite them. On the wall was a painting depicting a scene of mostly destroyed Federation starships.

Toveka moved to the cluster, choosing one of the seats. “Thank you.” She sat down and took a breath. “As you recall, we use the debris field to get readings and samples to help further the investigation into how this happened, and see if we can prevent it happening again.” She was cautious not to make it seem anything untowards had occurred. She had the feeling it was more than a natural occurrence. “It seems the restrictions have changed since Duncan and I had been out and I need to get permission to go out once more and pass it to Security before my trip.”
They had a bit of something that could have been proof, before. She just had to find it again.
Toveka
CSOMathias took a seat opposite Toveka. “Well, last time you came back without a shuttle, so that seems reasonable that there would be restrictions in place. So that seems like a sensible precaution to me. I’m not up on the latest scientific advances like you probably are, but last I checked shuttles did not grow on trees,” he quipped without a change in his facial expression.

She felt her breath hitch. Duncan had nearly died. Same with her, but it didn’t register back then. She took a deep breath. “I understand, Captain. But while I can give you all the best reassurances in the universe, I cannot guarantee we won’t be set upon. Pirates, looters and other species are out here investigating. But I believe it is in the Federation’s interest to be the first to make those discoveries, in partnership with the remaining Romulan Council. Don’t you?”

Mathias shook his head slightly. “Not if I end up with a dead officer in the process.” He paused for a moment before continuing. “Look, I hear what you are saying, but I think we need a review of the security risks of the mission and to figure out what we can do to minimize those risks. I don’t feel comfortable approving this until then. There’s inherent risk in every mission we go on in Starfleet. But it’s not like we have a weekly situation where we might die or get captured or have some other terrible crisis we have to overcome. We wouldn’t last long if that were the case.”
